Do you know any good digital back for the Mamiya RB 67?

When luxury (or at least looking as such or at least very stylish) p&s cameras became all the rage and prices for a T2 jumped , I thought okay I’ll join a trend for once in my life (nvm the 80s Rubik’s Cube craze during my childhood). Let’s look at the Yashica T4. How much?!? People jumped on that too! Okay okay it’s the “T*” yeah yeah Oh, I know! Back in the 90s a friend had an Olympus Infinity Stylus Epic. That was a sweet lil’ thing and he took great snaps with it (vs lugging his Konica Autoreflex 😱). Besides, that LOMO thing had everyone distracted and it cost more than the Epic and the Epic was objectively a much better camera. Okay 20 years later here I am looking and HOW MUCH does it cost?!? Et tu, Brute?

I feel … icky .. like something improper is happening. Sliding that clamshell cover and revealing the lens. Peeping in the battery chamber. At least we didn’t see the back opened up! 🤣

Top and bottom is magnesium , not plastic . But if eberybody says it’s plastic, I guess the next Pentax will be completely made of plastic.

It doesn’t matter witch one for myself I have fd and FDN lenses if had had to be really picky I would use the FDN’s over the FD for the lightness but that’s it and you get a extra f stop at f22 with the FDN

High ISO films don’t struggle in bright light. They can take it just fine. My girlfriend shot a roll of TMax P3200, developed at 3200 because of the DX code in her Canon Prima 5 and it came out great. Even shots in direkt sunlight and in snowy daylight were fine. The camera has a max shutter speed of 1/250th at f22, so technically it can only expose up to ISO 400 film correctly at sunny 16. But because even super fast B&W negative films have a decent amount of dynamic range it wasn’t a problem at all! I guess you couldn’t shoot any high speed slide film like Ektachrome P1600 in it, but they don’t make that anymore anyway.
@Kamerastore10 күн бұрын
That´s amazing! I have personally not shot higher than iso800 film in sunny days. Not sure why though. Maybe the iso number limits my decision making for some reason. Will definitely give it a go! Thank you. -Tuomas

I love this since this is very sound advice but I took a completely different route. My first camera other than my phone was an Ikonta 6x6 folder from '49. My camera collector granpa gave it to me as a starting camera and honestly it was so much fun since I have about equal interest in photography but also camera mechanics. I know have bit of a collection going on (mostly weird stuff that I like, for example some 127 TLRs), aquired my personal dream camera (RB67) but I've never owned a single electronic camera. Just some selenium cell auto exposures. Autofocus is like dark magic to me, I sometimes feel like a caveman.

I realise this is a 3 year old video but I think the relevance of what is most poppular on these lists is probably more indicative of the pop culture of people flocking to shooting film. Very capable cameras like the Nikon F5, Canon EOS 1V, or the Minolta A9 are very likey waaaaay more camera than this market place would have any clue what to do with. Many of these shooters are coming from shooting with their phones, and most new Digital Cameras are just way beyond their ability to comprehend. There are of cpurse lots af capable people shooting film too, but the bulk of the young nubes are looking for the popular recommendations from KZbin, TikTok, and IG.
@Kamerastore12 күн бұрын
You must be not too far off. There definitely is correlation with pop-culture and film camera trends -as there is with everything else also. Just had a discussion with a friend of mine who were looking into getting a professional film camera- She had plenty of EF lenses etc so I recommended EOS 1V. Familiar, same lenses, great results, does not brake that easily but no. She went with Olympus MJU2. It is what it is and at the same time that is the beauty of things. We can do exactly what we want with our money. :D Thanks for watching. Tuomas

If you want something tiny with a flash and a supersharp lens, go for the Ricoh GR1, v especially. I love it, and mine even has the led working (for now 🤞🏻❤️). Really, the GRs, both digital and analog, are amazing, and the best pocket cameras ever.

My story would be way too long to go into here. Save to say, I started in the late 70’s at high school with a Pentax K1000, and moved up through the models to the Super A before jumping ship to Canon when AF arrived. Stuck with Canon ever since now with a EOS R5. I also shoot a Hasselblad X2D when I need to slow down as well as a Leica M9. Looking for a M10P. I have most of my film grails as I started buying them 10 years ago before prices went crazy. Perhaps the only one I miss trying is the Makina but prices are beyond comfortable for me. I still have my 500CM bought in the early 80’s, a RZ67, Pentax 67II, Mamiya 6 and 7, Pentax 645NII, Mamiya 645, a slew of Nikon F bodies (FE2, FM2, F3HP, F4, F5) and Leica R and M bodies (R8, R6.2, M6, M7 and MP) and a XPan II. Mostly cameras that were either ones that I wanted when I was young but couldn’t afford, or ones that have features I was curious about. My favourite film used to be Fuji Reala and the original Acros. Even the summary is long. LOL.
I bought a Nikon FM2 T with a f1.4 50mm in the summer and it kind of is my holy grail camera at the moment. its the best viewfinder i've used, light meter works and is easy to use, it shoots up to 4000th of a second all while being fully mechanical. i wanted something more reliable after my Canon AE-1 died and had replaced it with random cameras. I love this camera, and i hope it lasts a while.
@spearmintderg16 күн бұрын
At the moment I think my grail camera would be a fully kitted-out Pentax 6x7/67 with a bunch of lenses. The next camera I'm thinking of looking at would be a Yashica or Minolta TLR of some sort!

