Was there a trick to getting the evap box clamps on when reinstalling?
@albumartist3 ай бұрын
From what I remember, I put the clamp on the condenser box (the end closest to the center console), and then maneuvered it into place. It took some wiggling to finally get it into place and connected with the vent pipe. After connecting, tighten the clamp. Part of the wriggling process was to get the hoses through the firewall. The other side of the box is easier due to more room. I hope that helps.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I have a weird metal “wire” sticking out from outside the black box (where the two green wires plug into the outer shell of the box” and it runs inside and is just shoved in between the fins of the evaporator. Is mine in a weird spot or is that where it should be?

wish I could remember how it was put on to the regulator. If you don't see any threads like a bolt, I think the roller is held in place with a pin that is pressed through the roller into the metal. sorry.

@@albumartist there don’t seem to be threads and also I think there was a clip on the end of the cable sheathing that broke off too. I ended up ordering a set of two on eBay. Thanks for the video though. Very informative.

Around 1:26 mark I change the camera angle. The camera is on the floor pointed up toward the pedal and switch. There is a small metal flange behind the clutch pedal where the blue plastic piece is supposed to be. If broken, there will only be a hole where the piece attaches to the flange. This is where I use the dime and tape to cover the hole.

@sailincat28223 жыл бұрын
My 1999 Miata with tan interior had exactly the same problem with the passenger side window stopping a couple inches down. Found exactly the same cause; plastic cable positioning clip popped loose, allowing cable to snag the window on its way down. I fixed mine by drilling two small holes either side of the cable close to the loose clip. I threaded stainless steel safety wire in one hole, around the cable out the other hole, then twisted the ends together using pliers. I like the zip-tie idea mentioned in other comments. However, mine was repaired, working, and back together before I scrolled down to read them. albumartist is absolutely right about that black sticky goo getting everywhere! I strongly advise wearing disposable gloves and clothes you don't mind getting stains on. Pay attention to which parts have to go back on before the plastic vapor barrier, because you don't want to deal with that goo more than once! About the same time as the problem covered in this video, my other power window suddenly quit altogether. Quickly isolated the problem to the a tiny broken bit of plastic in the window control switch in the center console. That too was an easy fix. I replaced the switch assembly with a *brand new one* found on eBay. I don't recommend getting a used switch assembly, because the plastic would be just as old and weak is the failed one. So, a big thank you to albumartist!

Do you need a new drier to convert or can you keep the stock drier and run r134a through it
@oceanside21523 жыл бұрын
I'm told I just need a clutch (it's a little noisy) Is it possible to just replace the clutch while the R12 system stays intact? my 91 NA is supercharged with very cold original air. 94k miles
@markc47683 жыл бұрын
you can indeed replace the clutch on the NA without compromising the system. However, the most common cause for clutch failure is too little or too much charge causing the compressor itself to become loaded and overheated. Another issue is that early Miatas that are still running r-12 should be using PAG 150 and those converted to r134A are usually done via the quick and dirty method (either the r-12 has leaked out or was drained to the atmosphere. This doesn't get the old oil out of the system and the addition of 134 simply creates a system that will eventually kill either the compressor or the clutch. Thus, if your R12 system was professionally serviced or professionally converted to 134a, replacing a clutch that is chattering or making a whiney noise will probably put you back in business. However, if it was shadetree'd without a good evac and the correct oil (mineral for R-12 and PAG46 or 100 in very hot climates for 134A) I would recommend taking it to a body shop that's in a slow cycle.... they are far better priced that most dealer/mech shops, and usually have more experience with AC problems.... I dealt with exotic and collector car shops for 20 years and had them do all of my AC service ( vacuum recovery, replacment O-Rings, system drawdown and integrity test, then add oil and recharge system. Save at least 30% or more over a dealer service.

No joy for me :-( I was afraid to try to pry out the switch, and being an automatic with overdrive, the console removal looked more complicated than it is for a manual. So, I took it to my mechanic. To add insult to injury, the Check Engine light came on on the way to the garage. A needed emission repair. Anyway, he called me to tell me he had the switch out if I wanted to try to clean it. I got the switch, which looked different than what is shown here (this is a '99 Miata). I got the switch apart but there were no exposed contacts. Each lever moved a separate small sealed slider switch. I gave him to go ahead to order a new switch. This is going to be $$$$$$$$$$$$$! :-(

Can you switch a glass window to that top? A top that used to have a plastic one?
@albumartist3 жыл бұрын
If you mean to keep the rear flap of the plastic window and insert glass from a later Miata (1999-2005) to take its place, no. The rear window is smaller on the glass windows. From what I remember, the rear flap of the 99-05 top is attached to the rest of the top, so it can't be transplanted that way either. I suppose you could get a custom piece of glass to fill the space left by the plastic, and glue it, but at that point, you'd be halfway to the cost of a new top with glass anyway. I'd recommend getting on miata dot net. Get into the for sale section and check if they have any tops for sale. People who convert the cars for spec racing get rid of the tops for cheap.

I didn't get to test for more than a couple of months before I found a new top. In a low rain climate, I think it will last 6 months easily. At least long enough to save up for a replacement.

Thank you for this video. I know it’s old, but it told me two things. This is a common problem on these cars and that I could fix it. My problem was exactly like yours. Wire was binding the window. A push of the bracket back in the door and a little duct tape and it’s working again. I wish you would have shown putting that plastic with the goop back on. I did my best but it was messy. I also had to drill out the door handle screw. It was completely stripped. Although my bushing like yours is in bad shape, the window worked fine without it. I did not want to also remove the glass. I guess that is a project for another day. I’m just glad to have a working window again.

This is among the best Miata tutorials on Utube. Thanks for all the effort you put in it! I just shared it with a neighbor who is replacing his evaporator after I used your vid a month ago - AC on my NA worked great but drain plug had gotten blocked and would not stay clear (had to drill hole in floor as stop-gap to keep it from flooding...) I replaced the 30 year old expansion valve as a preventative. While I was in there, I diluted 4 oz of commercial Koil-Klean with an ounce of water and sprayed the coils (they were black and slimy) Scrubbed the crud out with a coil brush, then sprayed and dry-wiped everything inside and out that I could reach using Rectorseal . Once the box was re-assembled, I wrapped all the outside panels with Home Depot adhesive backed silver duct insulation and covered the low side lines in the engine compartment with rubberized pipe insulating tape. AC is at a steady 36*F on the center vent fridge thermometer today when OAT today is 90*.. (Part of what makes it so comfortable inside is that I covered the firewall, interior, door skins and trunk in generic dynamat; headers were jetcoated and I mirrror polished stainless steel to replace all the heat shields. Interior stays fairly cool even without AC - total cost for all the NVA mods was right at $300 including a new drier and a local body shop doing the AC draw-down and recharge on a slow day ($48 an hr x 1.8 and I provided freon, oil and a case of beer.... vs $125+ at a repair shop).

What were the symptoms that prompted this repair? My miata AC is not blowing cold. It is charged and compressor+fan working, AC lines under the hood are cold, however every 5 seconds the flow of refrigerant changes (becomes lighter in color when looking through the sight glass). I am assuming this thermal expansion valve is sticking causing the refrigerant to not make it all the way up to where it needs to go?
@albumartist4 жыл бұрын
Its been a while since I looked at these videos. The car had been siting for five years and when I had a shop check the AC, I believe they mentioned the condenser and expansion valve were shot. Since I was moving to R134, I had to replace all the o-rings, and in the process, I did the valve.
