Hi, you are more knowledgeable about cams than any other person I have seen on You tube. I want to get your specific advice on something. I have a 2v low performance 73 mustang cleveland , and I want to build it with the 1970 4-V closed chambered heads I have on the shelf and have just been completely rebuilt minus valves and springs. I need it to be as streetable as possible and need good torque in the low rpm range. Also want to be able to use 92 octane fuel.. I dont want to change to any other head, I want to make these heads work. What is your advice as far as cam specs, cam timing, pistons, etc? Also any other viewer who can help me with your wisdom would be awesome. Thank you much all!

In my area, the 305 is the only common cheap classic SBC you can find these days. Sometimes you can even get them for free. It's often cheaper to get a running LS than a classic SBC here. My issue with the 305 is the quality changes drastically over the years. Some are very decent like the "Vortec" 305s, which weren't actually true Vortecs, to horrible like some of the late carb, early TBI stuff that had cranks and internals that were extremely weak.

What you didn’t mention is that there are two key way slots in the reluctor wheel and it can go back on in two different positions. Need to mark the key way slot on the reluctor wheel that goes over the key way before taking it off.

I’ve had a set of built 882s for 20 years after a cam wiped and ruined the motor. 6 months ago I decided to do a cam swap and use these heads, after taking them to the machine shop and having them clean, replace springs (z28 springs) and a valve job. I torqued the heads and started getting my pushrod length in order, come to find out I would need a 8.200 pushrod to even come close to clearing the screw-in stud. I had to take everything back apart and took them to another machine shop and they say they can take off .80 more. That will get me close but with preload it’s going to be close to bottoming out on the stud again. I’ve watched all your videos over the years and you, and everyone else speaks briefly on the topic. Am I missing something? Have you ran into this before? I need help.

7:30 this is the part I've never understood why it happened this way. It was just always, this head likes small cams and produces torque sooner... And this head likes bigger cams and produces HP at higher RPMs. But why? Why does having a larger cam cause this? And you explained it well. Saturation. The port can't flow more air so now it's reverbing back out the intake.

Help me if I missed something, but I think Bill Jenkins typically targeted a dynamic compression around 8.1 to 1 on a pump gas build. Something along the lines of... stay out of the 7's, and don't go past 8.3 to have some fun while not having to reach for racing fuel.

How's it idle and is there enough vacuum to run power brakes?

11:1 seems very sporty to me for 93 octane. Even using aluminum heads, I would not run over 10.3 to 10.5 myself.

Lots of 350 out there like mine with factory stock 64cc 193 heads.you also said before TBI heads are junk, then why did we flow bench garage ported 193 swirlport and almost matched the vortec heads in flow.I know of more than a few that have gotten good power out of 193 heads, yes i know there' not worth the time, well if you know how to work heads and have time, why not.

If you are going to build a 351M, you might as well build a 400M. 4in bore 4in stoke. TMeyer specializes in this engine and got with keith black to make a flat top piston 9.75:1 comp for these. Big block power in a smaller package

Pontiac changed to a less expensive to produce crankshaft in the 301 and 265 v8's, and putting boost to the 301 was not wise. I worked at a Pontiac dealership at that time and those engines literally exploded so badly when they failed everything broke. the cheapest least durable Pontiac v8 ever made. I also saw the Oldsmobile 350 diesel engines getting replaced under warranty regularly too. Just a lousy way to finish out Pontiac v8 production all that made them good to great was cheapened because of corporate accounting .

Vortec is the build te 5:10 am and engineers at gm not a particular engin or engine parts but now it's used as a name of engine cause the plastic on the air cleaner. He is right it was a trade mark that came out along time ago to say the build team wanted to create a vortex flow in the cylinder

The big block vortec heads are a pretty darn good compromise, good torque and horsepower balance for a low price. Abot 75 horsepower more than peanut ports with no changes.

The Poncho V8 is a bit like a mid sized small block Chevy. In stock form it has flaws that were never resolved from the factory. Even still it can perform strong within those limits and it's not hard to correct the issues. It's never going to be as robust as a BBC for making peak power. It lack the big bore and deep breathing heads for that. The truth is the BBC, 385+, and Hemi could have all made way more power than they did back in the day. Oh they didn't know that but it was within their reach.

I can't stand when supposed knowledgeable people talk about designed to make torque, when referring to lower rpm...torque is all any engine makes 100cc to top fuel....Hp is a calculated number but torque is the only thing that and engine makes or is measured by a dyno....why is this so hard to explain
