Boxing has become much less important to our culture than it was in the 20th century, when the heavyweight champion may as well have been the king of the world. Boxing was obviously popular before Howard Cosell, but during his career it reached its highest level. With his close association in the public mind with Ali, it does seem like Cosell elevated the entire sport. There was only one boxing champion after Ali, Mike Tyson, who enjoyed anything like the cultural status of Ali. After Cosell walked away from boxing, the world did too. His departure was obviously not the only reason for that cultural shift, but did it play a part in it?

At the end, during the interview (around 2:52:00), the guy says "I don't think it's the greatest upset of all time". I'd like to know what is. The best hockey team in the world got beat by guys still in, or coming out of, college. They had players as old as 35, while the average age of the U.S. team was 22. Many Soviet players had played together for over a decade. That team routinely beat NHL teams, and the NHL all-star team. They had won 4 straight gold medals. The Soviets outshot them 39 - 16 in this game and yet they still lost. Again I ask....what's a better upset?

The comments made by the always mentally inferior Gifford about Howard made me lose all respect for him as a man. He was envious of Cosell in many ways, but the fact that Cosell never played the game yet knew infinitely more than the pretty boy jock drove the dementia addled ex player to develop a complex of inferiority that he took with him to his grave.

Like most Americans who watched Monday Night Football, I hated the obnoxious cartoon character named Howeird Cosell - especially his giant nose with its gross nose hairs sticking out like mulberry bushes. YUCK!

Chuck knew and knows his hockey and he was spot on that the market was taking on a lot quickly. In 1993, you had one of the big four. By 1998, you had all four...that was a lot to add to the market in a short period of time.

Miracle ? Stop already this American College Kids versus the Russians comparison - The 1980 U.S.A. Men's Olympic Team were only 3 years younger then the Russians not 10 or 15 years younger - and played against guys around the same age - Our U.S.A players won all games but on which was a tie ! Are all those games also " Miracles " - Give our 1980 U.S.A Men's hockey team credit already -They had talent - they had speed/agility - they scored a lot of goals - To call it a so called " miracle " is in a way an insult to their talents !

Tks for posting the m9vie, loved the intensity, and a great game 9f h9ckey is a great game. The US🇺🇲 mastered it in 1980, they beat the godam POS soviets: that was glorious, and deserved the gold. No doubt. As a Canadian🇨🇦, where hockey's a religion, hats off to the Americans🇺🇲.

I still get tears in my eyes for the call on the 1976 LCS. In those days the Mets were THE team in New York. They had Tom Seaver, Yogi Berra, Jerry Grote, two pennants and a World Championship. The Yankees were wife swappers. When they beat the Red Sox and broke through for the pennant......Wow!

Yea but if you really want to grow the game wouldn’t you not want to gatekeep it? Where are the Canadian business tycoons? Why don’t the Canadian billionaires make a new Canadian league? I mean Canada hasn’t won a cup since 93 with Montreal. I get the reasonings back then but this reporter was a dick to some people because they weren’t as knowledgeable on trivial details of the game. People who are saying what’s happening now is how winner felt isn’t true. They saw it coming. We got our world flipped upside down in a week after being promised support until the land auction failed.

Howard Cosell was a sports institution. We loved him while watching MNF and waited to see the halftime highlights. His narration of such and his command of the English language was profound. The man changed sports broadcasting forever and he belongs in the Hall Of Fame! As for ABC creating a platform wherein Howard became the person people loved to hate, I guess CBS MUST’VE had that in mind hiring Dick Stockton & Tom Heinsohn. Two Boston announcers hired by a network to call a local teams games AND pull for them over the air while disregarding and disliking the Lakers.
