I know tone preference is very subjective, but the Renaissance head produces a much clearer note than the top frosted.

Thanks for sharing this. My wife just received, literally today, an Alvarez Minstrel MIJ that's going to need a pro going through. She's a finger picker guitarist, & for years people have told her to take up the banjo.

I believe most Tops tap tune to G#... or that's what I've always seen and used myself...not F#.. But that might not make much difference.

That's a good crew. Aaron Ramsey is a super musician as well. I ran around with Darrell when he was young, at my local fair. What a time.

i know this video is kinda older but, what happens if the tailpiece is pressed too far down and the strings come loose?, i think i fucked myself and i don't know how to fix it
@stevenjames6604
@stevenjames6604 4 жыл бұрын
Do you just means the strings came out of the tailpiece? You can always loosen the strings, adjust your tailpiece, then tighten the strings back up.

I much prefer the frosted head. Thank you for sharing. I'm hunting for the right banjo for me (without being able to try them out at the store since there aren't any near me) and this is really helpful!

To my ear the renaissance mids would work real well in a solo situation or fiddle duo. The Weatherking works well in groups helping to cut through. Thanks for a good comparison!

Of course, you should go with what sounds best to your ear, but I have to disagree with you on the sound. To me, the Renaissance sounds bright and crisp. The second frosted head sounds like it’s muting out the higher frequencies, and makes the tone duller and less interesting. I see you’re playing an archtop.are you sure that the second head is the right size crown? An archtop needs a low-crown head. Good luck, and thanks for putting out your video.

It is certainly all subjective. One thing that I will mention, though, is that the audio quality in this video does not really do justice to the sound of either head. I wish I knew how to record better quality audio.

The first step in adjusting a Presto style tailpiece is to take it off and replace with a Kershner.
@whovisionsCGI

I think the first adjustment removing the screw on the tailpiece opened up the tone better and would be my preference. Personaly I would tap tune the head to G# or A. Nice pickin, and thanks for taking the time to make this video.

Thanks for the interesting video, dude. After the 1st change, the banjo sounds shallower to me. There's a bit more treble, but less mid- and lower-end, and the banjo's original "sparkle" is gone. After the 2nd change, it sounds muffled. The extra treble is gone. By comparison with the initial sound, it's almost as though you're playing through a telephone. After the 3rd change, most of your tone and range are back, and there's a bit more depth than the initial sound. So I can't help wondering how the banjo would've sounded if you'd skipped the first two changes and gone right to the 3rd!
