I borrowed this from a family friend and I can’t definitively say I gave it back.

I think the BBC had raided its Match of the Day archives to compile this video - originally on the old-style VHS format from the 1980s. I remember buying a copy in about 1990 and watching it avidly with my mates about this time. Some of the goals probably not 'great' by any standards - but many show classic English football - and players - at their very best in the pre-Sky and Premier League era. What a great player Bryan 'Pop' Robson was for both Newcastle United and West Ham in the early 1970s ! How he scored the goal for West Ham against Derby County - the one which went in off the crossbar - remains a mystery to me to this day. A truly great, under-rated striker from this era.

A cab driver in London collected George Best one evening. Bestie apologised saying “I’m a bit unsteady on my feet tonight”, the cabbie quick as a flash replied “that didn’t happen too often George”… What a superb great player he was..

Football as it was. As is should be now, at least on the pitch. We're glad for safer stadiums and no hooligans, but hard men on hard pitches with legendary commentators, among them the very best, Barry Davies.

Definitely one if not one of the greatest 1 day innings of all time. It still is way better then current day cricket. Also that last wicket partnership has still not been broken after nearly 40 years . What a master-class🙈🙉🙊

Ronnie Radford's goal is arguably the greatest goal ever.....I have left specific comments on that on the Hereford v Newcastle video so won't repeat them here. I am a Scottish guy and a lot of Scots like to point to Archie Gemmill's goal v Holland in 1978 (which was a great goal) as his best. Archie Gemmill's best goal is right here though, goal of the season. He intercepts the ball about 30 yards from his own goal, btw megs the Arsenal player, passes to Withe, the run he does to get into the Arsenal box is unbelievable and he still has the composure to finish like he does.....awesome.

What stands out for me even now, nearly 40 years on, is Viv Richards' stillness and poise whilst the bowlers approach the crease. That, his balance and superb reflexes were the hallmarks of his greatness.

Always wondered why that Jimmy Greaves goal near the beginning made the cut of “great goals”. Now having seen it again I’m even more baffled - it was a tap-in from point blank range and the throw-in from which the goal came was a foul throw as the Spurs player’s foot was across the touch line when he took it. Some classic strikes in here though - Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson was a seriously underrated player.
@mcfcguvnors2 жыл бұрын
was also a foul throw by Kinnear
@BenNewton-c6z Жыл бұрын
I had the original VHS of this too. The goals selected probably reflected great British goalscorers at the beginning ie Charlton, Best, Law et al and the inclusion of the Jimmy Greaves goal reflected that from 1969 onwards when the Beeb was showing games in colour.
