Well... I just installed a "Radar 195/65R16" car tire on my 2003 Goldwing. It was tight but got it in place without any prying tools. Looks good too. Also installed Eco beads for balancing.

This is basically the perfect video. Short and to the point. I've been considering going darkside on my chopper because I'm just too broke right now to buy a motorcycle tire and a car tire is like half of the price. I don't need any real cornering performance because I live in Florida and all of our roads are straight. I end up wearing out the middle of the tire with a ton of tread left over on the edges.

A motorcycles contact patch stays consistent and predictable. Also the equation for friction (traction) does not include surface area, so by running a car tire with a harder compound that's meant for a heavier vehicle you are lowering the only two variables used to calculate friction values. It's worse in every way possible.

Anyone that makes the oh so ridiculous claim that running a proper car tire on the back of certain motorcycles as being "worse in every way possible" has done nothing more than to prove how ignorant they are about darksiding.

What is your riding experience? And how "stiff" is a car tire? All depends on temperature, compound and tire pressure, not? Search the upload about car tire sidewall flex and you will understand it better. People who have no experience better ask questions, rater than see their assumptions as facts.

An FYI that no-one ever mentions, in the hope of preventing anyone from a mishap! Increased mileage means not removing rear wheel as often, means less inspections of belt/chain, bearings, brakes etc! After changing my last car tyre @30,000kms I found 1of 2 rear wheel bearings dangerously worn out! I now intend to remove the wheel 1/2 way through the life of the tyre purely for inspection & maintenance! Ride safe! Ric, Double dark on 2012 Roadking

Thanks for this explanations. Tire with symmetrical designs, I immediately looked for this type of tire, I find it super logical, we want to be sure of the same behavior in curves, left and right. I still have 2 questions... When we are at a standstill, does it hold its balance better? For maneuvers, is it easier or not?

Not sure if its been said before, but larger contact patch should also burn more gas. I have a 2000 Valkyrie and have been following this dark side too. The way I see it, it’s gas usage verses tire wear. Have also read that some tires raise the bike up when cornering (or at least it feels that way), something you get used to. I’m sure I will try it, but will also be tracking gas usage on regular ride roads. Not sure this will be a good test but I’ll see…

Great camera work. The Boss Hoss motorcycles used car tires for several years before a motorcycle tire was manufactured that was large enough. I never had any problems with it with 355 HP and 385 lb ft torque. I had more torque at 1500 rpm than any street bike makes at any rpm, and no slippage Yes, we also used car rims, but we are at decent lean angles with 1000 lbs plus my fat ass pushing down on it. I think with a quality tire it will work fine.

I have several darkside videos on my BMW 1600GT. I ride hard in the mountains of Utah and you simply can't tell a difference above about 30 MPH. I've been a high performance driving instructor for BMW, Porsche, Ferrari and other groups for over 30 years, as well as being a licensed MSF RiderCoach. It really is a wonderfully simple solution to 3000 mile rear tire life, as the K1600 rips 160 HP and 129 lb ft of torque. Great camera angle btw! Might need to make another film in the spring, as I have 2 K1600s, one Darkside and one not. Follow along if you're interested! kzbin.info/www/bejne/nquanXeKncdsq7s

Here are the FNG questions: a) This is a rear tire solution, not a front and rear tire solution? b) Any insurance issues if there's an accident, could insurance claim be denied claiming because you weren't running a motorcycle tire vs car tire, and c) same question about bike a warranty, I still have about a year left on the my warranty, but hate to save $100 trying out a new tire set up and then have an issue and BMW claims it was due to running a car tire. I want to put this on my BMW r1250GSA next spring since most of my riding has been 1-4 hour daily trips for work, 3-4 days a week. Thanks for all the tips.

i think motorcycle tires are better engineered. and for myself, i would never buy tires from manufacturers who also make car tires i had experience with Metzeler and Dunlop, and i can say that Metzeler are way better tires than Dunlop (who also make car tires) Metzeler on the other hand has a more uniform wear on tires compared with Dunlop on Dunlop tires: rear tire wear faster than the front and middle than the sides, when Metzeler tires just wear uniformly.

What an awesome description of the pros and cons of running a darkside tire! After similar research of the "darkside", I went with the popular, at the time, Goodyear Triple Tread on my '07 VTX 1800T IN 2012 and it lasted till 2019 with 54,000 kms approx. Went back to Metzler 888's till this year...approx 10,500 kms. I am now trying the Hankook Kinergy GT darkside with an Excedra G701 for the front. Also trying dynabeads in both, 3oz for the rear and 1oz for front. Come to the darkside!!

I'm not sure why people talk about contact patch size. It has nothing to do with traction. What a larger patch size does is cause hydroplaning and that's all it does.

more contact on the road equals more traction......you obviously have no common sense. why do ya think dragsters and race cars have wide tires🤔
@RoadKing05FLHR
@RoadKing05FLHR 3 жыл бұрын
@BAMABIKER for proof look at a car tire vs a motorcycle tire. Boom! Your bike is not a dragster or a car. Racing motorcycle tires have a round profile. Car tires are made for cars. Also I doubt you even running $600 car tires so why campare those to the cheap tires you use? Kind of a bait and switch there. Nobody racing a motorcycle on a road track uses a car tire. It's not even allowed. Common sense is lacking on your end. Common sense should tell you to use scientific knowledge and not common sense. That's how common sense works.

I think with a little common sense your comment could have been avoided. It's literally people riding these "tractors" around who successfully use and enjoy darksiding. I have yet to see anyone darkside a sport bike. It works best with heavy bikes and I don't think the sport bike guys would even consider it nor is anyone saying they should. I used to think it was the Harley guys too stuck up to wave to the sporties but with comments like yours I see it may be the other way around.

Does your insurance and liability still apply when you’re using automobile tires on a motorcycle? Also, you are operating under the premise that a motorcycle doesn’t have a sufficient tire contact area, and therefore a variably oversized area is desirable. Why do you think the beads and sidewalls are so different between car tires and motorcycle tires?
