Very inspired tennis from Arantxa. While she only played like that a handful of times in her career (e.g. 1989 French Open, 1994 U.S Open, 1995 Wimbledon, 1996 French Open, and 1998 French Open), it shows how great she could be. While she wasn't quite on the level of Graf and Seles, she showed that she could be a real beast on the court when she was really on.

It was great to see this historic match again. Seems typical that the American commentators kept omitting Aranxta's mother's name, calling her "Aranxta Sánchez", but at the end the Spanish commentators correctly called her "Aranxta Sánchez Vicario". It is very unfortunate that Aranxta has had continuing financial problems in life, after her wonderful years of championship play.

That's was Steffi's only matches loss in grand slam from 1988 A.O to 1990 A.O, that's insane. The most dominant period for any player male or female in the open era. Just imagine had Steffi won that match, then she would have back to back calendar slam which may never broken.

Very far-fetched assumption. In that case, Hingis would have won Calendar Year Grand Slam had she won FO 1997 vs Majoli.

@@nambelas but Steffi already have won that golden slam in 1988 & many have predicted that Steffi will win another calendar slam but nobody expects Hingis to win 3 slam s in 1997. That's the difference. BTW Majoli beat Hingis in 1997 F.O final not 1999.

Another what-if....what if Seles had beaten Graf and faced Sanchez in the finals? Unlike Graf, Seles would have taken a lot of those looping shots on the rise.

@@nambelas FYI Steffi was lot closer to win 1989 F.O than Hingis in 1997. Majoli totally blow out Hingis in that final.

Sanchez probably played her most aggressive game against graff here. Later in grand slam finals she got hesitant and passive when she had chance tonwin.

Steffi said after this match that she was a little relieved to have lost. The pressure of doing two consecutive grand slams would have been way too much.

Graf was unwell. But Arantxa won anyway. Arantxa is stronger than Graf on clay, except for Seles.

Graf was ill this match. If you check she was running off to be sick all the time. But sanchez did play well but if Graf was fit she would have served it out at 5 3

​@@malimbep4298it's just a historical fact, not an excuse. All players go through bad events. Steffi had food poisoning, but she also said that she was suffering from menstrual cramps. Oddly enough, she seems to have been the beneficiary of Martina Hingis having menstrual problems during the 1999 final. So it all evens out over time.
