I'm going to be honest, I consider myself a relatively tough Irishman, but even as a straight person it brings me to tears how proud I am of my country due to the vote. I usually never get this feeling but for once I am so terribly proud to be Irish

The support from straight people throughout the country has been incredibly overwhelming and it really shows the compassionate, fair nature of our people. It truly is a country we can all be proud of and it wouldn't have happened without people like you!

This was much more about Ireland saying "we accept you" than it is about marriage.... How wonderful it must be for any minority to be told they are accepted and respected after so long feeling bullied. Proud to be irish.

The problem is... the bullied have become the bullies. Many churches like mine have fully supported the right for same sex coup[es to have their relationship legally recognized by 'The State' To this end most Christians have always supported the notion of a civil partnership. The LGBT community were happy with the introduction of the civil; partnerships bill and only a tiny minority of activists were pushing for so called 'Marriage Equality'. The difference is that Holy Matrimony is a lawful institution and 'Civil Partnership' is a 'Legal' institution. The push for Marriage equality is a poke in the eye to those many Christians like myself who worked so hard to lobby for civil partnerships. Marriage equality is not about being able to marry in a Mosque, a Gujarat, a Synagogue or any other religious temple. It is totally focused on same sex marriage in a Christian Church. This legislation forces the Christian Church to accept a form of sexual union which is so clearly forbidden by scripture but the rights of Christians to maintain their core traditional beliefs have been totally trashed. The rights of the minority have been promoted above the rights of the majority which is a shame because there's a surprising amount of common ground here.

@@billymodo7555 Marriage has been along for far longer than Christianity and your beliefs do not hold a monopoly on other people's right to participate in a social institution. Ireland has legislated for CIVIL marriage; no churches, mosques or synagogues are being forced to perform same-sex marriages if they don't want to, nor should they. My parents are Catholics and they voted in favour of same-sex marriage, as did the majority of Ireland's Catholics. It's inappropriate for you, as an American, to tell us how to run our country when you don't understand the social, religious or political fabrics of our society.

Watching this video something struck me. The vote was never going to come out No. The joyous, colourful, vibrant scenes at Dublin Castle on Saturday demonstrated this. People were dancing, laughing and crying not only because they won the vote but because they finally felt the acceptance from a nation to display their true feelings in front of everyone. I've been in Dublin in the intervening days and there just seems to be an electric feeling of 'We did something to be proud of', its incredible. I am not someone to post things and I've been sceptical about putting this up but I've done this because I am bloody delighted for my sister and for the way Ireland represented itself over the last few days.

I remember this day I was 17 and hoping the vote was a Yes. The build up to the referendum was harsh as people that were in my school would shout vote no and say it is just completely wrong to be gay every time they saw me including one of my teachers who said it is not appropriate for 2 men to raise children that's why he was voting no. I was so overwhelmed the vote was a yes it really made every bad comment mean nothing anymore thanks to the people of Ireland 🍀🌈👬👭

Can I ask the people who voted Yes in the same sex marriage referendum and No on the Presidential Age referendum, why they did it? This Yes side argued that all discrimination is wrong. But as a 33 year old, I feel discriminated against based on my age. I thought all this was about "Equality"?
