I remember my dad the day before after putting up the shutters watching the coverage on TV just kind of stop and get this sort of odd look on his face. He said "we better evacuate" and we ended up going to relatives up in Sebring,FL. We came back to our house just totally gone. Nothing but minimal debris left really. The rest of it was just blown away.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about house. Thankfully you guys were wise enough to head out. I still remember it as well, it left a permanent mark in my mind.

Hurricane Andrew was rated an all time disaster. Quote "looks like a bomb went off" It true I was in jacksonville, Fl taking repair/611 calls from thousands who lost their home. So many years were shed that day. My parents lived behind dadeland mall. It was going to hit Cutler ridge, liberty city direct hit. Rip to all. hopefully, never again.

That tree crusher breaks my heart, all those amazing old cypress trees that were probably 500 years old. Glad they stopped the canal.

I heard from an anonymous member of the Air Force that their Hurricane-Proof military grade sensors clocked a gust of 274, and that information was deemed classified so as not to create panic in the media, the reason the national media took so long to realise the severity of the disaster was lack of reports, but even if the civilian population was lacking communication the military and govertment knew and had the means transmit information which was withheld. Such is standard protocol.

It was at the Buckman Lock south of Palatka. It is the only lock still in use. It is the link between the St. Johns River and Rodman Reservoir. Since I can't post the link look up the Cross Florida Greenway and look for the Buckman Lock gate times. Best, Darren
