Hello, Im a freshman in college and am really stressed about the DAT. Im hoping on taking it my junior year and start studying my sophmore year, is that realistic approach or should I just study for four months like you did?
@SmilesPendingАй бұрын
Everyone is different! I think you have to find a balance based on how strong you feel you are in every subject tested on the exam. I would also avoid studying too early prior to the exam because you might forget the info you learned in the beginning by the time you take it. I think starting 3-6 months before the exam is a good timeline for most people

I wouldn’t put it as research but you can add it as academic enrichment and describe it. Research is typically something you’d want to include if you’ve ever been published in research paper where you’re listed as one of the contributors

Hello Medina always appreciate you answering questions. Do you feeling like columbia (being known for one of the "specialty schools") helps the students that wants to specialize have more "free time" to study for their exams (ie. CBSE for OMFS) compared to state schools that has a lot of clinics starting at d1 (that focuses on general dentistry)? I know you are going for general dentistry, but from your observation / experience. thanks!
@SmilesPending8 ай бұрын
Our pre-clinic starts in D1 year spring. And in terms of time off, no people do not really get time off to study for these exams. Most people use the summer break between D1 and D2 year which is 3 months, or just study during the semesters. We don’t get long breaks off school starting from D2 year. It’s pretty much just 2 weeks in summer and 1 week of spring break and Christmas break. Even for board exams we can only request a maximum of 5 days off from clinic or rotations to study or take the exam which is a little sad because it used to be that you could get a month off but the rule was recently changed and admin is firm on sticking with it.
@Kyoutube1218 ай бұрын
Hello! quick question. are lectures recorded in columbia dental school? how many days did you usually attend school a week? all 5 days a week or fewer? thanks in advance
@Kyoutube1218 ай бұрын
Hi! also is columiba pass/fail or pass/fail/honors?
@SmilesPending8 ай бұрын
All the lectures are recorded but some courses have mandatory attendance that’s part of your grade so you have to be there for those. It depends on which year of school it is, but I was definitely on campus less my D1 year but as a D3 I’m there almost every day because I’m seeing patients in addition to class. And Columbia dental is just pass/fail no honors
@cair47428 ай бұрын
Are you worried about the amount of loans you will have to take out? Do you have to do a post-doc program if you choose to go to Columbia?
@SmilesPending8 ай бұрын
Please check out my dental school loans and finances video where I talk in depth about this. And no, you are not required to do a residency if that is not your choice. About 1/3 of my class will be doing general so it’s entirely a personal choice

What DAT score is good for those with below 3.0 GPA?
@SmilesPending9 ай бұрын
That’s difficult to say. But to be competitive it definitely needs to be above 21 AA. And if you have the option try retaking some classes or doing a post bacc to improve your GPA a bit
@juliemanuela2379 ай бұрын
do you think the medical school curriculum at columbia is beneficial or detrimental to someone who’s only interested in general dentistry (as opposed to OMFS)??
@SmilesPending9 ай бұрын
I’m going into general dentistry and I don’t think it can ever hurt. It makes you a better clinician because you can spot many systemic diseases before they progress to a severe state and refer your patient to their PCP for follow up and treatment

How is the prosthodontics program at Columbia? What kind of procedures do the students/residents do? Prosthetics is a specialty I'm interested in. Also, what is the LGBT representation like in your class? Are you able to have nights out in the city on the weekends?
@SmilesPending9 ай бұрын
Our prosth department is great. The head of the department Dr. Song is very supportive and personally helps supervise students through their removable prosth cases. The residency is pretty competitive from what I hear but I have limited knowledge about what they get to do since I’m not a resident. In terms of representation we have lots of students who are part of our Identity club which is an organization supporting and highlighting lgbt voices. And obviously if you want to have some fun in the city the world is your oyster lol

@SmilesPending10 ай бұрын
lol that’s not a rule. About a third of my class isn’t specializing and no one’s pushing us to. It’s just easier to do so out of Columbia as opposed to other places, and some people are more incentivized because specialists tend to make more and the debt is a lot to think about
