The abort didn’t work in the end because Ripley forgot to reengage the safety interlocks (those two big levers) prior to starting the abort procedure. She didn’t read the abort instructions written on the panel cover correctly, which clearly states under “scuttle procedure” to “re-engage safety interlocks prior to abort code input”. The movie deserves recognition for that level of detail.

I really love the attention to detail here. In the movie, Ripley says "Mother, I turned the cooling system back on!" This implies that the ship achieves self destruct by letting its nuclear reactor core overheat and reach meltdown. This is further supported by the label on the inside of the panel cover over the self destruct mechanism, where the step by step process refers to "NUCLEAR BOLT CODE" and "NUCLEAR HEAD" as part of the process. You can hear in this sequence that the first small background explosion sound effects only start playing after the override option has expired. This implies that the 5 minute cutoff time is the time it takes before the core gets hot enough to start severely damaging the ship around it, including the safety and control systems. I really like this attention to detail the OP put in when assembling the soundscape.

It seems like everyone in the comments section has an in depth knowledge of the Nostromo spacecraft and the movie, but for extra context I’ll add some details here: The self destruct sequence is intentionally highly complex so that nobody could ever trigger it by accident. Once it is activated, it draws the coolant supply away from the ships nuclear core and allows it to overheat and eventually explode within a timed window. The excess coolant is blown into the rest of the ship through pipes, hence why there’s lots of escaping coolant vapour in the movie. Someone also mentioned that the safety interlocks must be re-engaged before entering the abort code. Because Ripley’s path to the shuttle was blocked by the alien, she didn’t have enough time to reset the system, panicked and missed this step. The amount of details and practical effects in this movie are still impressive to this day
@Thedutchjelle11 ай бұрын
Blowing coolant into the ship is such an odd decision when they could've vented it into space or in a separate holding tank. High temperature water can kill quickly and cause some awful burns.
@xenomorphbiologist-xx121411 ай бұрын
@@Thedutchjelle that’s probably true, but that would also change the way the ship would handle. If the coolant is directed into the ship, no mass is lost and the performance is relatively similar. If someone decided to override the self destruct sequence and as a result, lost half their coolant to space, it would probably affect the engines and ship’s performance.
@xenomorph-20178 ай бұрын
@xenomorphbiologist-xx1214 @Thedutchjelle is half right in my opinion. The coolant should be kept in the ship for the first five minutes, but once that window passes and the ship's destruction is inevitable, it might as well be tossed into space to facilitate escape on board.

@@dave23024 Not really... it is more like the self-destruct sequence is really only 5 minutes, but part of the activation sequence involves waiting 5 minutes without cancellation to make damned sure you mean it. When you think of it in those terms, it makes perfect sense.

@@dave23024 They turn on the self-destruct by turning the cooling units off. I think that after a certain point the process becomes irreversible.
@xenomorph-20178 ай бұрын
I've always wondered why there was only a five minute window to abort the self destruct sequence. But since the process involves directing coolant away from the ship's nuclear reactor of an engine and allowing it to overheat, after five minutes the engine would be so hot that no amount of coolant would be able to stop it now, leading to the ship's inevitable destruction.
@speltincorrectyl18448 ай бұрын
I always thought it locked in at 5 minutes to incentivise crew to try and escape instead of disabling the self destruct. People will always prefer to disable the self destruct than flee the ship, yet if the countdown is too low than fleeing is the safer option. If the sequence locks in then it means that people are forced to escape and don't risk their lives trying to deactivate the sequence.
@xenomorph-20178 ай бұрын
@speltincorrectyl1844 possibly. Though normally, since a ship is set to self-destruct as a last resort, it's not likely that someone would go back to disable it unless they had no other choice. I imagine since these ships are Godzilla sized, their engines burn super hot to power them, especially towing starships like the Nostromo, which had to haul tens of millions of tons of ore and the refinery containing it. It'd make sense that once the coolant goes, it doesn't take long for the engines and reactor to heat up to the point where the coolant can't stop it. Since reapplying the coolant at that point would be like chucking a small bottle of water into a bonfire, the abort system is locked up as a way to force evacuation since the ship's destruction is inevitable.
@neodonkey8 ай бұрын
I agree, it was designed in as a deliberate removal of coolant from the nuclear reactor. After 5 minutes things have gotten so out of control that no amount of fiddling can right it. This is why you hear the sounds of the reactor breaking down after 5 mins. It's too late to fix, you've sealed your fate.
@nathanrobinson21308 ай бұрын
I always wondered about the characterization of that time. "Hey, nuclear engineer: if we remove coolant from the reactor, how long until it explodes?" "Exactly five minutes and zero seconds."
@xenomorph-20178 ай бұрын
@nathanrobinson2130 well ten minutes because the reactor needs to overheat

Someone needs to make an Alien themed escape room with this as the time limit. You win if you escape but tell players in the beginning, they can also win if they can override automatic detonation. Have a puzzle that says self destruct override and even if they solve it, the countdown keeps going.

Nostromo's scuttle system actually puts 10 mins 45 seconds on the clock at the start of the countdown. If you go back and watch the scene from the movie, the first frame we see of the countdown shows T-minus '1043', seconds after mother says "Danger." Still, job well done. Kind of gave me chills...
