Do you stretch the elastic to the desired length or is it relaxed at desired length?

What an encouraging talk, thank you. I have many 'things' I am working on, and one of them I do feel so much like a beginner I can't see how I'll ever learn. But God reminded me, that if I can learn to knit, then I can learn anything.

What an encouragement this is. I, too, am (and want to continue to be) a life long learner. Right out of college I took a sewing course and then began to make many of my clothes and down the road my daughters’ clothes. I’ve not sewn much in years, but this is the year I “perfect” making a tee shirt. Simple, I know, and easily purchased elsewhere, but I want to make them myself. Years ago when my daughters were learning to bake we agreed that we would not buy any baked goods and to this day we seldom purchase anything in that area. Homemade sourdough bagels are the best! For a long time I have reminded myself that if someone else can make it, I can learn to make it as well. I currently hand knit all but the finest knitwear for myself. I weave baby blankets for my grandchildren and tea towels for our homes (my children each have their own home at this point). And…with your inspiration, I want to get back to sewing my own clothes. Thank you for encouraging us!

Thank you for sharing your advice! I’ll be starting the Tumbleweed Quilt by Farm and Folk. My goal is naturally dye the fabric and hand quilt the entire piece! I’ve only done one small play quilt for my daughter so this will be quite a big undertaking 😂

I can’t even tell you how much I needed to hear this today. You described exactly what I was experiencing but had not realized it. I had 10 extra minutes today and I sewed the pockets I needed for a project I’ve been sitting on for a year now. Thank you so much. I’m going to save your video and come back to hear your words when I need them ❤

I love what you say here about growth. It's SO true. Growing up I was always discouraged to try new things because I "wasn't good at them". That kept me from learning so much. As an adult, I realized it's ok to be a beginner and look dumb for a while. I developed so many skills that I was paralyzingly fearful of failing at as a kid. Such an inspiring message. Thanks for putting this into a video to encourage me and others! Also, we are on the same wavelength! I've been trying so hard to consume less and my latest tactic is to *make* things vs buying them. <3

I just received your sewing journal book and it is so lovely and very practical for my needs. Thank you for such a beautiful book. I already have projects that I want to get started, I’m just waiting for my sewing machine to come from the repair shop. I have never made something so I’m looking forward to trying to create something for my family.

I know that I continuously come in to see your videos because they inspire me and make me feel relaxed, Courtney. Everything you write here is so true. In fact, we are all on a little "hero's journey" in sewing and I believe that many of us really need to express our creativity as part of our identity. My mood board is my sewing library. And while I'm on social media all the time, I love the texture of physical books and opening them and just seeing what others have sewn, loving the photos and illustrations, and feeling inspired. I love it. I'd be so interested to see a video where you could tell us about how you became a pattern maker, and share your inspiration and journey to do that. Robin here - always a fan! Thanks so much for this encouragement, Courtney - great tips!

Thank you so much for all that you said into this video. I started sewing in November without many fails but had a HUGE one yesterday that left me so defeated. I’m a perfectionist so every mistake gets to me. Now I have my seam ripped out to pull apart for the next 1 hour and try again. If I wasn’t doing this I would be consuming online. All this to say you have really inspired and spoke a lot of truth when it comes to creating. Very appreciative.

Courtney, I want to start by saying, thank you for making such amazing videos! You’re the one who inspired me to give a try at sewing when I was in the trenches of first-time motherhood. I always believed I wasn’t creative, passing off creative projects to others. But learning to sew has made me realize that my belief was a lie. That I am creative, even before learning to sew. I just needed to change my beliefs towards creativity. So again, thank you 💕 I haven’t been able to sew very much lately, but will hopefully start working on two quilts. One for my daughter and the other for baby on the way ☺️

I have very limited space so when I have several projects that I want to sew I will stop my knitting/crocheting/ and set my sewing machine out for a week or so and make those projects. Having a needle and thread in hand is so relaxing to me, and I know the more I work at various projects ( I still work on small ones) the better I will get and maybe one day attempt a bigger project! Creating really is a way of life! Sometimes I think I watch so many inspiring people and that is encouraging but at some point that has to be limited so I can get going and make whatever is on my mind to create!! Thanks for the encouraging video! BTW I am making those fall pillowcases that I never got around to this fall but the materials are here waiting! So now, I think I will be ahead for next fall! 🙂

Will you be making a full pattern with alterations for a betty blouse? Im not confident in being able to draft a collar and the modifications for making it a blouse instead of a dress.
