Now compare Graf's reaction after this match and her reaction after AO 1999 when Monica beat her. And then compare Monica's reactions after both the matches.

They keep on harping on 1988, as if 1989 wasn't a good year at all for Steffi!!! She lost RG to Sanchez Vicario, but won the other three and actually had an almost perfect win-loss record for the year (2nd only to Navratilova). In two years time, Steffi won 7 of 8 grand slams

Comments are unfair. You cannot compare women's tennis from 50 years ago to modern tennis. The equipment and training are completely different. Very few women even participated in sports back then. Watch a figure skating performance from 1971 and compare it to what the ladies do now. Sports evolve. Placement and accuracy were much more important. Evert made very few unforced errors and the ladies today scream their heads off and hit the ball 3 feet out at least once per game.

Laura Arraya Gildemeister was a very good player, but ahead of her time. Her slash and bash style of play would’ve served her better had she come along 10 years later.

Steffi Is So Beatiful in her Focus and Impeccable Footwork and Raw Athletic Instint and Purpose almost unwavering for the short fifteen years she played for us, and she is striking with that unprecedented mobility and grace deliciously combined with beyond formidable relentless power and that raspberry skirt.....Thank You, Jesus for This amazingly gifted talented Champion and the Quinticential Woman she became, such joi de vivre in which she's all aglow she deserves to be, and, with her cherished family's support I'm delighted to attempt to express the defining magnitude she's meant to me since i first ever saw her; now just look.....Stefanie Maria Graf, The Charitable, Humanitarian Woman she was created to be; as a devotedly loving wife to Agassi she reveals her God-given great nature through that wonderful relationship she idolizes in her two Beautiful All Grown up now Children......i wish i could meet Steffi and her husband, my favorite people, at least Steffi is all that for sure and a raspberry skirt!!! raspberry

Sabatini was over hyped by the media . Gaby serve extremely weak and attackable. Mary Joe is decent player but lacked a big weapon. Look at her record a tight head to head against Mary Joe Fernandez. The other top ladies Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Navratilova smashed Mary Joe. Sabatini always fell apart in the semifinal round and her decline started here.

My 2 favourite players of all time! I was one of the rare tennis fans who loved both Graf and Seles! And my 3rd favourite was Hingis who went on to meet Steffi in the final - one of the most exciting finals ever for controversial reasons! The 1999 Roland Garros was one of the best RGs in my memory for the women - so many legends playing that year. The WTA is now a shadow of what it once was.

This was such a monumental shock at the time. Pretty much everyone had written Gaby off - she'd had a poor 1990 having to be taken off court at the Australian Open in a wheelchair after sustaining a bad injury, followed by a sad loss to Novotna at the French Open. She'd played better at Wimbledon, reaching the semi finals, but didn't really seem to believe she could beat Navratilova. She'd only played two tournaments between Wimbledon and the US Open, losing to Rehe in Los Angeles and Katarina Maleeva in Canada. She had absolutely no form coming in to the US Open. But the draw opened up for her. Navratilova and Seles went out early in shock losses and Gaby battled her way through.

It's all in the past now , but Mac should have worked to improve his back court game both sides - like all the other top players of the day Seems he relied too heavily on his talent and great net game too much😮- when players like Becker could do both equally well

@tennisace40 ok yes - pretty even ; becker has 7 I believe, and Mac 8. A difference is that Becker played and won his slams across two decades of both 80 s & 90 s - the latter was a very strong era ; but Mac only won his during the first half of the 80 s

one thing i can see with Newcombe - who was a top player and title winner for several years, is that he is hitting his strokes deep. sure, the strokes look laughable today ... Newcombe was a serve-and-vollyer.

If you play like Edberg, you can forget about making the FO final these days. I think the culprit is the ball was redesigned to be heavier and probably more dragged through the air. If the court is the same, the only way to slow the game down is to make the ball travel slower.

We pulled for Steffi every time she walked on the court. My German heritage and her constant court composure and respect of other players sort of made that a lot more easier to do. I loved Seles too but the grunting turned me off at times especially against the journeyman players in earlier rounds. Not very professional. But Seles came from poverty in Serbia. And her father found a way during Communism and hard economic times to finance her play as a cartoonist. She literally grew up playing on dirt, not clay actual dirt. She was that poor. So much hunger and fight. And I would pull for them far more than the Williams sisters or anyone who acts entitled and aggressive whether they're American or not. Heidi looked attractive and quite stunning without a cigarette in her hand.

The extremely talented Frenchman played a fine game, but Sampras was at the top of his game that day. A beautiful all-court battle. A lot of great baseline points by the way.