People don't choose to own and use a film camera in 2025 for practical or sensible reasons. It's an emotional choice. Choose the film camera that speaks to you.
@thomasa.24313 күн бұрын
True. Although unfortunately some „hype“ cameras are now getting very expensive (and too expensive) while there are plenty of cheaper options of same (or actually higher) quality.

RB67 😍 I’d be reasonably confident my Canon P or Canon 7 would still be going in 2040, also really confident in the Minolta SRT Super. EOS 3 probably because it was made more recently.

We be cool of them to list out all the places Kamerastore trusts to repair/sells serviced cameras.
@Kamerastore10 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, we don't really test other stores or third-party repair centers beyond the ones we outsource to. When we do outsource repairs, we clearly mark the product descriptions with who completed the repairs. For example, we send high end electronic point-and-shoots to Fototech in Poland and definitely trust their work! - Connor
@itwillonlyhurtonce10 күн бұрын
@@Kamerastore Right on. That makes sense. I wasn't trying to criticize. Most photographers don't know where to send cameras to get repaired or even where to start looking in the right direction. Hopefully not sending it to some other hobbyist who doesn't have the right eq. Whereas you guys are a trusted source, therefore recommendations from you guys or another trusted camera company/store would lead people to repair people that would be legit to train new younger humans to repair due to hopefully more business with hobbyists knowing who to send to.

Very interesting discussion. I went into film cameras because i love mechanical machines. The Plaubel Makina III R fascinated me from the moment i saw one(in a video). I started buying cheap mechanical cameras to learn to fix them, and in the last 3 years i was able to find 2 Makina IIIR‘s, one in a miserable condition, one in a good condition. I feel now confident fully restoring the Makina III R, having restored the one in miserable condition. As for Photography, i have a digital Fuji X-E1, which i adapt lenses to that i cleaned, hoping to find ones i like shooting with. I sell the lenses i don‘t like for cheap(half the price they get sold for on ebay) and sometimes make a small profit, most of the time the only profit is the things i learn while restoring.. I am hoping to get my hands on Vision 3 in 65mm, design a 65mm film back for the Makina III R, and shoot with it, because i like to make things complicated.. But also because i don‘t see a point in shooting expensive film if it is not „special“. I want to spend more time with photography itself, but as someone with a low salary, it is just very difficult to justify shooting film.. Especially with Kodak doing all sorts of stunts to milk the hype.. As a long term solution, that would make sense for me, i would probably shoot with glas plates with my makina IIIR. I will always be able to keep it running perfectly, and i will always be able to find the chemicals for making and developing my own emulsions.. As a holy grail, i have the Makina 67, which i was actually able to find for 1000€ last year. It needs a CLA, but the glass is good and i think i can CLA it myself. Another holy grail, probably the X-Pan, but i don‘t think i will ever be able to afford one.

20 years ago there were probably many millions of rolls of film sold now it's only a small fraction of that. If you shoot a 24 count 35mm roll film and developing is getting around a dollar per photo or more I think it's way too expensive already so what's going to happen when it's 2 or 3 times that much in a few years?

Very informative panel talk. I use both film and digital. Film is great for fine art photography work, whereas digital is more for immediate work. However, film photography has to market itself as a legitimate photographic medium just like digital. We see film promoted as a “hipster” medium used by younger photographers despite the fact there are older photographers who still use film. We need the photography industry to generate new film cameras that are affordable. We also need to make home processing inexpensive as well. Also, film needs to be marketed as an optional photo medium-even with advertising. Stop treating film as a “niche” medium.

I just got two low use cameras, a Mamiya RB76 and a Pentax 6x7 (mlu). I serviced my Pantacon Six by myself a few years ago, and got all the sutter speed pretty close, but the 2nd curtain is a bit sticky at 1/1000th. Now I'm conviced that I should have them serviced. I'll start looking for someone who can do it better than me. Thanks for the peptalk.

What about the battery check position on the on/off dial being spring loaded? Now it springs back to Off so that the battery doesn’t drain. What good is checking your battery only to kill it? And nowadays you might spend $ on one of those Wein cells. The only last so long on top of the cost, so why kill them early? The improved battery check was a nice touch from Canon.

Film photography will not die as long as there are well-healed advocates willing to pay ever-increasing prices to keep it alive. That includes the price of maintaining aging film equipment, which in turn requires a supply of people who have the skill to do what people are willing to pay for. Though I will always enjoy shooting digital, I've moved back into shooting film, primarily black and white and using SLRs in fully manual mode with a selenium cell light meter. I figure, if I move to film, I might as well eschew all the electronic controls as well. A primary reason people don't do camera preventive maintenance is the cost and lack of available services, especially regarding camera electronics. To that end, I bought several cameras that can function without a battery or when their circuitry has failed. Those cameras will be viable longer and will hold their value.
@rangersmith465220 күн бұрын
We need lots more people like Toni to study with masters while those masters are still able to share their knowledge and wisdom. As I move back into shooting 35mm, purely as a hobbyist, I'm not relying on electronics in any meaningful way. Even my SLRs that have electronics spend most of their time in full manual mode.

I’ve watched a couple of other videos and they left me baffled. But this video explains everything in a way that a complete beginner can understand. It’s a rare skill for an expert to be able to teach from a learners perspective, so I found this really helpful especially the explanation how each function works and their purpose. I was very daunted by my recent purchase of this camera. But after watching this video I feel that I can better understand how to use it
