Let me see how fast I can summon the tang police. If it's reef safe and tiny, any fish is fine. I have a 12 gallon 3 feet long tank. I have a tiny blue tang, clownfish, yellow corisse wrasse and a royal Gramma. Of course I know the tang will outgrow the tank. I already have a home for him with a friend's 120 once he gets larger. Also most fish stores will let you trade fish in. The most important thing new reef keepers should do, even for nano tanks, is quarantine their fish in copper for a month. You'll look into this the first time you wake up to ich or velvet.
@MACNTOSFAM12 сағат бұрын
you’re lucky to have an lfs that will let you trade fish. i don’t, and so do many others. so taking the time to research a fish for the system is more of a larger decision for us. and i’ve had occassions when i thought my friend could take in my overgrowing tang, just to find out he already received another one from another local reefer. namely a powder blue
@cbarber53668 сағат бұрын

@glub907522 күн бұрын
I don't think that chromis should be on this list for schooling fish - especially blue green chromis. They stay toghether in the wild due to strength in numbers but in captivity there is no danger so there is no reason for them to do this. Also unlike other schooling fish, they form a hierarchy through aggression and will always pick off the smallest one until there is just one left. You could possibly have success if they were fed almost constantly (1-2x an hour) but that just isn't sustainable (tank pollution, food cost, labour). They are also a low cost and common fish, so often are treated poorly in terms of collection as well as very commonly having incurable Uronema disease
@glub907522 күн бұрын
same with pterapogon/bangaii cardinals - but you can keep sphaeramia, Zoramia and ostorohincus cardinals together successfully as they form a hierarchy without aggression,

Any mad recommendations for E-Max 260 AIO? Also, what program do you use for your lights?
@WaterLoggedLifeАй бұрын
What are you looking for along the line of recommendations? For lights, I have actually been using a schedule recommended by a local store, the blue and white are around 60% and I run them for about 7 -8hrs. I'd love to find a program/schedule that allows me to mimic natural light from the Indo pacific, but I haven't found anything yet.

@WaterLoggedLife Hilary i think you should have considered making a before/after video that showcases the change. It might have taken a little longer to produce it, but there are already a lot of videos out there on physical removal of GHA. Showing parameters and how you implemented techniques to address it/prevent it moving forward backed up by future tests and success would be helpful Also i think you missed a massive consideration - resource competition, such as a refugium or algae scrubber. I think this belongs in any discussion for long term considerations Not trying to nitpick, just something to consider, im sure as a content creator you have to weigh a lot of things. Thanks for keeping the channel alive, its nice to see new content being made Oh and uhhh, not sure if i should say this because its Internet creepy cringey but your hair looks fantastic like that 😅 just figured you would want to know

You make some excellent points. I do love a good before and after to show case the change and will keep that in mind for the future. It probably would have been good to include a scrubber or a refugium as a part of the conversation as they can be helpful. Thanks for the compliment

Hello Hillary! Your tank looks awesome. My new 5ft long, 180 gallons fowlr tank has been cycled with lights off. No issues till now. Added a Blue Gudgeon about 5 days ago from my older nano tank and it has been doing great. I added a gyre which pushes about 4000 gallons per hour and now I'm thinking about removing the other wavemakers as the gyre is very effective and good. I'll be moving my Ornate Leopard Wrasse pair from my nano tank to this one today. *Fingers Crossed*

With regard to UV, it is true that all bacteria both harmful and beneficial in the water column will be killed as they pass through the sterilizer but the majority of your tank's beneficial bacteria is on the surface of your rock work sand etc and will not see the UV. Some other near essential items are a set of tongs capable reaching the bottom of your tank and a hand net(s) of a size appropriate for your tank.
@WaterLoggedLife2 ай бұрын

Hello Hillary! I love how informative your videos are. I was wondering if there are any fish/inverts that are not reef safe but are better at their utility than their reef safe counterparts. I have a 5x2.5x2 ft., 180 gallon fowlr tank and the only lists I see online are for reef safe or reef safe with caution fish/inverts.

Ooo! That is an interesting question! Off the top of my head, I can say the Red/White/ Spotted Hermit Crab (Dardanus megistos) . I have one in my fowlr tank who is AMAZING at algae control. I've heard some people say that emerald crabs are one that aren't reef safe, though I've never had issues with them. I will keep thinking on the fish as none are immediately coming to mind

Good video and a good advice regarding researching invertebrate and fish compatibility. For example, as you point out is the Cardinal fish a great beginner fish and generally is safe with smaller shrimp such as peppermint shrimp but shrimp molt or shed their outer shell periodically and that is when shrimp and crabs are vulnerable to nocturnal hunters such as the cardinal fish.
