Hi, great video and very informative! I have my dad's SRT 101 here but the film advance lever seems to be stuck, it doesnt pull past about 20 degrees and the shutter release doesnt seem to depress. Any thoughts on this? Is there a reset button or similar? Also the timer lever seems to also get stuck at around the 30 degrees angle from vertical, which is maybe related to the same shutter release issue. Many thanks, Jag

I own both of these cameras (in my collection) and both are fantastic with different qualities rather than pros and cons. Both have also been serviced will probably now out-live me! I used the Nikon FM for the duration of my camera course and learning, in the mid-80s, so was slightly bias towards the FM. However, the OM-1 (n), is a an iconic thing of beauty, so compact and light, with a very bright viewfinder, and when going out to shoot digital, it is so handy to include in the bag to shoot film alongside digital.

Hi! I bought this camera in an antique shop in Austria this summer. It was already an old film inside it, so I tried to snap a few pictures with the film that was left. I watched several tutorials 11:57 , but my camera doesn’t have the green LED in the viewfinder. I thought it was the battery, so I ordered some new ones and got some help from a photo shop in Oslo. Now that I got the new batteries the green LEDs still doesn’t show up in the viewfinder🙃 is there anything I can do? Is the camera broken? Or what should I do?😅 Hope you got some tips!

The first Kodachrome II slides I ever sold were taken on the 300. One was a close up of Toi Toi reeds in the rain, hand-held at 1/30, resting on the car window frame. The others were closeups of mud pools, geysers, etc, for a Rotorua tourist brochure. I recently bought the exact same model from KEH to use on my Z8. I wanted to come see the follow-up video on the D700 vs Z8 because of the systematic approach you took (and many others ignore in their videos). Great job. This said, I do have a few things I thought you might find interesting to compare in another video or just take as personal knowledge. Let me get some disclaimers out of the way: I'm an amateur photographer for several years. 2. I bought a used copy of the D700 about 4 years ago, and own the Z9 (shoot mainly sports, action, wildlife). So I'm familiar with both sensors to add my own thoughts. I'm going to share a few graphs with you that will point out comparing the cameras at ISO 400 and 800 for "noise" picked the best locations for the D700, and perhaps the worst location for the Z8 (ISO 500 would have been far better for the Z8). As you'll see from the following graphs 2 things are going on. With the more recent technology (Z8), there has been a marked reduction at all ISOs in front-end read noise. www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/RN_e.htm#Nikon%20D700_14,Nikon%20Z%208_14 I'm not an engineer, but I would venture to guess a lot of this stems from improving signal (i.e. remove anti-aliasing filter, change the sensor to back-side illuminated), and reducing read noise (i.e. placement of the dual gain amplification and ADC "on-site" in the pixel). Perhaps this helps explain why a recent 45 MP camera with approx. half the pixel area can rival the low light performance of the D700. As you can see in the following graphs, not only was there a reduction in overall read noise, but there is addition of dual gain sensor also helps. This will also demonstrate, again, why ISO 400 was a good choice for the D700, but terrible location for the Z8 (ISO 100 or 500 would have been far better, but in between, the Z8 has greater noise at all locations that at those two locations. Unfortunately, this makes comparing the two cameras at ISO 400 or 500 a bit more problematic. Also note the gain in shadow recover and improvement in photographic dynamic range of the Z8 at ISO 500 over ISOs over ISOs between 126 and 480. You can see that the Z8 is ISO invariant above each of the base ISOs (64/500). The D700 is more stair step, and really become ISO invariant till ISO 800. www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/RN_ADU.htm#Nikon%20D700_14,Nikon%20Z%208_14 www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR_Shadow.htm#Nikon%20D700,Nikon%20Z%208 . ttps://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Nikon%20D700,Nikon%20Z%208. If you create another video comparing these two cameras, an advantage of the older, lower MP D700 is that you can use much older glass of lower resolution and which have screw drive motors. The main issue I have with the D700, is the AF accuracy if I use lenses wide open with large apertures. This is secondary to the both the limited AF points and limited AF accuracy. I don't have this issue on the Z9. For many, there are many reasons to romanticize about the D700. Perhaps it is the monochromatic noise or the color science. Why does your Son love it?

@@dance2jam Very interesting information. As far as focusing, the Z8 is clearly better and in my experience Z lenses dont require any focus adjustment. My son likes the D700 for its low iso noise, build quality and color. Thanks for watching and your comments.

@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 I'll look forward to your future videos. I'm assuming you were referring to the appearance of the noise at low ISO, since ISO doesn't have noise, but simply amplifies it. ;-) Have a great week.

I'm going to make this brief (especially because you were organized) - and I just finished ragging on a video on a similar topic that performed all its testing uncontrolled. Appreciate that you took care to mention all the controls to make the shooting equivalent. My head doesn't hurt anymore. This said, when making this type of video could you print the images and see if the noise is as visible in the printed output at the same sizes? Gracias!

@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 Appreciate your videos. The only reason I suggested printing is because many times the noise visible on the computer screen isn't appreciated in the print. I don't want to make you send photos off! LOL. I need a good printer myself, but I do have access to excellent printers at the Houston Center for Photography - and I need to print more.

Great video. Thank you! I inherited my Moms EM that my dad and I bought her in 1980. I just bought a Nikon Z50 and I am wondering if the F mount converter for the Z series will except EM lens. She had a Macro lens for her EM that I would like to try on my Z50 but I have read where you can damage the F mount converter with certain lenses. Thank you!
