Absolutely loved this adventure & thank you so much for sharing it with all. WHat was your average fuel usage?
@MercedesOffRoadClub
@MercedesOffRoadClub 3 күн бұрын
Thank you! It was great up there in Arctic Circle. Average fuel was 12L\100km. Speed limits in Norway are more restrictive and drivers usually tend to go 5-10 less than actual speed limit, which is not always the case in other countries ;) So I ended up driving really slow, which additionaly lower average fuel consumption.

Great adventure, thank you for sharing. :) Fantastic places and the G is just perfect. :) Do you have any plans for additional heating in the RTT for colder weather? Regards from Sofia, Bulgaria. ;) :)

Thank you! This season after 4 years in garage was absolutely extraordinary in terms of trips and testing. After all I have some improvements list to do during this winter - Im also considering RTT heating, but to be honest I do not have any vision of this yet. I saw some YT videos. There are differents units that heat only air and some combo units that heat air and water. They also have some sort of combustion chamber which requires cold air inlet, electrical installation, gas exhaust which heats a lot, so I would like to think it through before I start using my angle grinder ;) Regards from Warsaw! ;)

@@MercedesOffRoadClub About heating the RTT, with me - i don't much like any of the options i saw so far, like an external/ portable heater with a tube for the hot air into the tent or a friend of mine locally, with a 4Runner and a webasto heater (for the engine), modified the "small circle" to extract additional tuning to the RTT on the roof, where he installed an intercooler radiator with additional fans. Effect is great, however solution in general from design perspective is not something i would follow. Maybe the option is additional internal insulation for the walls of the tent, from inside and a better/ thicker sleeping bag. ;-) I would be follo;wing what you would come to as an approach. And of course the to-do list for the winter, with improvements. :-) Aside from considering the Mercedes 6-speed manual (we talked about in comments to another video), is there any other big change / improvement that you are considering? :) All the best ! :-)

I think that with the heater the requirements for such a system are complicated. This is always a combination of some sort of heat exchanger. You must be albe to generate the heat and direct it to air or water. If the heat exchanger is based on burning fuel then it complicates even more. Fuel lines, electrical connections, controller, air intake, exhaust, blower, water connectors, very easy way to fall into problems when designing from scratch ;) When it comes to modifications, I already have in garage Merc box 716.657 (SG-S400/6.1). Now I search for dual mass flywheel, and this is going to be major change. I also would like to fabricate water tank that will be under the body with all the nessecary additions like proper water inlet, basic filters, more quiet water pump etc. This inside cabin tank didnt work well enough. I would also like to fabricate aluminium transfer case protection - I made it with 6mm steel, its super strong, I like it, but its little bit too heavy ;) There are also some small improvments comming in overlanding drawer system and additional electrical installation, but they are very minor

Nice build. Just a note of caution, as the body is mounted to the frame using rubber bushings, there is some movement during driving between body and frame. Therefore, you'll have some vertical movement between your top and bottom hinge of your tire carrier frame (assuming your custom bumper is mounted to your frame). Just keep an eye on any potential wear caused by this.

It is excellent result in my opinion. I have a 4.2 td 24v Toyota Land Cruiser 80 series, quite different ratios - 3.7 ring and pinion, 0.88 fifth gear (manual), 255.85.16 Toyo MT tires and with 110/120 km/h i am at same 12.3 to 12.5 liters. Very nicely restored G class, congratulations. :) I am with Cruisers for many years, the current is my 8th, but i like these particular G wagons too. :)
@MercedesOffRoadClub
@MercedesOffRoadClub 28 күн бұрын
Yes, I did not expect that either. When I was rebuilding G I was expecting ~15, but my result is at the level of my previous engine (om603 no turbo) and that is more than satisfying. When I was in Norway (Nordkapp trip) I made almost 8000km and I was driving a little below norway speed limits (very restrictive) I came even below 12 liter/km. My mother worked in Toyota Motor Poland for 30 years, so I have sentiments for Cruisers/Hilux ;) Before G-Wagon I had Unimog 404 and this was whole another story ;) Cheers!

@@MercedesOffRoadClub I reviewed most of the videos in your channel yesterday, fantastic trips around Norway and Finland. Obviously, besides excellent mechanical skills you have "an eye" for shooting videos and photography as well. :) Again, congratulations for the project. I like approaches like yours where everything is performed clean and up to level from start to finish with a very good and completed idea in mind. The G is equipped with all necessary for travel, close to the original look, without being over "decorated". :) One question (have many actually) - why did you decide on the 6 speed manual from BMW? Why not the 6 speed manual from Mercedes? Talking about vehicles and as you mention Toyota, i have a very beloved 80 Series (my fifth and 8th cruiser in total, after 3 Patrols and 1 Defender) but my next desire is a Sprinter 4x4 project. :) Cheers and have a great week! :)

