Weren't the imperaror romanus the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire and not the Popes?
@andrewmckenzie2924 жыл бұрын
@@hectordanielsanchezcobo7713 Pretty sure it was a Pope that appointed the first Holy Roman Emperor and they continued to be crowned in Rome by the Pope until the early 16th century. By this time the Western Roman Empire was long gone and the Eastern Church had broken away into the Orthodox Churches and Byzantine Empire. Most likely this was done as a way to counter-balance the Eastern churches by having a Emperor in the west as well. Once the WRE was gone the Pope most likely filled the void as the central political figure in the western world as well the central spiritual figure (a lot of power indeed). This may also be the origin of their claim to be over HR Emperors and secular Kings as they are senior by virtue of inheriting the power of the Roman Emperors which they partially abdicated to the HRE (too much work being both Emperor and Pope probably).
@hectordanielsanchezcobo77134 жыл бұрын
@@andrewmckenzie292 yes that's exactly what happened, for the most part. Oh but when St. Leo III crowned Blessed Charles the Great (whose feast is today btw) the eastern churches were still in full communion with Rome, the devastated western Europe needed an emperor if they wanted to restore order, the Popes were being attacked by the barbars and Bl. Charles the Great's father, Pepin the short, had to help the Pope with the invasions, later Bl. Charles the Great did too and that prompted his coronation as emperor. Technically the Holy Roman Empire did not exist until the crowning of Otto I in 962 (at that time the eastern churches were still in communion), but Bl. Charles the Great was already crowned Imperator Romanus in 800
@andrewmckenzie2924 жыл бұрын
@@hectordanielsanchezcobo7713 Yes proof that history (or perhaps God) has a way of working things out, even if it must have surely seemed like it was End of Days at the time. I think it'd be fair to say western history as taught does not give enough credit to Bl. Charles the Great (I actually was not aware Charlemagne was beatified, Thank You for informing me of this). If not for his tenacity and leadership the western world as we know it would not exist I imagine.

Once the Vatican 2 experiment wears off, hopefully we’ll bring back the majesty of the our church. I think this was great 👍
@matev47862 жыл бұрын
@@adamleetucker3964 it’s not an experiment, it was an ecumenical council, universally law binding. To undo it would be next to impossible. Popes don’t like reversing laws set by previous popes & to reverse the rulings of an ecumenical council could call into question the stability of all previous council rulings (21 recognised by the Church of Rome). Also papal coronation was not abolished due to Vatican II (which occurred 1962-65), it was practised up until Paul vi who’s papacy began in 63, mid Vatican II & he still had a coronation. His successor John Paul i opted not to have a coronation & that tradition has stuck with Pope JP2, B16 & F, although any future pope can reintroduce a coronation, there’s no rulings against it.
@matev4786 Жыл бұрын
@@pjm001 no it is an ecumenical council..the official title is “second ecumenical council of the Vatican” translated from Latin to English. It also did defined new doctrine, not based on canonical scripture, but on sacred tradition. They literally revised & rewrote the whole canon law of the church, restructured the order of the mass, dissembled church hierarchy, allowed democratic & religious liberty & a whole lot more. We are now to view “break aways” from the church as “separated brethren’s” not as “heretics”..for example. It was a controversial council for sure, but so has every council in the past.
@henrylansing9734 Жыл бұрын
@@matev4786 The "experiment" of Vatican II refers to the whole new attitude that was implemented. No one is disputing the Ecumenical nature of the Council, just the attitude towards the non-Catholic world that is being tried (and failing miserably).

Yes, Kings have crowns and thrones. Pope is King. Ergo Pope has crown and throne. Some of this is mockery also, so take it with a pinch of salt. THE ONLY REASONS any reverence is given to the Pope is because of whose steward/vicar he is: the Resurrected Christ. He bears the keys to the Kingdom of God and the authority to bind and loose therewith. Would I show reverence to Pope Francis? Yes. Do I agree with how he is promoting heresies? Obviously not. But I would still show him reverence because of what Christ made him. Protestants think that we honor the Pope for being a great guy, instead of the office he holds. They also think reverence to Kings is 'idolatry.' This ignores the above reason for the reverence in the first place: the glory of God. For example, to dishonor Jesus' mother would be an offense to Christ. To honor her would not be, but would make Him happy. It wouldn't be worship of Mary to say at the wedding at Cana 'thank you for getting us some wine!' because she played a part in procuring it. It's like St. Paul says, 'honor where honor is due.'

