A cool thing you can do with iRealPro is transpose to minor and use the 7/8 Tango style. Cheers, Jack

Only thing I would add is a set of Hammond Organ pedals under the piano.

Hey Howard, do you know about the Frank Paparelli books? Cuz you just demonstrated three of them in 3 minutes. Great piano library from Dixieland to Bebop. You remind me of Phil Woods sitting at the piano with his Sax, playing a chord then Improvising over it. Great demonstration!

Howard, how Important is your knowledge of the Piano to your Harmonica Playing? How did you learn the piano? I'm finding that all the Brick Walls and Dead ends I've encountered in my attempt to learn these things on the Violin was due to a lack of knowledge of the Keyboard but trying to remedy that has led to more Brick Walls and Dead Ends. I've been reading "Swing to Bop" by Ira Gitler, and one of the things that struck me to the core was a remark by Howard McGee about one night, the piano player passing out and him and Charlie Parker having to take turns playing the changes on the Piano! The only mention I've read of Charlie Parker playing piano. Cheers, Jack

As a fiddle player I've been trying to find out all these thing for years, and I've bought Harmonica books. I really appreciate you dealing with Dorian Mode, and If you could help me out with Aeolian Mode and Harmonic minor that would be huge! To me this is "Real World" Music Theory, that would totally bog the mind of a Walter Piston. It is sort of a "Slide Rule" Theory of Music where you get the right answer without having to do all the Math. I can play most of this stuff on my fiddle, but if I actually knew the keys I was "Cross fiddling" to it would be so much easier to find the positions. Thanks, Jack

Watching your videos makes me feel like the teenager stuck at the kids table while single uncle Jerry is cracking some amazing dirty jokes just out of earshot. Mom is furious & dad is shrugging, trying to keep a straight face while laughing his ass off inside. It just ain't right.

I play on my hikes. just doing simple cross harp stuff, the act of walking puts you in a new space it feels. I turn it into a work song type thing. Going up a switchback with the breathing restriction is a wonderful workout. Quick puff in the car, feeling like a million bucks and out of breath in 15 minutes. super inspirational, I hope to have 10% that level of mojo one day.

This is simply fantastic! A phrasing like a guitar or a sax, at times it seems like a blues violin, warm tone and sweet phrases even if of a very high technical level, a goal out of reach for many, who knows, maybe one day, thanks for the video, instructive and beautiful even just to listen to!

It's so interesting to watch your eyes when you're soloing. It's as if they recede into your musical mind. They're not focused on the camera lens. It's as if you've quit accepting input from your eyes. This could all be in my head of course. But it's one of the things I got from this video.

Thanks for your gifts. I still don't believe it's humanly possible to do what you can with that 10-hole harmonica. Simply mindblowing. The standards you set make the rest of us realize that there are possibilities beyond our wildest dreams.

Fantastic explanation Howard. A perfect example of this is Benson’s solo on Love Ballad. He weaves in and out using the major and minor sounding elements of the blues you discuss here. Almost always major licks ascending, and minor licks descending 👏🙌

I always felt like a LOT of modern blues harmonica music is the exact same tongue blocked licks being played over and over again. It almost seems like a lot of people in the community who think that the bluesy harmonica sound has never and will never evolve because of a constant need to play 100% pure tongue blocking that I was told to comply to or I wasn't a real harmonica player. This is why I gravitated towards listening to a lot of Terry McMillan, somebody who had a more versatile and emotional sound, instead of Little Walter or Charlie McCoy. And the latter two were the players I was constantly told to sound like by other people on Facebook. They'd claim that they knew my audience better than I did and thought I needed to play fast licks and melodies for a country song, otherwise I'd "sound too much like a blues player", but it's not always the case in reality. The era of country music that I grew up on (90s-00s) had very soulful and bluesy harmonica playing, mainly from Terry McMillan. When I told them this, I got bullied and got banned in a couple of groups because of the powerhungry admins thinking that I am somebody who wants be manipulated into doing things that I don't want to do. That's why I want to help people, so they wouldn't fall down into a rabbit hole of despair and depression.

There should be no limitations on what notes express the blues...
@daiprout323Ай бұрын
At last, Facebook recommended something with watching. Lovely to hear my personal reasons for playing expressed by someone else... I was 4 years old and "fattening Ferris for snakes" was the first record I wanted played again and again. For a couple of decades I learned various instruments and tried to express myself in that same language which first spoke to me. Punk, post punk, grunge, metal, rock 'n' roll, cock rock...I never felt fulfilled. I took some time away from music, and when I returned it was playing harmonica in a blues outfit. Never been so happy. Unfortunately our local live music scene hasn't quite recovered, at least in respect of a vibrant blues scene.
