My locals in the uk makes use of Neuron for match recording since march-april 2023 - for the judge's convenience - however we do not use the numbered tables often as all duels involving kids happen right next to the judge's spot to help the kids if they need it (and to keep an eye on language used near them) When i started going there i got asked by a few people what i was planning to build and i said Lavals (i love those guys) and just got some cards i needed like hyper lib and even got to buy a Duel Terminal prints of some cards later on

Thank you for making this video. I am currently studying abroad in Japan and have been playing in the OCG since October. I have met some really cool people and it's a lot of fun. Im taking level 3 japanese at my school right now so it really helps knowing a decent ammount of Japanese. As well as studying the vocab that is common in Yugioh. I appreciate that you put in effort to learn a bit of the language to communicate with people it really does go a long way.

Any game with a ranking system where winning a game makes you go up 1/10th of a rank and losing takes you down a third of a rank or more is just a sisyphean social experiment.

floo is such an interesting choice because on its own it plays super linearly, but when there's interaction the gamestates can get super gummy and complex so i cant imagine how nightmarish that might get in a foreign language good to hear it went well!!!

Me and a buddy wanted to play yugioh in Japan and decided against it, but when we got to the radio kaiken building we saw a shop selling decks and decided to pick one up and try to go play at a locals. We both quickly looked up terms and went to 2 separate locals. We had a wonderful time and I think the preparation you put in is really good but I think it is more than needed.

Awesome video! I am the friend who played in Japan and wanted to add one thing! I forgot my Voiceless Voice deck when we visited the shop in Akihabara. Luckily, they had additional preconstructed decks that were not official Konami products available for purchase that I was able to pick up for relatively cheap. If you find that you are unable to order cards ahead of time, this could be an option for you. I was able to purchase a Mannadium deck that I was familiar enough with to play that day.

Yeah, that was really convenient! I have no idea what that product even was, I looked it up and it definitely was not one of the tactical-try decks like I showed at 4:17. It's really interesting that they have that kind of thing. I'm not sure I saw anything like it in Kyoto or Osaka besides the tactical-try decks.

Neuron did help with a lot with foreign languages, back then in high school 2013 i worked my ass off to learn Japanese just so i can play Yu-Gi-Oh with the adult in my area, Indo might be not officially supported back then and i can bought tcg cards if i can, but the price difference is absolutely unacceptable for high school students like me to justify buying TCG cards.

好き can be used to indicate something as your favorite, like 好きな食べ物 to mean "favorite food". ちょっと is interesting, basically it can be impolite to outright say you dislike something in Japanese. Therefore, people often say Xはちょっと and trail off instead of finishing the sentence with some kind of negative adjective.

There was a ton of very cool decoration at all the shops I went to, not to mention rows and rows of glass cases displaying all the cards on sale! I wish I had taken more photos, they had framed artwork of a lot of different monsters, and Card Box even had a wall of hieroglyphics and illustrations from the anime. My partner did request to be Ojama Green, but asking someone which Ojama they want to be depicted as feels akin to asking someone which golf club they wish to be whacked with.

Good video idea! I'm planning to finally visit Japan next spring and if I'm still actively playing Magic when I go I might have to make the pilgrimage to Hareruya. Magic's a bit easier though, don't need to learn new cards or decks that I haven't seen in English. I've never travelled anywhere that I used a language learning app for, how much would you say Duolingo helped with Japanese? Your pronunciation was quite good.
@OutOfCharacters
@OutOfCharacters 5 күн бұрын
I almost didn't recognize you lol, thanks for taking a look! I would say Duolingo's greatest strength is how easy it is to use and the various gamified means it motivates you to consistently practice. If your goal is to learn quickly, I think there are better ways. It does a particularly poor job explaining Japanese grammar. I still keep up with it, but I've transitioned into other resources like Anki for Kanji and vocab/Cure Dolly's grammar youtube playlist to supplement the app.

Hey there! First of all I love your videos. I've personally played in quite a few tournaments during my trips to Japan but haven't entered in any of the Official Satellite store tournaments. I had a ton of fun playing at unofficial tournaments in Tokyo such as "Ram Cup", "Fukufuku CS", and "Tulio_CS". People were incredibly welcoming despite the language barrier and I even made some friends that I still keep in touch with to this day! I was allowed to play with my TCG English cards in these events but I tried to pick up as much as I could in Japanese just to use as translations. It's amazing how Yugioh is a language in and of itself as communicating with my opponents was really easy outside of a time where I tried to explain that my opponent couldn't use OSS to put back a banished card with it's graveyard effect 😅 One thing to note about their use of Neuron, the EU region does the same for pairings and decklist submission at YCS's and even some regionals! It's still strange to me that the technology IS there and the US still doesn't use neuron for anything 😅😅
@OutOfCharacters
@OutOfCharacters 5 күн бұрын
Thanks so much, I have a ton of appreciation for your work as well! Yeah, I did find that communicating with my opponents was pretty easy, even with my broken Japanese from the sheet it was very simple for people to understand what I was doing and for me to understand what my opponents are doing. I've heard that a lot of YCSs in Latin America can be like that since there are a mix of English and Spanish speakers. I would imagine that comes up in European YCSs and WCQs too. I had no idea that Neuron was used in the EU, the US regional I went to used some kind of third party website for pairings for the regional, though you could find them in Neuron as well. I am kind of surprised that it's just the US that's getting the short end of the stick where when everywhere else seems to have transitioned to the better system.

@@OutOfCharacters It's certainly possible to lose more often than average! If for no other reason than your most common pick loses to the local population's most common pick. "Worse" implies a skill element though, and I don't think that's true if you RPS a new person each time.

I think the solution is relatively simple: Have the time only go down when you are actually logged in, keep it 72 hours of gametime but give more than 3 days to obtain it. Not only do you mitigate the insane health risks you’re putting on your players, remember-not everyone has the ability to dedicate 72 hours straight to a video game. The greatest Yu-Gi-Oh player in the world could be Dan Smith from Connecticut, but he would never qualify for this because he has to go to his 9-5 accounting job in order to feed his family of four and he can’t take any sick days because he already used them up when he got pneumonia one time and his boss is breathing down his neck about completing in time for quarter and- Point is, if Dan has the skills, he should be able to prove it without real life getting in the way.

23:47 This is wrong. He couldn't raise in DP if he beat coughing babies with 0 DP since his average gain from a win would probably be 1000 but his actual gain from wins on average was 1003. The reason why he gained more than 1000 DP on average was that he sometimes faced tougher opponents.

The issue probably is that there isn't enough punishment for losses in the dc. People need to have a certain fear of losing, but in these tourneys it seems only the sheer amout of games (still with good winrate I know), is important. That is not the same with the OU ladder, it is a very well fleshed out system that rewards excellent winrate and heavily punishes losses to weaker opponents.