@rdc20212 жыл бұрын
I asume you are talking about Pope Francis and I would like to remind you Humility is not weakness. On the contrary he is showing his strength of will and Love for God is so Strong that he has not fallen to temptation of living a lavish lifestyle. Most people if they were given the right to live in a mansion for free would take the offer and only a few would resist. Now I am not saying that our other Popes who have lived in the Papal palace are bad or weak. But Pope Francis shows that particular strength and really embodies the Fransiscan lifestyle of humility that it deserves recognition and respect like for example not calling him weak.

Inherited from Roman and Byzantine Emperors. Popes took the title "Pontifex Maximus" from the Western Emperors, while the Eastern Emperors in Constantinople kept that title. So in the west they had to impress the barbarian kings, while in the east it reinforced the position as God's Anointed Representative. The ostrich plume fans date all the way back to the pharaohs of Egypt
@andrewmckenzie2924 жыл бұрын
Yes very grand indeed. After thorough study I have concluded that its probably for the best the Popes no longer employ it as their descend their authority from St. Peter rather than God himself. As I said in another comment this probably was a relic from their time as interim Emperors when the Western Roman Empire collapsed and they had to fill the void of leadership. On the other hand there certainly should be a leadership figure like this who can be a leader of ALL people, both noble and common. He would lead the common people like a noble but also lead the nobles (thus act as a check on their power) by being above them too. This device would be a good symbol of that, with the Cardinals in this instance playing the nobles.

Throughout this entire series, the young pope really needed a punch in the mouth. He was so totally in love with himself and walked around with a "Who the hell are you?" attitude. It was just too much.

@TheEnd Have you ever heard of history books? Please, check the stats of the Inquisition. And btw, the Church has never ask money with the sacrament of penitence, what you said is a slander. An indulgence is an optional penitential practice.

@TheEnd You speak as though Protestants were angels, lol. Almost most religions have been involved in utter atrocities. Protestants aren't an exception. Slave trade, native American extermination, wars of religion were awful situations in which protestant nations were protagonists (along with their Catholic rivals).
@lorenzoc.b.98094 жыл бұрын
@TheEnd I don't know who teach such lies, but please, think for yourself, make your research beyond your pastor sermons.

@TheEnd Whether you like it or not, protestants were quite similar to Catholics in atrocities and superstition, notably during the XVI and XVII centuries. Study the Thirty Years War for example, the infamous Salem's trials, etc. I don't defend the Catholic Church (itself, a corrupted vestige of Constantine's Church). I just pinpoint those uncomfortable details you religious people refuse to acknowledge.
@lorenzoc.b.98094 жыл бұрын
@TheEnd Stop blaspheming against the Church, you pagan! It is the Mother that Our Lord gave to humanity. She has prevailed along two millenia and it will stand here until the End of the World, not like the other nationalist and false churches rooted in the world, so they can't remain united for a single century.

By looking at some of the comments, I would say that many need to realize that this pope is fictional. There is no official Pope Pius XIII. Know the difference between fact and fiction.

fiveminuteswithjim Right, this is TV fiction, but the way Roman popes behaved for many centuries was EXACTLY THIS ,and far worse.
@deedeebrando67496 жыл бұрын
fiveminuteswithjim worse than that but I am glad that they were not able to destroy the Church. Until now there are still people inside the church who want to destroy It , priests who were involved in sex scandals but as Christ said even the gates of hades will not prevail against It. He will with us until the end of time. Thank You Lord.

Austin McMahon I know this is super late but I thought I would mention that yes Our Lord did wash His disciples feet, and because of this the pope actually washes the feet of catholic faithful every year on Holy Thursday. He is also known as the “Servant of the Servants of God.” It is the office of Pope which receives honour and respect not the person holding the office.
