Hi Jonny, in the video it looks like your index finger is splayed out quite a ways from the rest of your fingers. I'm not able to extend my finger this far and still put pressure on the inside of the disc. Are you able to grip the inside rim with that finger, or is it just resting on the outside of the disc?

Hi Johnny, thanks so much for making this content! I've got a tiny suggestion here for future vids. I'd love to see vids from a higher up camera angle using a tripod because I think it would make it easier to see the distance and shape of your throws. Also just wanted to thank you again for the content. I learned your grip is higher on the flight rings than it is for me and was impressed that your 20, 30 and even 60 yard throws look pretty much identical to me. You are the smoothest thrower I've ever seen. You make it look easy :)

Eh. I always see the traingle mark being broken time and time again, especially on dump swings back towards the middle. Good handlers can easily get around it with all kinds of throws, even in windy conditions. I find it way more effect, especially when forcing a flick, to be perpendicular to the handler's pivot foot without straddling and, instead of looking and reacting to the handler, look down field at what the handler is looking at and see if any of your teammates have been broken and if their cutter is wide open. It's a more efficient and smarter mark, especially when you 100% know that a cutter has beaten your man to the break side or a cutter is beating the crap out of your teammate for a potential 50 yard huck to the endzone. When you see these cutters and you know the handler is licking his lips to throw those passes, that's where you can actively take away that throw by adjusting your mark to cause the handler to hesitate just for a brief second to maybe not throw to that wide open cutter and have the stall count go way higher. I get a ton of errant passes when doing this mark and get way longer stall counts. Handlers also know that they can easily break you by faking you with their eyes if you're looking at their eyes. It's pointless when you have a good handler. They can't fake you when you exactly what they're looking at downfield. The other advantage is when you're allowing a throw to the sideline, you know exactly when the handler will throw and you can prevent a handler cut up field by immediately jumping and taking away the space the handler wants to cut to for a give and go. In that same situation you can communicate to your teammate to switch and also take away that handler cut upfield while you transition to taking the mark on the sideline with the opponent who just caught the disk. In short, this mark allows you to know what is happening on the field in real time instead of having to react to the handler or what your teammates are saying downfield or on the sideline. You can react way quicker, not exhaust yourself with pointless movements / guessing game and can make more effective adjustments to stop wide open passes and get the stall count much higher to force last second errant throws

I'm writing out the routine here because I keep forgetting and needing to rewatch the whole thing: - triangle of cones 15-20 yds away from the goal. discs at the top of the pyramid. - 1st set is force side unders thrown to same side of the goal (ie. flicks from the right to the right flat if you're a righty) - 2nd set is throwing to the opposite side of the filed (ie. you throw backhands from the right to the left side of the goal if you're a righty) - 3rd inside break throws to the same side (ie. backhands from right side to right side) - 4th break throws across to the middle of the goal (flicks thrown from the right side to the middle) - 5th is a set of arounds throws (so oi backhands from right side into the middle of the net from close range)

Honestly, I've always been average build, weak upper body (can do 3 chin ups max), no abs, and I can throw a backhand about 65 yards in no wind standing still (as in not a pull). Not the best, and not hucking goals from my own goal line like Nutt, but no gym time needed for decent damage. Just lots of practice.

I'd love to know just a little bit more about footwork when the person you are guarding creates contact with you in your deny position. For ex) you are forcing under they create contact with a hard cut deep. Is the only option to back pedal?

Jonny I've got a question for you.. if I'm cutting deep and receiving this kind of throw, is there any point in running on that curved, slightly incorrect path to more effectively box out my defender? Or should I just go straight to where I know the disc is going to be and jump for it from there? I frequently have taller people defending me bc I'm not the tallest, so boxing out is my default but I've overcommitted to the box out on these kind of throws and then not been able to actually catch the disc.

Another thing I noticed is that the defense doesn't seem to contest the resets - at all. What if you had a squirrely person on the dump? That could throw a wrench into the works. Otherwise offense never has to risk possession. Get a nice 7 second AUDL count too.

As an incentive for speed, I like to huck the disc to start the sprint, vainly trying to get to it before it stops (only got to the disc once…on a very windy day!). Time to get back out there Jonny!

Hey Jonny, great videos. Ik it's not your typical video style, but I think it might be interesting to do a video on your ACL recovery. I tore mine last August and am about 5 months post op. I just had my first major setback, and I think it would be cool to hear about how your recovery went and what you learned through your experience. Keep up the great work

i think the problem with spin moves on the ultimate field as contrast to basketball/football is that you really need to close the gap between you and the defender before it is effective.. otherwise if the gap is too big the defender is just standing there watching you spin.. think like low post spin move from olaijuwan.. basically when your back is to the basket with your defender on you, you spin that seals away the defender.. similar with a runningback or a widereciever.. you need very small gap to seal the defender.. this is a problem in ultimate that is similar to soccer.. spin moves aren't really as useful..

Great video, thanks! In trying to learn the forearm this summer, I've developed major pain in my shoulder (rotator cuff?). It's not necessarily that I'm trying to throw at 100% vs. 80% (like you say), I think it's my overall mechanics (though your video will help) but I also think I just need to build more muscle in the shoulder, arm, and core. Have you run into this issue? Any suggestions? I'm starting specific exercises for rotator cuff and core.

Working on shoulder-specific lifts and focusing on your core sounds like a great start! Also, make sure to consult the services of a licensed physical therapist. Nothing can replace quality care when it comes to addressing injuries!

How much rest do you take between sets and reps?
@JonnyMalks
@JonnyMalks Жыл бұрын
Hey Victor! Thanks for your question. Generally, a super light jog back to the line is a good amount of rest for these. That being said, if you're feeling winded, take more time, especially on the hollow sprints and flying 10s. Most of this workout is focused on getting you to your top speed within the amount of distance allotted, rather than focusing on cardio. Hope this helps!

@9:27 isn't the defence on the player playing the swing a defensive foul.. I'm seeing defence push the guy backwards..
@JonnyMalks
@JonnyMalks 2 жыл бұрын
Those kinds of plays are tough because it's the responsibility of a matchup pair to determine the appropriate amount of contact that each player is comfortable with. If the offensive player was uncomfortable with the defender's amount of contact in this instance, he would have the right to call a foul, thus signaling to his opponent early-on that he will not accept being pushed a little bit. That being said, it's important not to uphold a double standard. For instance, if the offender called a foul for pushing and then pushed a little bit when he played D, that would only anger his matchup and cause them to revert back to their earlier style of play. It's up to the matchup to determine the appropriate amount of contact, but yes a foul could be called there.

Hi Mattia! Great question! I think the main thing I would recommend is watching film. There are so many good free games on KZbin and Vimeo. Pick a few players whose defense you like after watching a couple games, and focus on them as they move throughout the field!
