Classic voicing. OLD school jazz knows about this with the b13 which you don't see to often but a great sound.

I like to listen or read (if I am transcribing or studying a transcription) a lick and see what I can come up on my using the same rhythmic notation.

I love this advice. In fact, when I was studying "What is This Thing Called Love" my piano teacher took me to Open Studio's super chorus and it featured different solos of pianist who played this tune. I believe it was Oscar Peterson, Errol Garner, and another pianist as well.

Quick breakdown for anyone wondering how a person could do this: First he finds the starting note of the track, which is almost always the root note. The root note is basically what the track is created around. He finds it by simply compering what is played to his keyboard. After this he finds the scale it is written in, by listening for what interval is between the note he just played, and the the couple notes that come afterwards. (An interval is basically the ”distance” between two notes. If you imagine all notes as steps on a staircase, an interval would be a jump from the first step to the third, the first step to the fourth, etc. A musician memorises how these distances sound, which is what allows one to figure out how to play a track) After finding the scale, he now has a framework which he can work around, which sorta limits the amount of notes he has to guess around. Then he uses his ear, and continues to listen for the intervals between every note in the context of the scale. I’m an educated musician, and can say with full confidence that my ability to do this is not even remotely close to his level. But most of us do know the tricks applied. Hope this helped in making some sense into what he is doing. And if you are a musician thinking you’ll never learn this: You sure can! It ain’t easy, but not as hard as it seems either ❤

omg Noah- i've been searching for things like that "double flick" technique , THANK YOU!! I had no idea what to call this kind of thing- i was looking up multi-note fingering/arpeggiation/melody techniques, and I just kept getting back videos on correct scale fingering... Do you have any videos or courses that dive specifically into more of these neo soul/gospel/r&b embelishments and exercises to train your finger dexterity for these? I finally started working more on melody and improv- and i have a lot of good info/exercises on composing melody- but i really want to work on my physical technique and building thus vocab of common embelishments

Jesus died on the cross and rose back to life again for you and me so we can be forgiven of our sins. Turn to Jesus and repent of your sins. Satan is a deceiver, and he tries to lead people away from Jesus because He is the only way, the only truth, and the only life. He is the only way to eternal life. Jesus loves you more than anyone ever will.🙏

It’s really funny how you can learn to be a jazz pianist with 33 years under your belt without learning this stuff. It really baffles me as to how this isn’t regular common knowledge in music. I can already tell learning this stuff will make me a better player over night.
