I xouldnt imagine for the life of me living this kind of lifestyle regardless of the times. I see aan enormous amount of money the likes many never see just to keep this place never mind the upkeep, staff etc. All that money going into a ahouse like this is rediculous & only meant for the highly rich 7 affluent. I live in a astudio aoartment & am very content with it even though its a bit smaller then I like, it costs me NOTHING to keep & manaage & its my own provate space to come to after the day is over & my money is saved for other things. As Granduous as these houses where, they where NOT meant for average folks. The redeeming qualities this era had was the forttitude behind building such monolithic residences regardless of cost, then the exquisite artistry & craftsmanship that wentinto its construction then the finest furnishings & decorations you can find at the time to make them palaces. Downton Abbey reminds me vaguely of the past that I was exposed to aas a child z& i remember visiting some houses like this & to this day I still ant imaagine living such a lifestyl, its totally alien to todays generaation. However the times back then where so different as well, women becoming persons under the law which flabergasted me when I watched a video on womens rights way WAY back as to how anyone can cast a womaan aas property & not a person is way beyond my comprehension. So Glad times have changed. Women back then where nothing more then birthing factories & servants to man & that really disgusted me to know this. Downton Aabby waas a great & timeless production into the past. They even added the sinking of titanic which made the series & the historical nature of Titanic, BOTH gave aa very detailed picture of how the times where. I was impressed with this series.

I purchased the full DVD set during the pandemic but have yet to watch it. I don't want to race through it but give it the time and attention it deserves. KZbin continues to pique my interest and I look forward to the day I can start the series from the beginning.

After WWI there were people in Britain known as "Surplus Women". Because of all the men who died in the war these women will never have husbands or remain as widows. This is when woman of a certain class entered the work force. Woman worked in businesses and shops. Traditional jobs men had done. Middle Class to Upper Class woman went to University in great numbers.

Yes, my great aunt, b1899, was one of these. Her father made her take office work after WW1 and she worked there for about 50 years as a single lady.

I couldn't really pick a. favorite out of the three sisters from DA. I liked all three for different reasons. Sybill was the rebellious one, forward thinking , and not afraid to be spontaneous. Edith was more introverted, sensitive , and always tried to look for the best in other people. Mary as the oldest daughter of the three I think had to be a sort of example to her younger sisters. Mary had a chip on her shoulder because she realized early on that women were considered subservient to men. I think that she sensed that her father wanted a son and because Lord Grantham only had daughters Mary felt that she was cheated out of life in some ways because she was born female. She wanted to accomplish more in life than just getting married, providing heirs, and hosting parties.

My favorite scene regarding Mary and Mr. Pamuk is when she decides to tell Matthew the truth about what happened with Mr. Pamuk " when ma,ma dies they'll find the incident embedded on her heart" bc I think we can all relate to times we've disappointed our parents. But the most upsetting scene is when O'Brian broke a bar of soap in half and placed it under Cora's bathtub..... need I say more.

There was a man who lived in one of these big houses, which is now owned by the National Trust. He bought lots of hand' crafted artifacts (?) from the houses that were selling up. His collection eventually filled the whole house and he lived in what was little more than a stone' built shed. ...Snowshill Manor is the name of the place.

The most wonderful thing about Downton Abbey is to see the love of a family played out. And in this case a ruling class family that can do so much for others and their society. Downton Abbey is a whole economic unit or society within itself supporting and sustaining all within it. This series would make excellent educational material for subjects such as History, English, Domestic Science and Religion and at a Tertiary level Economics, Sociology, Psychology and Religion.

For some a "broken heart" is fatal. The famous actress Debbie Reynolds died the day after her daughter Carrie Fisher passed away. She couldn't live with the loss. There's a legitimate medical term for this but I don't know the name or how to say it or spell it.

Ihave no idea what Downton Abbey is about as I live in Asia but I listen very careully to how these English people speak. I’m not Asian but Canadian with British ancestors. But I teach pronunciation and British pronunciation gives clues as to why words are spelled a certain way. An example is in cough and enough the “gh” has an “ F” sound because the vowel sound is short. But in though or through or dough the vowel sound is long so “gh” is silent. This would b the same in “-ight” words like: light, might, night, sight, tight and include words like neighbour and weigh. So how do you explain why “ gh” is silent in “ thought” or “ drought”? I will leave that for you to figure out. As well remember how the British pronounce : draught or plough. The “ gh” hss an F sound in “ draught” but silent in “ plough. They are all following a single rule. This is only more apparent in British pronunciation but also in some cases in the Southern drawl in southern states in America as it is closer to 18th Century British pronunciation. Don’t worry. British people may follow the rule more closely than Americsns but they don’t know it either. Good luck.
