I suspect the same is true of speaker cables since some cost over $25,000 and could not cost more than a few hundred, if that much, to manufacture.

The Dragon was the last analogue deck I owned, before that it was a BX300E and the 680ZX. All in all, the Dragon was the worst Nakamichi deck. Not because it sounded bad, no, it was due to mechanical problems with the tape path. In reverse mode, it left a slight bend in the lengthwise direction of the tape, killing the high frequency range. Several adjustment attempts by a specialist workshop failed and after some struggle, the deck was replaced, but unfortunately it had the same problem, although not as pronounced and only with certain tapes from one brand, all of which were expensive. If I had known then, I would probably have switched to the CR7 or a B215.

1st computer was Dell Dimensions Pentium 2 350 Mhz in 1998. Bought it for school and didn't think of gaming on it since I had a N64 and thought computers suck for gaming. Friend came by and did a back flip when he saw my system, took me to EB Games to buy a 3dfx Voodoo 2 PCI gpu and half-life, installed it, loaded up half life, and could not believe the graphics. I nearly did a back flip out my window in astonishment

NAK's are garbage and poor quality. Any experienced technician can confirm that. There's only 1 deck that's superior build quality and absolute reference level - ReVox B215

From an objective point of view, the sources and their connections are always flawless compared to the speakers of any cost, like 1000x better. On any system, any extra money should be spent of the speakers and amps that can support them.

The 3rca cable was probably twice the length. Additionally, the shape of a loose cable alone increases interference due to the angles of the wire vs the angles of the interference sources. A short cable always performs better. Expensive cables also increase repair profit because they destroy ports by weight and stress when moving racks, cleaning, hitting the wall, getting stressed to reach devices, etc.

A South Korean arcade developer Eolith (Later known as 'Neolith') used QS1000 sound chips for their arcade games from late 1990s to early 2000s. Examples like Raccoon World, BnB Arcade, etc.

I bought a Yamaha SX1000XG in ~2000, when I was 16 years old. We only really had soundfonts back then, VSTs were very much in their infancy (and expensive, too). I even obtained two of the extension cards a few years later, when somebody I studied with said I could have his. I still have them all, too, up in my loft. Doubt they're much use nowadays.

The ultimate DOS soundcard is the one that let's you connect a MIDI synth to it, the sound was messed up in almost every single game, the gravis was a jack of all trades and master of none, both monkey island games use wrong instruments and timings.

One of the top three speakers I have ever had the pleasure to listen to. First place of course is the JBL 4350. NOTHING can come close. Second I feel is the Magneplanar Tympani, say what you will. Solid third is the NS-1000m's. Best imaging on the planet, there...I said it. Great review sir!

Karl, can you pleeeease upload images of the CD and Diskettes to the Internet Archive website? You cand use WinImage7 (probably other versions too), to make floppy images. Also please be sure to check/compare the finished image file, against the diskette, also from the WinImage menu. Thank you! And also thank you for the excellent videos! :)

yeah too bad these have become so expensive. But picogus has satisfied my needs. The FM emulation is pretty rough and the the digital sound blaster is ok. I think the best is pairing a GUS with another card with SB pro and real FM. My ultimate setup right now is a picogus 2.0 with a mt32pi wavetable card with a als007 (w/ ymf262) with the x2gs wavetable.

SB AWE32 is not the same as AWE32, there were many crappy variants. Only the CT2760 was the real AWE32, with a real Yamaha FM chip. But be careful! There are also versions A & B of the CT2760. It's just sick what Creative did there 😱
@moeschizlac
@moeschizlac 24 күн бұрын
You didn't need to replace the GUS. Did you know you can have more than one sound card in a system? You should have kept the GUS along side the AWE32, install both sound card's dos driver, initialize both cards(autoexec), connect an audio cable from the line-out port of the AWE32 into the line-in(GUS internal mixer) port of the GUS, connect the line-out port of the GUS to the speakers. The GUS dac can be used to process the audio for better audio quality.

(Insert random comentary about how odd it is for someone to make a video about pc98 without mentioning touhou is here) That being said, at least as far as playing stuff trough emulation, the pc98 is really fun and interesting to dive into, lot's of fun and obscure games, sure very few of them are english translated, but on the good side, if you wanna learn how to read japanese, you have an entire library of games to practise..... even though you already have that on windows.... lol

The Soundblaster AWE32 has a working driver for Windows XP (ctlsb16.sys, 5.1.2600.0). It even supports the AWE functions and the wavetable header. My DB50XG daughterboard runs great and without any problems on the AWE32 ISA in XP. So - ISA soundcard in Windows XP is a possibility. 😃 Windows 7 is different story. 🙁

For the "ultimate build" I'd recommend putting in a SiI3124-based card for your SSD(s). The SiI3124 provides up to 4 SATA II ports and has AHCI support (and it works perfectly from DOS up to Windows 7 (afaik the ICH5 ports are only 'SATA I' and have no AHCI mode).
