@capturedonline
@capturedonline Ай бұрын
@@neilmason158 thanks Neil, hope you’re on the mend. Ideally, you’d need a rod for each method, or at the very least two rods. Nymphing wise, I’d recommend a 10ft 3wt (the length for control and soft enough to protect light tippets). An ideal spider rod for me is 10ft 4 or 5wt and for dry fly, I personally use a 9ft 5wt but I know most use a 3-4wt. If you’re a competent caster, you ‘could’ get away with one rod for all, say a 10ft 3wt but it’s not ideal 👍

Loved that Lyn. Thank you. Wonderful looking stretch of river. Beautifully filmed and great to see a see someone doing a bit of wet fly fishing as well as euro. I notice you seemed to work downstream with your euro rig on a lot of occasions. Is this something you usually do when focussing on grayling? Do you always look to swing and raise the nymphs each run through before re-casting when doing this? Do you leave the flies to swing and “dangle” below you for long before recasting the wets? Cheers
@capturedonline
@capturedonline Ай бұрын
@@PhilWilkins-lm2jv thanks Phil, glad you enjoyed the video. You raise an interesting point. I don’t think it was a conscious decision to nymph downstream through the pools - I guess it was mostly about available access (or just being lazy!). But you’ve certainly got me thinking! I do try to swing my nymphs downstream of myself each cast, as fish can follow your flies (the induced lift): Of course, you’re also dislodging food from walking along the riverbed (grayling seem to be less cautious than trout, and are definitely attracted by this). Same with the wets I guess, I do catch fish at the ‘fished out’ position (and the lift/hang), but from my experience, these tend to be the smaller fish (of course, you lose a lot of fish too, as you’re essentially pulling the fly out of their mouths). Just my thoughts.
@PhilWilkins-lm2jv

Hi Lyn, Yes I enjoyed the new format. It would be fair to say I also have enjoyed your spoken videos also and learnt alot from both. I have a question -is there any reason to not use a more traditional nymphing style (my prefered method) as you do for fishing the spider set up, for nymphing also over Euro nymph style (which I have yet to have any success with)? many thanks Mark
@capturedonline
@capturedonline Ай бұрын
@@Markfishing-1 Hi Mark, glad you enjoyed, and thanks for the feedback. To be honest, I was only fishing the gold head nymph on the spider rod as it had some weight to get my spiders down (I wouldn’t consider this as nymphing). You can of course fish nymphs upstream with a traditional fly line setup, but for me, modern (Eurostyle) tight-line techniques are more productive - you often have hookups at the end of the drift on the downstream swing (induced take).

The beauty and calmness of these UK streams is striking. Unfortunately we don’t have much of this around here in the Netherlands. Which type of fly-line have you used here, if I may ask? Did you attach the French leader directly to the backing, or maybe to a specific euro nymphing fly-line? Stay strong 🙏🏻

Thanks for the feedback, indeed, we are very lucky with the rivers we have in the UK - you should visit! On this video, I'm using a setup where I've connected a 9m Hends French Leader to an old Rio Technical Euro Nymph line. I've since moved onto the 12m version which avoids any fly line being in my hand. Regards.
