Hm. I thought those bars are used for foundation-less frames? They give the bees a place to start from, so they don't go wild. If you add wire and melt wax foundation on it, you don't need to do that - I think. And then there is plastic foundation which I've seen people push into that "split" and attach it with molten wax?

I figured it out, you actually use it to clamp down aka cleat the top of wax foundation and nail them in place. Some pre-wired foundation actually leaves some protruding wires to wrap around the cleat. My mistake thinking it was a flaw. Just had not explored beyond the usual consumer style hobbyists product.

First comment. Living at altitude gives you extreme conditions. Moisture from the location under the tree?

Relative humidity has been in the high 30s for a number of weeks. Used one technique to keep any rain out by tilting the hive. Other things can be introduced to absorb condensation, which I have not done. Maybe next winter.

Good lookin dogs. In the wild sometimes comb is exposed. Let them ride and slot next one. Use lemon grass oil and some wax foundation from dead out in storm trap. Best I can tell 8-10 feet up.

All my swarms found locations under things. They showed up in a tree higher up then settled under the house within a day.

I hear you. Just came back from a quick check of the other hive. So far eating all the sugar candy I have made, eating on the pollen substitute. I see bright orange pollen on some foragers. They are still feisty and the colony seems to be getting larger. Still too cold to go any deeper than that.

Thanks, the acid in the vinegar is to help convert the sugar into fructose and glucose.

I bought exactly the same metal entrances for my bait hives. I also received the tiny version. Last year I used just lemon grass oil and some wax foundation. It worked fine. This year I'll also add some old comb. I don't worry about filling bait hives with all the required frames. 2 or 3 is fine. I collect the swarms long before they draw out that much comb, then put them into a standard hive box.
