Can I get some information on an Indian graduate wanting to move to Korea as an English teacher? I heard they only prefer people who have their first language as English (selected 7 countries)
@mikidough3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding you, but are you a resident of one of their preferred countries? If so, if you’re fluent in English, you should be fine. English was not my first language but since I was in high school and college in the US, I didn’t have an issue. I don’t know about the process if you’re living in another country though. Sorry!

I have so many questions about orientation actually... why are you in a hotel first and then a dorm room? Did epik pair you with a roomate or did you pick your own? Also did you have to pay for the hotel or anything?
@mikidough3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I stayed in a hotel bc the recruiting company that I worked with recommended that we go a day before orientation actually started. It was helpful to debrief before all the chaos! I booked my plane ticket and room through them so I’m guessing there was a fee, although in the grand scheme of things, we got reimbursed for the plane ticket so I didn’t really care. The dorm room was for the actual orientation time because you stay at a school/university for the space. I honestly don’t know how everyone’s roommates gets chosen, but for us, we were paired with whoever was in front or behind us. I had a couple in back of me so I was paired with the girl behind them. We’re still friends to this day!! 🥰 I didn’t have to pay for anything for orientation besides extra snacks and stuff that I went out on my own to get. They provide you with all meals and housing during those days. I think I answered everything lol. Sorry this was also a while ago so I’m trying my best to remember everything!

Carly Reeves banks are tricky. You have to set up a Korean bank account and make sure it’s connected to your American bank account in order to be able to transfer money. I used KEB Hana Easy One to transfer money. Just have a coworker or someone who can translate help you because it can get a little confusing at the beginning! :) but once it’s set up, you’re good to go.

@mikidough5 жыл бұрын
tmiiensato hello! I took the TEFL course through International TEFL Academy. I understand your confusion since there’s so many companies! ITA was super expensive when I signed up, and it’s one of the pricier ones, if I’m being honest. When I got to orientation, I heard a lot of people saying they went through courses that were $29!! That just seemed really sketchy to me, but we all ended up in the same place so I can’t say that didn’t work out for them. I can’t say I completely recommend ITA, I would say just find one that has a decent amount of reviews and meets the requirements that you’re looking for ie. number of hours, in class time, etc. Hope it works out for you :)

@@mikidough Seems as though you have a boyfriend; don't know his opinion on the matter. I've been looking to move to Asia, but it seems like South Korean women are totally willing to go under the knife to get surgery on their eyes. The stereotypical Caucasian male likely sees beauty in a large portion of South Korean women without any changes; the beauty standards are unreal. I would certainly do a cold approach on you with no makeup, no doubt, but certainly have apprehensions with the make up, even if I were to be rejected either way. It's kind of a sad situation really. Most men in their 20's are in cyber cafe's in one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Same with Japan, even with a sinking population. It seems like the East is one of the few areas on this planet that is still conservative in culture. I'm not for the patriarchy, it just seems people value relationships more in the East, yet suicide rates among the highest in Korea. As a U.S. citizen, it's just sad, and don't know what to make of it.

It’s so nice to see that you care about the new teacher’s wellbeing! I don’t understand how some coteachers aren’t expected to be somewhat knowledgeable in English? Does that mean the Epik teacher will take over most of the lessons rather than coteach with the native teacher?

Gemhei yeah. From what I understand, no one really wants to be the coteacher. The role is sometimes assigned to new teachers. I didn’t really have coteachers so yes, most times I had to come up with my own stuff.
