I so remember this drum corp , i believe, in 1970 at Lynn, Mass for the DCI championship they only had half a drum corp due to a bus breaking down. If i remember correctly, they did an exhibition. That was the year the Troopers won it all with their star burst M&M. However. The Mariners put on an insane performance with an amazing M&M with half a corp and after concert, they proceeded to finish their program at the end of the field. That is when i saw Captain Crunch and his understudy go back on the field with serval feet between them. The understudy had a saber at which he threw spinning backwards towards Captain Cruch who was saluting and at which he brought his hand down he stepped to his reach up and caught the saber and thrusted point down into the ground. Then saluted again. The crowd went wild. Lucky for the Troopers that year because they would have lost that world open. My family still talks about that til this day. Amazing.

Fantastic article. Loved Prince's sweet hornline when they first pulled slides, espcially Jimmy Murphy's Sweet Ga. Brown. Saw them first in the late 50s at the Dream. Played at the indoor Drumfest with the Interstatesmen in the 60s. Their uniforms were so great, also the jackets and cutters. Competed against Prince in mid 60"s. Never knew George B directed them at one period 8. Thanks for the historical writing!

Everyone looks so young... if you could have seen 26 years into the future you would have played "You're Still a Young Man"... Hard to believe the corps was only 5 years old at that point.

I was at this show. Drum corps fans know quality when they see and hear it. COL Truman W. Crawford was our famous Yankee Rebels' drum major, arranger and instructor. He was with the Rebels when the corps won American Legion Natioanals in 1969, 1970 and 1971. I miss him to this day.

I had a Fleetwood recording and the name of it was the prince men 1958 and 1959. I played that record hundreds of times over and over again they would definitely one of the old-time great drum and bugle Corps has missed by many. The cover of the album had Prince been on the starting line with the judge looking down the line as a teenager I was super impressed

Ed Santoro was my Dad (RIP). He was so proud to have been a Princeman during their World Champion years! Oh the stories...the road trips: He and Paul Pelange, Frank Benoit, Jim Pinette, and Vinnie Gallant and many others, who became my "Uncles" and extended family in the Alumni years of Lt. Norman Prince! And let us NOT forget the Famous and Illustrious Arthur F. "Scotty" Chappell! Hail Hail to The Chief!! Wonderful Memories!

The post above was when I was first diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, it progressed to stage 4, was into my diaphragm. Today is February 4th 2022, my last scans and blood work after having a second surgery, I'm happy to be able to announce that I am totally cancer-free at this point. I am very fortunate, and had a great medical team. God bless all the men and woman that helped me survive. Boston Crusaders always and will be one of my favorite, drum and bugle Corps.

Just for interest, these were recorded in a VW Microbus using an Ampex 351-2-P running at 15 ips. Microphones were a pair of Neumann U48's set on cardioid. They were on on Atlas 7' booms with reach extenders and sand bags to hold them down. Their performance at The Dream [August 30, 1959] brought down the house !!! Nine other competing corps were recorded at that event, not all made it to record status.
