i'm not devving games but i doubt it's a good idea to change the whole genre of a game just because you wanna finish it quickly. if you can just change the whole genre without affecting the game mechanics that identified the game, was it even a good idea in the first place?
@kristoffred23 күн бұрын
This is mostly advice for starting new games after inevitably project hopping because of overscoping. Changing the genre of your game isn't always possible, nor something I would recommend. The thing is, with game dev the initial project idea matters the most in finishing and not the actual time you spend on that project. If you pick an idea that's just not realistic to complete, it doesn't matter how much time you put into it, you will end up leaving that project if you're not ready to work on something that big.

Having a good schedule is really important too. I have many projects that are simple to do but I never finish them since I don't allow time for gamedev in my week

You can use Laigter to generate normal maps, though the results often need tweaking
@kristoffredАй бұрын
Yeah, but generally I need more control over how it looks like, so making them manually makes the most sense for me.
@yollie-the-dudeАй бұрын
Normal maps? Yeah, most maps aren't that strange
@NathanTheCraziestАй бұрын
Man I want to get into dynamic lighting as well, this has some pretty helpful insight. Pretty sure there's way to just generate normal maps from a texture but yeah it is pretty good to manually make them too.
@kristoffredАй бұрын
There is a software called "Materialize". I tried it out, but it doesn't generate great results for 2D sprites. It's pretty useful for larger, seamless textures tho.
@Kio_KurashiАй бұрын
Now we just need someone to make a tool in godot that will allow someone to take a sprite, set regions/layers on it, mark a direction that the region is facing (via a radial selector, naturally) and an intensity slider so people can set just how 'steep' of shift it is. Then crunch it out into a normal map texture. Probably would be great if it had a preview window with a lightsource that you could move around to test it. I'd make this but I still don't even know how to utilize tool scripts properly, let alone make a functional editor.
@kristoffredАй бұрын
That would be incredible, but probably hard to make. It's not too difficult to draw them in Photoshop, so I'm not sure if it would actually save time. The preview part could be nice, but after some practice you get a feeling on how the steepness affects the lighting.

Oh you're gonna love Laigter

One thing I actually used in the Brackeys 2024.1 Jam for normal maps is a free piece of software called Laigter. It’s lightning fast and can generate normal maps that can then be tweaked after the fact. It even has a preview light to show how they will behave!
