What size nib is this (meaning line width not physical size or number designation)?
@gregs.26792 күн бұрын
I dunno if it's still "the best" or ever was, but I sure like mine, the plain charcoal grey version that usually appears to be classic black because it's translucent only when held up to the light. If I had known about Japanese pens as a kid, I wouldn't have saved up my money for what seemed like forever for the Montblanc 149 that I bought in the sixth or seventh grade.

Found Mont Blancs to be scratchy, stiff uninteresting writers. Unfortunately, they are at a price point where mere competence is not noteworthy. Unfortunately, I have 10USD pens which are more fun than the MB I have (inherited). Currently very taken by a Pilot Prera Iro-ai in red trim with a fine nib. A line so fine, you think you could write a sonnet on a ladybird's back.

Is the nib Fine or Extra Fine?
@grossevernor6 күн бұрын
I consider a modern 149 to be a very middle of the road MB and not really a grail pen for many serious pen people. A fair comparison would have been a vintage 149 with a flex nib or a special writer's edition MB. Personally, between the MB, Delta, and Visconti its a push. Some Namiki pens would definitely satisfy the title of this video, but across the board, namiki is not better. I've received two Namiki Nippon art pens as gifts, and they are no where near the quality of a 149. On the other end, my namiki emperor is my personal grail pen. Also, I don't understand how Dupont was left off of this list.

I agree with your points. Fountain pens are definitely not budget-friendly unless you go for a cheap pen and only fill from the bottle for the rest of your life. Ballpoints are way more economic than most fountain pens. They are luxury items, but functionally they were made obsolete by almost every other type of pen out there. Also, I think there's this weird perception among people who know very little about pens that the heavier the pen, the nicer it feels. If I could go back in time, I would tell myself that this was the worst way of thinking I could've had about fountain pens or any other type of pen. There's a reason why Montblancs with their precious resin cost hundreds while a cheap Duke pen from china costs just $20 with an all metal body.

I have done a similar exercise, not with a word but with first initials of my given and family names. I was trying to make a stylistic design for a letterhead. It was interesting and I think I may have come up with one. Minimum is a perfect word to try the same idea. The lines and curves work very well together.

Is it possible to put the nib and the ebonite feed in a modern one and use it like that?
@kristmalisse945614 күн бұрын
I have a MB 149 two tone 18 k. The writing is VERY average..to not say disapointing. I let do the servicing bij MB in Germany and when I got my 149 back, they had REMOVED THE EBONITE FEED!!!!! Without saying anything.. They put a plastic feed instead on it, wich makes the pen even write WORSER. This has become a series mades fountain pen that has more to do with marketing and status then anything else. They used to be good somes decades ago, with the ebonite feeds. But to earn even more money, they put PLASTIC FEEDS instead. If you want a really good fountain pens that excells in writing experience looke elsewhere.

That's such a low bar to be honest. MBs are jewelry. I don't use my MBs as daily drivers.

The Pelikan M200 is one of my two workhorse pens (the other is a Platinum Procyon with a fine nib), it handles every ink without problem and the medium nib works on all sort of paper, the bounce on the nib is also really pleasant for a steel nib.

I bought that exact pen and I was planning on using it as my main pen for journaling in my mole skin I found that the medium nib was too aggressive on the paper and overall the pen was too light and inconsistent on its ink delivery for my liking. The good news is I bought it for $18 plus the additional eight dollars for the ink pump so I’m not that disappointed. For me it’s overrated.
