Moin, Heiko. I am working on my 84 R100RS. The left cylinder is ticking quite a bit, so I think I'll try the shims. Also, I have watched several valve adjustment videos and there are some discrepancies/opinions on proper valve clearance. The sticker on my dash states 0.1mm intake and 0.15mm exhaust. That is what I set them to. Some video contributors suggest 0.1mm intake and 0.2mm exhaust, and one member of an Airhead Facebook Group, suggested 0.2mm intake and 0.3mm exhaust, with the explanation that he had 6 airheads and many miles on them and never had a problem. Then I hear that "slappy valves are happy valves"...etc. Pretty confusing. What do you suggest? Thank you!
@HeikosGarageАй бұрын
@@damerowr on your 84 you should already have a plastic bushing and shims on your rocker shafts. You can use more shims to take up excessive play. Make sure the push rods are straight and they are not hitting anything in the tube. Check that the push rod tubes are straight. Over the year bmw changed the valve clearance for the airheads. If you have a factory sticker that states your valve clearance just go with that.
@damerowrАй бұрын
@@HeikosGarage Thank you! Yes. plastic bushings are installed, but I don't see any shims. I'll get some to add. Also, the push rods are not exactly in the center of the tubes, but I am not sure how t influence/change that.
@HeikosGarageАй бұрын
@@damerowr only add shims if you have axial play in your rockers. You can run your bike briefly with the valve cover removed. Put an oil catch pan or bucket under that cylinder while you are running it. Oil is going to spill a little. Running it without cover allows you to see the rockers move and maybe see your push rods move in and out. That way you can maybe identify the part that makes the noise. Check out this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2mylaOcn7Otoc0 Don't run the bike too long standing still, it can overheat.
