Where as this is just a little bit of pomp and tradition, it is also outwardly expressing a bit of a contradiction. The Pope is the Servant of the Servants of God, and this type of worldly pomp contradicts that reality.

Throughout this entire series, the young pope really needed a punch in the mouth. He was so totally in love with himself and walked around with a "Who the hell are you?" attitude. It was just too much.

Peter was not the first Pope and no human being, no matter the pomp and circumstance, can ever be all powerful or hold the fate of my immortal soul in his hands. He can never usurp the position, power and authority of Almighty God no matter the dogma, tradition, or ceremony. Period.

As a practicing catholic I agree. I get that other people think that it's pompous and unnecessary which I can understand their argument, but to me it makes sense. I think we should have the most beautiful churches, sculptures, and artworks because why not? Putting beauty and art in the service of representing our faith, to me at least, is not vanity.

Christ entered Jerusalem on a donkey, wearing the clothes of a wanderer....2000 years later his representative enters a chapel clothed in extravagant robes carried on a palanquin with attendants like the Pharaohs of old. Whats wrong with this picture?

Nothing, the pope is the vicar of christ on earth, a representative of our lord. Had christ had access to the level of wealth that the modern church does, he to would have dressed this way.
