3 years on and we are now morally bankrupt country thanks to the gays getting married. Only kidding, we have an openly gay prime minister, no one ever mentions his sexuality, he is a politician like any other, like by some, loathe by some, but his sexuality is never brought into it. As it should be. Ireland feels great right now.

It was such an amazing feeling to live through that referendum, to witness history of a country standing together for some of our people. I feel privileged to have been part of it.
@1careycarey7 жыл бұрын
I remember this day I was 17 and hoping the vote was a Yes. The build up to the referendum was harsh as people that were in my school would shout vote no and say it is just completely wrong to be gay every time they saw me including one of my teachers who said it is not appropriate for 2 men to raise children that's why he was voting no. I was so overwhelmed the vote was a yes it really made every bad comment mean nothing anymore thanks to the people of Ireland 🍀🌈👬👭

Some armies are heroic and some armies are unheroic. The Irish army, with gay marriage in it, is unheroic. Also, some countries are worth fighting for and some countries are not worth fighting for. Ireland, with gay marriage allowed, is not worth fighting for.

Can I ask the people who voted Yes in the same sex marriage referendum and No on the Presidential Age referendum, why they did it? This Yes side argued that all discrimination is wrong. But as a 33 year old, I feel discriminated against based on my age. I thought all this was about "Equality"?
@NiamhSoady939 жыл бұрын
Joe Murphy I completely agree. If you don't want a president under the age of 35 then don't vote for them? but at least give them the right to run, after all we pay the same taxes and bills etc

***** Hi Niamh. I actually voted No in both amendments, because I believe in "just (fair) discrimination, i.e ; recognition and understanding of the difference between one thing and another. I was being sarcastic in order to highlight the inherent contradiction in the Yes side's campaign, which was based on the idea that all discrimination is wrong.

Now that is something very special, seeming to encapsulate and portray in a very beautiful way, all that I have been hearing about events in Dublin and Ireland last weekend! I'm thinking....from the sublime to the ridiculous! 1) The Sublime.....Mary Robinson's election as first female President of Ireland ........and all the scare mongering and "mud slinging" that went on in the build-up to her election...... "Pee" Flynn and his reference to "women being better more suited at home in the kitchen"..... and those snide comments about "abortions in the Phoenix Park" etc etc......and then, the feeling of relief and joy that Ireland had finally moved on from the power of right-wing , narrow-minded , fundamentalist bigots! And NO, NO, NO...... I'm not talking about ordinary decent CHRISTIAN "church-goers"....... because THEY were the one's that swung both that election...... and this referendum! 2) The "ridiculous and joyful"......the sheer unbridled sense of joy on Dublin Streets comparable to "Italia '90"! This clip is definitely "Reeling in the Years" material for the future! And yes, there are a few tears in my eyes and hairs standing on the back of my neck............. Did we "50 something" year olds ever imagine as teenagers that ..."there'd be days like this"?

Watching this video something struck me. The vote was never going to come out No. The joyous, colourful, vibrant scenes at Dublin Castle on Saturday demonstrated this. People were dancing, laughing and crying not only because they won the vote but because they finally felt the acceptance from a nation to display their true feelings in front of everyone. I've been in Dublin in the intervening days and there just seems to be an electric feeling of 'We did something to be proud of', its incredible. I am not someone to post things and I've been sceptical about putting this up but I've done this because I am bloody delighted for my sister and for the way Ireland represented itself over the last few days.

When those who voted yes and are straight and get much older and wiser. They will realize how foolish and stupid they were at that younger age. I thought much the same as they did at that age. But I know better now how stupid we really are in our youth. Their will be those who will regret the chose they made on that day because of their lack of experience.

This was much more about Ireland saying "we accept you" than it is about marriage.... How wonderful it must be for any minority to be told they are accepted and respected after so long feeling bullied. Proud to be irish.
@billymodo75557 жыл бұрын
The problem is... the bullied have become the bullies. Many churches like mine have fully supported the right for same sex coup[es to have their relationship legally recognized by 'The State' To this end most Christians have always supported the notion of a civil partnership. The LGBT community were happy with the introduction of the civil; partnerships bill and only a tiny minority of activists were pushing for so called 'Marriage Equality'. The difference is that Holy Matrimony is a lawful institution and 'Civil Partnership' is a 'Legal' institution. The push for Marriage equality is a poke in the eye to those many Christians like myself who worked so hard to lobby for civil partnerships. Marriage equality is not about being able to marry in a Mosque, a Gujarat, a Synagogue or any other religious temple. It is totally focused on same sex marriage in a Christian Church. This legislation forces the Christian Church to accept a form of sexual union which is so clearly forbidden by scripture but the rights of Christians to maintain their core traditional beliefs have been totally trashed. The rights of the minority have been promoted above the rights of the majority which is a shame because there's a surprising amount of common ground here.

@davidk70494 жыл бұрын
@@billymodo7555 Marriage has been along for far longer than Christianity and your beliefs do not hold a monopoly on other people's right to participate in a social institution. Ireland has legislated for CIVIL marriage; no churches, mosques or synagogues are being forced to perform same-sex marriages if they don't want to, nor should they. My parents are Catholics and they voted in favour of same-sex marriage, as did the majority of Ireland's Catholics. It's inappropriate for you, as an American, to tell us how to run our country when you don't understand the social, religious or political fabrics of our society.

The love from Ireland that day reached the corners of the earth. You've all achieved something incredibly special. Thank you <3
