@danshtr Yep! I originally created the web page because the KZbin channel is difficult to find. But there had been few views of the web page, so I dropped it. The Go Daddy system is a little difficult to understand. I think I have reserved the domain name for another year, but I let the hosting expire.

Classic rowing boats with a fixed seat often have much more freeboard than sports rowing boats. Does this have to be taken into account in the width of the outriggers and the length of the oars?
@oddman-out2 ай бұрын
Sorry for the slow reply, I have had relatives visiting. For sure the higher freeboard impacts the geometry of the install. I think the only way to figure it out is to put the boat in the water and see how it looks. The oar blades should not go into the water below the top of the blade, just barely buried in the water. You could adjust by raising the seat. You could adjust by using longer oars, but that would require longer outriggers, and I am not sure that is practical. Raising the seat may make your boat a little unstable. With longer oars you could also reduce blade size which would reduce the need to spread the oarlocks with a longer rigger. I have seen some boats where the gunwhale was cut down. You may need to settle for rowing the boat with the oars hitting you a little higher in the chest than is desirable. Unfortunately the geometry is complicated in that there are an infinite number of permutations, and probably more than one way to get there. I think I only paid $12 or something like that for the Kindle version of the rigging guide book, and you will probably want to have that to help with your modifications. Good luck!

Beautiful work! I hope to start working on mine this summer. Were you tempted at all by the sliding rigger? I'm a heavy rower (250+) so I'm a little worried about porpoising in the boat.
@oddman-out2 ай бұрын
Sorry for the slow reply. I was not tempted by the sliding rigger concept, but primarily due to the cost. I am assuming you are talking about this rig: www.rowingrigs.com/product-page/sliding-rigger-row-wing I think it makes sense conceptually, my boat does hobbyhorse a little as I row it. But it doesn't seem significant, and I have had such good luck with the Angus system that it didn't seem to make sense to try something new. I don't know what that weighs. The original in this boat weighed 25 pounds, and I am pretty sure the system I am using is around 5 pounds. The weight advantage more than offsets the disadvantage of the weight moving forward and aft (at least in my little pea brain!) AI seems to think the Alden rig weighs 18 pounds. Like everything else with these boats, there is a balance of cost and performance that will work for you.

Great video. how did you find this Ais receiver in the garmin mfd? we are looking at upgrading our sailboat network from nmea 1083 to nmea 2000 and this radio seems the most budget friendly way for the chart plotter to receive the radio and ais
@oddman-out4 ай бұрын
Most of the Garmin MFDs I have seen have a settings page, and from there a communications page. From the manual for this unit: Settings > Communications On this page were Serial Port, 0183, 2000, and wireless settings. Then: NMEA 2000 Settings - Select Settings > Communications > NMEA 2000 Setup. Device List: Displays the devices connected to the network. So finding the device list with the Radio/AIS unit shown was relatively straightforward. But it only appears when the unit is connected via 2000 and powered on. (Made that mistake once!) And this is an optional step just to reassure yourself it is connected, it works as soon as everything is hooked up and turned on. One of the things I love about the N2K network is how easy it is. If you have it connected right with the power and the terminators, the information exchange between units is seamless. I always struggled with the 0183 network whenever there was more than one device. I highly recommend the upgrade.

How's the paint on the skin-on-frame holding up? Have been considering doing the same but wasn't sure how well it would adhere.
@oddman-out4 ай бұрын
I used the Petit EZPoxy. It has held up really well. I have put more than 60 miles on it, probably 7 or 8 trips so far. I am very careful with it, the skin on frame makes me a little nervous so I never beach it, I just step out in shallow water and carry the boat ashore. So far there are no signs of any peeling or loss of gloss, no scratches, and it still looks really good. Below the waterline the builder had put a coat of clear polyurethane varnish, and that part is holding up well too. I am quite pleased with the passing job. I did use some Penetrol on the application, I think it helped get a smoother finish.

Ha, I searched for Lake Tapps and was hoping to see my old house, and there it was, to the right of the house for sale 😁 my house dwarfed in comparison and does to the majority of houses on the lake. It was one of the first built on Inlet Island by my grandparents. As a kid, the lots next to my house were vacant, and I spent my time playing in the trees and making forts. Those days are sadly gone! Thanks for sharing! It’s a fun and beautiful lake!❤

Monticello, not Montichello. The Monticello convention took place on tenant way, by lakeside industries. The town of Monticello was located there. They planted a tree to commemorate the occasion. The tree still stands today. There is a small white sign that says Monticello convention 1852 beside the tree. The town of Monticello got wiped out by a flood in 1867.
