I’d push back on Foucault a little bit, psychoanalysis as per Freud is an open interpretative frame and analysis requires multiple interpretations. I think Foucault is being too monistic in his analysis.

“This precisely is the misunderstanding” oh boy was I wrong 😅. The metaphor of excavation by the way, according to my Foucaultian professor, is problematic precisely because it relies on the metaphor of discovery. Why don’t we instead use the metaphor of remembering the past with reference to history? Or maybe even something beyond memory (because it quickly turns into memorializing and stratification of knowledge, which is where inquiry ends). Historical inquiry conceived of as historical discovery or even rediscovery relies on implicit assumptions about the nature of the scientist/historian as a heroic figure

It seems as if the notion of discourse for Foucault, finally in the last instance means a power-knowledge matrix. Or rather, a set of rules for expressing what is conceived of as “knowledge”, as well as the “body of knowledge” in itself. But this begs the question of the scope of the concept of discourse

The continental philosophers of the late twentieth century were all personally entrenched, in quasi-Christian values. In a children-like worldview. They saw life in societies simplistically, as a battle between good and evil political systems. When there is no society on the planet, or in the history of humankind... that wasn't a despotic system. Run exclusively by monarchs or oligarchs. The only difference... whether the society is run, by the proverbial carrot or the stick. Western society is kept in check by its oligarchs through personal greed. The most sophisticated despotic system yet imagined. Where the ideal of individualism is used to justify huge gaps in wealth inequality. It is deeply despotic... but because the system is enforced by your own greed, everyone forever running around after their oligarchs whims... it is accepted as 'good'. The current political and fiscal system in the West is not a final destination... it is a grubby location, on an abandoned side road. Don't let people fool you into believing, this is as good as it gets.

The thing is that it would never have happened if Communism had actually won, but they failed. It was embarrassingly defeated by neoliberalism and allowed to feast on its corpse, summoning symbols of change and progress while keeping things the same which only accelerated decay and allowed Fascism to re-emege from its grave Leftism will refuse to take accountability for its own failures but in truth, they are at fault for the resurgence of right wing extremism as much as Neoliberalism is
