In June 1982 aged 20 i Was in the British Army & our Troop Commander decided we'd do The Haute Route with Zero experience! Enjoyed it at the time but always knew that i'd never do anything like that again. The biggest difference from then to now is the complete lack of snow & ice. Must be at least 60/70% loss!!

Hi there, that's interesting and also a bit worrying. we did it in September so it was probably the least snowy time of year. But i'm sure overall snow cover has reduced.

Really great video guys! I am planning my own trip from the Netherlands to Northern Italy, but I notice getting a lot of questions. Such as, would you recommend doing this alone? And do you think its safe for a 20 year old guy to do this by himself? Also what kind of things did you eat? I suppose it were mainly cold dishes as you won't be able to cook a meal. Anyways, really cool that you guys documented your entire walk for us to watch and learn from :), Noah

Hey! thanks for watching and it sounds like you have a great trip planned. In answer to your questions, I did it with my brother and loved sharing the experience, but we met many people walking long distances on their own and they seemed very happy. So I think that's a personal preference. It is obviously a bit safer doing it with someone incase you run into issues like injury, getting lost etc. I think its more important that you are well prepared and respectful of the terrain and weather. If you are, then doing it alone should be fine. We carried a small light weight stove so ate hot food every night. We usually carried 3-4 days of food that we picked up in village stores or supermarkets in larger towns. Hopefully that helps a bit and feel free to ask anything else and if I can help I will. I hope you have an amazing trip :) Jake

Blimey that got to the end quick. I finally made it back Jake to finish Part 2. Wow, what a journey. There were so many highlights - as an identical twin myself I resonated with your experiences of the spectacular views, the camps, the miles and you descending down into the Doub Valley. Hard days a lot of the time but magic days especially with the French family and friend and of course your grand parents. How good was that new boots and all? Having lost my dear twin this was so special to watch. Thank you guys for walking for water. It's what Paul and I did walking every river of the Wye system in the UK. Hello, it was an amazing walk. Wales is one of my favourite places. There were lots of places to resupply on food along the route. In some places, on a daily basis, but in others you would have to carry up to 3 days of food. So the pack weight changed depending on that. The bags were probably on average around 15kg. All the best on your adventures. Jake

Hey, I bet you are excited, not too far away now. We did generally follow the route but the second half of the trip was so wet that we had to alter our route a bit and avoid some of Snowdonia's highlights. But either way, 3 weeks felt like a good pace if following the route exactly. The filming and photos did make walking a bit slower so you may be able to more miles in a day than we did. Have a great trip!

What an absolutely amazing video. Spectacularly edited and beautiful to look at, I could honestly watch it all day. Over the last 2 years I've become quite obsessed with hiking and spending as much time as I can out in the wild. I am yet to do cambrian way but your video has definitelly planted that seed now and am going to have to start planning. I've done the beacons way and it was probably the best thing I have ever done. I have a few questions about your trip if you don't mind? Was it purely map and compass you used or did have a handheld gps at all? How often do you do these types of trips? And can I come on the next one 🤣?
@jakegraham5640
@jakegraham5640 Жыл бұрын
Hey Anthony, sorry for the slow reply. Thanks for your message, and kind words. I haven't done the Beacons Way but it looks great. You are right, it is obsessive and it feels like doing the longer walks makes even more seem possible. I highly recommend the Cambrian Way, and you can pic alternative routes if you are not up for some of the peaks. We did a lot of that in Snowdonia as we had such rainy weather. Yes we (my brother and I) always use a map and compass. We have never used GPS or a mobile to navigate on any of our walks. This is just personal preference though as we like the idea of using a physical map and seeing the greater area. It makes the experience feel more authentic. Obviously it makes your pack bit heavier. The cicerone guide is also great! I would say we do these trips every couple of years but always have lots of ideas in the pipeline. I have vids from the other big walks on my channel. Good luck with the Cambrian Way if you decide to do it and ask away if there is anything else you want to know about the route . :)

Thank you so much for this wonderfull video. It brought some memories back as I visited South Wales quiet often a couple of years ago, due to a long distance relationship I had with a guy from Wales. @jakegraham5640
@jakegraham5640 Жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you for the kind comment. Yes I'm sure you would be able to do it if you are fairly fit. The most important thing is being able to navigate as there are a number of trackless sections. So being competent with a map and compass is important. The great thing is you can adapt the route if you feel like some of the more challenging parts are too much. There are lots of places to stay on route too ( apart from the middle section). We did around 12-14miles a day. If you want any more info then just ask. Have an amazing time if you make it out there. Thanks, Jake

Hey, thanks so much for watching the video and glad you liked it. Its a fairly well trodden route. Generally you could find spots easily higher up, . Here you can find amazing spots but you are more exposed to the elements. In the more populated valleys it was a little more challenging ( if we camp, we do it discretely and respectfully so wouldn't just camp anywhere), so we did use campsites a little more than normal. It's an incredible trail and I'm sure you will love it. Thanks, Jake

Hey Craig, thanks for watching the vid. I think we did around 20-25 km a day depending on the terrain. Up and walking by 7.30-8am and finding a camp spot around 4-5pm. Some days were more and some less, we just made sure we did distances that meant we would enjoy the experience as much as possible. We got food from supermarkets, small stores etc. so not much more than ordinary living. we didn't eat out much and we mainly drank water which is obviously free. Hope that all helps, if you want more info jsut get in touch. Good luck with your journey, it will be the best thing you ever did! Jake
