When you mentioned all the locations Mario Kart 64 ended up in, the place I find most synonymous w/ it was Best Buy. This was back when they cobbled together a bunch of screens into a giant super TV you could see from the entrance. The sides of it were surrounded by a giant Mario & Sonic in their typical promo material poses. The central pole it was on had a SNES w/ Yoshi's Island on one side and Game Boy on the other (Virtual Boy briefly in '95/'96), but front and center displaying on the giant screen was an N64, 4 controllers and a copy of this game. Wario Stadium was a common sight walking into the store throughout '97. Banjo-Kazooie & Star Wars Episode 1 Racer were later featured on it. Given how much the store scaled back its games area going into Gen 6, that was a remarkable thing to encounter. The only thing that came close was singing on their Wii copy of Beatles Rock Band (not the demo so almost all of the songs were available).

This video feels like a video that would have a lot more views than it does, so great job on this. As someone who's favorite game ever is this game; this game's world building is really top tier. There's so many little things in this game that I can't get enough of, so many different background characters going through their own stories, or every level serving a real purpose for the tropical island vacation setting. I don't know if you're aware of mods for this game at all, but a really big one is coming out in a few weeks, Super Mario Eclipse. I'm bringing that up because it seems to be maintaining the world building from the original game really well from what I've seen.

The fact that Dragon Quest never took off in the west like how it did in Japan proves to me that Americans have no taste. Hell, I'm not much better either. I slept on this series for years and only ever barely touched the first game. Then I tried 11 and realized just what I was missing out on. Now I prefer Dragon Quest wayyy more than other similar RPGs like Final Fantasy, and to this day I'm still kicking myself for sleeping on it. Now I've beaten 1, 2, 3, 11S, and 8. Now I'm playing through 8's postgame, 5, and later 9 as I wait for 3 HD-2D. This series it peak, and God bless Akira Toriyama's soul.

Sorry for the late response, but thanks so much for sharing! I totally agree; Dragon Quest has been slept on for too long here in the west, and I’m guilty of that, too! My journey with the series has looked pretty similar to yours, and I find myself now wondering why it took me so long! There’s this whimsical simplicity about the games that is so refreshing considering how bloated and self-serious so many modern RPG’s can be. I love it. Can’t wait for HD-2D!!!

@@GamesAreCreative the main thing that makes dragon quest better than final fantasy is final fantasy always wants to change a battle system that didnt need to be changed that much, force dumb gimmicks on the player, and force a dumb minigame on the player every other battle. dragon quest is the super mario of RPGs. final fantasy is the sonic the hedgehog of RPGs.

@OmegaChase1002 haha that’s fair! I honestly love both, but I do agree that, for everything I love about FF, it can feel a bit exhausting to always learn these new systems, whereas DQ feels like slipping on a comfortable, familiar pair of shoes. I do appreciate the innovative spirit of the FF series, but DQ also just knows what works and leans into that! Love it!

@@OmegaChase1002 to me the biggest difference is Dragon Quest's focus on having interesting and unique towns, dungeons, and continents to explore. Secrets in dragon quest do not rely on walking into invisible walls or entering a random tile on the overworld screen. Instead they rely on exploration, observation of the environment, and talking to people to get clues. Dragon Quest also has a sense of "chill" that Final Fantasy doesnt. I love walking around towns, talking to people, and exploring the overworld. I love seeing the cool/cute designs of the enemies and gambling in the casinos. Final Fantasy is so focused on the dramatic elements of its stories and trying to create a seemingly complex battle system that it loses sight of everything in-between. Dragon Quest is absolutely Super Mario. Final Fantasy is absolutely Sonic the Hedgehog.

I played the Switch versions of DQ I-III and I have to say that I love the art style. I mean, I know what everyone says, but if you think about it, Toriyama came to design the monsters and because of hardware limitations they had to be in pixel art on NES, and then SNES. People bash these ports because they’re not pixelated art, but I disagree as these ports have the original Toriyama art right into the game, and I think that’s beautiful.

Earlier this year I started playing DQ1 after finding out it was available on the Play Store for Android. Up until then I had no prior knowledge of the franchise other than it had characters designed by Akira Toriyama, that it's considered the father of JRPGs and that it's a "competitor" to Final Fantasy which I'm fairly familiar with. As soon as I started playing DQ1 it was love at first sight. I loved its simplicity and how gameplay focused it was. After finishing it I decided to give DQ4 a go, since I had heard good things about it, particularly about Torneko's chapter and how it's very unique to anything out there. Just like DQ1, I fell in love immediately and DQ4 stands as my favorite so far (I've just finished DQ2 and I'm currently playing DQ3). Anyway, love the game, its characters and soundtrack. All around a great and memorable experience. Thanks for your video on it. I'm looking forward to more!