Thank you for this comment, very much appreciated. Yes the color idea of this project was to keep it tasty/simple/no fancy as much as possible. Gray body paint and everything else black mat, simple two color. Now the hard question about bmw gearbox. So I have around 18 tkm done with G and yes my only concern is this single mass flywheel. So when I was ordering engine parts (IP pump and turbo for om606) I also bought this adapter and clutch for this bmw gearbox. it was supposed to be stronger than Merc boxes. This was my first ever rebuild of that size, so I wanted to have at least this out of horizon long todo checklist (I didnt know dual mass would keep up om606). At that time bmw and this adapter plate seemed to be a reasonable choice. Now after many kilometers I would never go with a single mass flywheel for manual gearbox and almost 3 tone overlanding vehicle. Winter is coming and this is on my todo list - I will swap to merc box with dual mass flywheel or keep bmw box (I have all the mounts, driveshaft, gear stick done) and try to fabricate some dual mass - fits from Sprinter V6. I need to make some updates to video about swapping this bmw gearbox to G as well. Now I would go with Merc box. But I guess this is going to be my learning curve. Cheers and greetings from Poland to you and all your overlanding Cruisers and Sprinter project! ;)

Hi :) in which rpm starts turbo spool up? And when is fully? How much bar do you push? Thank you for your answer 🙂
@MercedesOffRoadClub
@MercedesOffRoadClub Ай бұрын
You may be disappointed with my answer but I'm registering max 0,5 bar on my cabin gauge. As you may know I went through entire rebuilt. It was pretty a lot of things and some issues came out. Hopefully I didn't have any with engine, so I just took turbo out of the box, bolted it to exhaust manifiold at time of engine rebuild - I didn't regulate this exhaust gas bypass valve at all. I jumped straight to other more important things to make G-Wagon drive. Now I have it running and yes I'm considering regulating this valve and making video about that, but I'm not going to that like next week. For now I can tell you that diffrence between old om603 and current om606 is very big. I'm not embarased to join highway traffic now. This new engine pulls very nice, but still this om606 doesn't make this G-Wagon "fly" like smaller personal cars - ready to trip is 2900 kg so that's some substantial mass to pull. The spoll starts just over 2000 rpms and engine feels strong 2400-2500 for 5th/6th gear - it is my crusing rpms for highway (~100km\h). ~2500 rpm is strong enough for 6th gear pulling fully loaded G-Wagon and still quiet enough inside cabin - I would call it a good compromise. Since it is overlanding vehicle I don't see any point of reving this engine crazy and making temporary high torque. Hope that helps you.

Hi , you Mentioned you used 100Ah battery instead of 150Ah like the manual advises. I also want to use 1x100ah battery with this inverter and power a 1200w nespresso machine. Do you think this would work? I have a 100ah lithium battery with a max discharge of 200ah at <3 secs. And can handle a constant discharge of 100ah. Let me know your experience i would love to Know.
@MercedesOffRoadClub
@MercedesOffRoadClub 2 ай бұрын
I think Victron places reasonable values in manuals, so that battery life is preserved. A stronger inverter is probably supposed to deliver power to more demanding devices, so if you want to have reasonable working time that's also the case of that min 150Ah. But I also think that it could be different for agm or lithium. There are both batteries but they are both different animals inside. For lithium this max Ah probably could be lower as it can deliver higher current and can be discharged lower. This higher Ah for 1200VA version also corresponds to possible higher current demand. I have it connected to my 100Ah agm exide dual battery and so far it works, but after I installed it I did not push it to any limit. I always wanted to have one and during my very recent 3 weeks trip to Nordkapp I used it only to charge my laptop and electric shaver, what a shame. For me the absolute game changer was solar installation, this is a great helping hand for keeping the battery charged (in sunny conditions obv). After all if you connect it to your 100Ah what can go wrong? You will reduce battery life by a few percent? and maybe not even at all, you can always replace it, that's just a battery ;)
@chriestoff2
@chriestoff2 2 ай бұрын
@@MercedesOffRoadClub thanks for your feedback. Just fyi, so i connected it to my 100ah yesterday and connected the nespresso 1200-1310w , i made two coffees no problem, the inverter didnt even work hard. So yes i agree with you, the battery life may be shortened a little but still does what its supposed to do, also dont use this everyday only on overlanding trips etc. So far so good :)

It is not the Ampere Hours (ah) but the A Amperes your battery can deliver you should look at if you are using LifePo4 batteries. A lifePo4 battery of 100A max can deliver 100A * 12,6v = 1260w. If you go over the 1200w for a longer time the BMS will shut down and protect the battery. If you are running regular AGM and led acid batteries it is different, then you need larger battery for it to be able to deliver the 1200 watt you need for longer times. A 100AH AGM typically can deliver 800 - 900A but only for 30 seconds, and 100A / 1200w it will also struggle to deliver for longer times. The ampere hours is the total energy the battery can deliver over longer time, typically measured over 24 hours with low consumption for leisure batteries. A battery rated at 100Ah does not mean it actually can deliver 100A for 1 hour...
