Finally got around to watching Star Trek: Picard and in a scene in season 3 they use this Klaxon (no voice) for the life support failure alarm, which was a fun touch and you would want a different alarm for that rather than general emergency.

I figured that Ripley did everything right and the abortion to the self destruct failed anyways. A reactor meltdown was probably already in progress, so turning on the cooling system wouldn’t have mattered. Did the company do repeated tests of turning the cooling system back on just before 5 mins and just after 5 mins to know that’s the exact cutoff time? 😂

@ I zoomed in on the instructions. There was a CAUTION ⚠️ warning in a yellow box, clearly stating to re-engage the locks, PRIOR to the abortion command. If the locks are not re-engaged, the abortion command will NOT work. Oops! Ripley cut it too close, so she didn’t have time to retry the abortion sequence, the correct way. Oops, again! Anyways, even if she had done it correctly, waiting until literally the last second to turn on the cooling system is very risky.

I always found it interesting why you couldn't shut off the auto destruct off with so much time left. I get it's too add tension, but logistically in my head canon, it needed the 5 minutes to return to normal levels

What you have to remember is that this isn't a set of inbuilt scuttling charges or firing off a warhead inside a magazine. It's forcing a power plant with thousands of automatic cut-offs and inherent self-regulating subsystems to fail in the most catastrophic way possible. What is most likely going on is that the self-destruct system fires at the point of no return, but it takes another 5 minutes for the reactor to run wild and explode.

There's a wax museum in my city with an Aliens exhibit. The hallway is made to look like a corridor of the Nostromo and behind a glass pane in another room you see a model of the Xenomorph. It's almost pitch black except for the flashing of red emergency lights and this track is blaring in the background. It is utterly amazing and gives me chills up my spine.
