Thanks for sharing this. My wife just received, literally today, an Alvarez Minstrel MIJ that's going to need a pro going through. She's a finger picker guitarist, & for years people have told her to take up the banjo.

Of course, you should go with what sounds best to your ear, but I have to disagree with you on the sound. To me, the Renaissance sounds bright and crisp. The second frosted head sounds like it’s muting out the higher frequencies, and makes the tone duller and less interesting. I see you’re playing an archtop.are you sure that the second head is the right size crown? An archtop needs a low-crown head. Good luck, and thanks for putting out your video.

It is certainly all subjective. One thing that I will mention, though, is that the audio quality in this video does not really do justice to the sound of either head. I wish I knew how to record better quality audio.

I know tone preference is very subjective, but the Renaissance head produces a much clearer note than the top frosted.

I like the first head best. It is all a matter of preference, so do with what you like best.:o)

I much prefer the frosted head. Thank you for sharing. I'm hunting for the right banjo for me (without being able to try them out at the store since there aren't any near me) and this is really helpful!

The Renaissance has a lot more depth. Thanks for the comparison! Sweet pickin' dude. I'm just starting, converting from 17 years of guitar, Its frustrating but sooo much addicting fun.

To my ear the renaissance mids would work real well in a solo situation or fiddle duo. The Weatherking works well in groups helping to cut through. Thanks for a good comparison!

Thanks for the nice comments! Good luck with the transition, banjo is really addicting. The first tune was Three Men on a Mountain, I believe.

Would you show a video of how you tune your head tension on the archtop?
@stevenjames66047 жыл бұрын
Hey Kelly, I'm no expert and head tuning, but I may see if I can make a video with a guy that really knows what he's doing and show different methods of doing it!
@KG-Punk7 жыл бұрын
Yah that would be great the only ones i can find are people using a drumdial or tapping the head and being able to hear the note it makes which i cant tell. So that would be great if you could show another method. Thanks
