This podcast was awesome! Thanks, Alex and Scott, for the information. I have been adding 5g in every post shake I take after my workouts, This podcast makes me feel great that I have been doing this as I read about it but wasn't aware of all of this.

I've been supplementing with creatine for almost a year now. I definitely noticed bigger gains in the gym this year, max weight not so much bulk, and think that even if there is a small water weight penalty, I am happy to pay it. I am an XC Mtb racer.

This has been really helpful. I'm new to the carb loading game, and I've had a difficult time understanding the types and amount of carbs specific to carb loading. This brief chat has made it much simpler for me to understand, so thanks to all of you!

As someone who has FODMAP sensitivities, what gels would you recommend that are only glucose and/or maltodextrin based (i.e., no fructose)?

Big fan or the Maurten gels. Mainly because they aren't sticky like most gels. You can swallow the whole thing in two or three *bites* and they go down fast. This makes me much more likely to consume them in a race situation. I couldn't really nail down the flavor but yes, marshmallows!

I love the gel recommendations. I tend to use Clif products and feel like they are competitive with other big names but much cheaper. Their ingredients also appear to be more natural with some being organic. Any thoughts on Clif Shots and Bloks?
@alexlarsonnutrition
@alexlarsonnutrition 10 ай бұрын
I thought I had heard Clif was discontinuing their gels, but couldn’t confirm that for sure. The bloks, to me, are just tough to chew and take awhile to get down. I prefer Skratch or Honey Stinger chews as they aren’t as much of a jaw workout.

I have not tried Maurten yet but have heard great things . After listening to this as i am thinking that I way under fuel on the Century Rides. I do take a few Gu Roctane gels but usually grab a couple of banana sections and a pb&j that are provided. I do take Skratch Labs for fluids. Very informative ! Hopefully I can get this dialed in for 2025! Thank you Alex and ladies. Happy New Year!

Any tips on how to best manage carb intake while being type 1 diabetic and racing/ exercising?

This is all lies..... all of it... How U think muscle cells absorb sugar. With insulin..... that's the only way... Exercise decreases risk, but only because people who exercise eat less sugar usually. So many triathlete are diagnosed pre diabetic from eating those sugar shots.....
@genuineimpulse9134

The glucose is going directly to the muscles when exercising but the fructose is not. Fructose has to be processed through the liver.
@genuineimpulse9134
@genuineimpulse9134 Жыл бұрын
Well it depends. Keep consuming lots of sugars (glucose, fructose, lactose, galactose) and your body will keep compensating with insulin. Everything can seem fine for decades. Do it chronically and you'll have hyperinsulinemia. If you wish to understand if you are metabolically healthy get your fasting INSULIN tested. Your goal is a level of (2-8) and over 25 is diabetes. There's a huge space there between 8-25 where your body is producing more and more and more and more insulin to compensate. It's works great until it doesn't.

There are many factors that contribute to diabetes, it’s complex. Sugar itself does not cause diabetes.
@genuineimpulse9134
@genuineimpulse9134 10 ай бұрын
@@alexlarsonnutrition you are right. Sugar sitting on the shelf doesn’t cause diabetes. Eating it as a primary component of your diet bathes your vessels and organs in sugar. To protect your body produces more and more insulin to get more and more sugar into already saturated cells. Do that for years and that does cause diabetes. Sugar in a bag on the shelf is perfectly safe.

One thing that should be added, is, if you do consume sugar during or before your work out, you will not be losing any weight your body will use the glucose in your blood for the work out so there will be absolutely no fat burned

Great info. I really like the Mauten texture because I can basically take a packet in two *bites* and swallow. When I'm breathing hard I can still get these down and then they are done. No stickiness left over in my mouth. I tiny sip of water just before and they slip right down.

If I start putting on weight, I’ll start tracking my food and nutrition intake with the Myfitnesspal app. That is usually enough to narrow down where I’m over eating and make adjustments to bring my weight back into check.
