What the, this is sooo nice.. I didn't even know this is possible or even legal.. do you need to have your own gear or be a professional or something?
@ScratchesInmygelcoat3 жыл бұрын
We have our own gear. There are no restrictions on paddling in this area, but you need to know what you are doing and understand the dangers, take the right safety gear and know how to use it, read and understand weather forecasts. Glad you liked the footage. All the best.

@@ScratchesInmygelcoat Thank you thank you, was just wondering if this took you years of practice and experience to be able to do this?
@ScratchesInmygelcoat3 жыл бұрын
@@poppyblop484 I'd recommend that you had some experience first, up to the level of Sea Skills (A Paddle Aust. qualification), or go with an experienced paddler. For me, I have been paddling for years, started in rivers, then estuaries, then bays, then the ocean, then surf and rocks. it's a bit of a process.

Good stuff, thanks for sharing. I paddle out from Mosquito Bay every second weekend, I’d like to go down and check that out. Is that cave in Malua bay North head?
@ScratchesInmygelcoat5 жыл бұрын
Yep, its about 140m from the north end of the beach. We lucked out with a super low swell day about mid tide. I would imagine that it would pick up any swell from the south and get pretty narley. Stay safe. Lots of good caves at the Toll Gates as well.

your video does not show how you actually got the seat out of the boat and how you put the repaired one in. I've got mine loose but cannot manipulate it to get it out of the boat.
@seditioushalibut7 жыл бұрын
Don't know if you've answered your own question, but if not, I have a Northshore Atlantic boat that uses the Valley outfitting. I have removed my seat multiple times. 1. Detach any shock-cord and webbing that anchor the eat to the boat - varies by model 2. Remove the screws on either side of the coaming that hold the seat in place. 3. Slide the seat forward a few inches and rotate it 90 degrees left or right. This takes some finesse, but not much force. 4. Lift the seat out by the back/backband hth

Good information. Love the quick release you use. If I can add my 2 cents worth to your thoughts... One advantage of the waist mount system is that it's always with you. If you have to transfer to a shore rescue, you have a throw bag with you. Even if you fell out of your boat in ruff water, clip the line to your boat and the wind can't take it away from you. To clear rocks in big surf, you may need to send your boat out first so it doesn't hit you. For longer tows, release from your waist and clip the bag (end of rope) onto your boat, best of both worlds. I have a shock absorber built in my bag. Unfortunately it does take longer to stow after use. As far as a sinking line, I have to disagree strongly. The possibility of entanglement when the rope is floating, in my opinion, is far less dangerous than every time the sinking rope goes slack, the possibility of it snagging on something on the bottom and creating a second problem is very high. Maybe not so much in the open sea, but near shore, in shallow (less than 7m - half of your 15m tow line) can drag (and snag) on rocky or coral bottoms. In Canada, a 15m "floating" rope is a Coast Gard safety requirement you need to carry with you. Just my thoughts, paddle safe!

Happens eventually to everyone who goes in the rocks... Why I paddle the plastic boat in the mix ;-) You may know this, but Reed sells an excellent paddle holder for keeping your splits in place while you're getting pummeled. Nothing like swimming with the boat when it's nasty, and having your splits slide out. Cheers.

Pardon my cynicism, but the area you were paddling through looked as if you were asking for trouble, large rocks with 3 to 5 foot swells crossing them!!! I have never taken my kayak on to the ocean yet, but being a native Minnesotan and paddling Lake superior for years, I respect rocks and waves. Superiors waves a much closer together and the basalt shoreline and outcroppings make for some treacherous conditions, so I stay clear, besides lake superior has an average of 38 degree F water temp. capsizing is incredibly dangerous here. Glad you weren't hurt! live and learn

You say " I am told this is not normal." Unfortunately it is :-( Many had the seat crack in the same way yours did. Your repair method is very good in my opinion and until Valley produces a quality seat your solution is satisfactory. Supporting the seat from the bottom (space between hull/seat) is the key element. Thank you for your clean instructional video.