I think my biggest struggle with this game comes from the combination of the lengthier and gimmicky tracks (Bowser’s Castle is a perfect example) combined with just how slow the game feels in general. It gave me more perspective as to how the series has been really well refined over time, but it was also cool to see the origin of some iconic tracks!

Generation 1 will always have a special place in my heart. It may not be pretty and saying that it was held together by paperclips and bubblegum is an insult to paperclips and bubblegum, but these games were very important to me and my brother during our earlier years and still are to this day. Pokémon was a phenomenon. You couldn't escape it whether you wanted to or not. Everyone we knew had the games and it was briefly playing our friends' Game Boys that we were able to get our first taste of Red and Blue. When we got Game Boy Colors of our own around the time of my brother's birthday, we got a slew of games like Link's Awakening DX, but the ones we wanted the most were the Pokemon games. We would ultimately get all three games for ourselves that year, but despite us having already sampled Red and Blue, our first game that we *owned* was Yellow. Our parents even bought us an unofficial guide in order to see how we could defeat Brock without using Bulbasaur, Squirtle or even Charmander (you can at least cheese Brock with a STAB Ember even as a first form Fire type; not so in Fire Red and Leaf Green!). What we got was an informative guide that laid out the differences between the three versions (i.e.: Pikachu naturally learning Thunderbolt at Level 26). It also had a brief HISTORY of the development of the games including the little factoid that the games were originally Red and *Green* with the one left behind becoming (for our intents and purposes) our American Blue. It also had photos of merchandise from Japan that haven't yet come stateside (most never did), an episode list that briefly gave a summary of each episode up to that point in Japan (and yes, it DID include the banned Electric Porygon episode), a Pokedex that had the Pokemon Stadium models next to the Pokémon *Green* sprites, a primer on the Pokémon TCG and, last but certainly not least, walkthroughs for Generation 1 and even Pokémon Snap of all games! I still have the guide in my room with some of the pages missing, presumable lost in my cousin's house over in the Philippines when we went there on vacation back in '99. Anyways, the guide taught us that there were wild Mankey west of Viridian City that can learn Low Kick at Level 9. It also taught us that Butterfree now learns Confusion at Level 10, the earliest it can evolve! Despite this, and because we were stubborn, we decided the best course of action was to powerlevel our Pikachu to Level 20 so it can learn Slam. Yes it's a garbage move, but we wanted to prove we could beat Brock with just a Pikachu. And beat him we did. Not only did it make the rest of the warly game easier (our Pikachu was at max happiness meaning we could immediately pick up the Bulbasaur at Cerulean City), but it meant we were more likely to learn Thunderbolt right before Misty. This surprisingly effective strategy has been so ingrained in my mind that I do this alongside training Mankey to Level 9 and getting Butterfree at Level 10 every single time I replay Yellow. Some habits, like Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic Adventure 2, die hard. XD Anyways, I really enjoyed the video! You basically managed to take every reason Generation 1 was such a great game and how it changed the gaming landscape in a clear and concise video. Keep up the great work!

The power of nostalgia is both Pokémon's greatest strength and weakness. Pokémon captures the hearts of children all across the world, and those children grow up loving Pokémon throughout their lives. Game Freak knows this; they understand the personal connection you have with your Pokémon, the unforgettable journey you embarked on with your first game, and the fond memories you hold of Pokémon. On the surface, this seems like a positive thing, and in some ways, it is. I'm not here to tell you that you can't enjoy Pokémon due to nostalgia. Instead, I'm here to discuss how the game's quality is affected by it. Pokémon stands as one of the most successful franchises in the world. However, the games often fail to reflect that success. They might be buggy, possess low-quality graphics, or even be perceived as overall boring. How does Pokémon manage to get away with this? Let me explain why: nostalgia. Pokémon fans from around the world tend to acquire each new entry because it's a new Pokémon game, and they recall the enjoyment they experienced as kids. And guess what? Game Freak is well aware of this. Consequently, the games often have lower quality than they should, because Game Freak knows they don't have to put in excessive effort. They understand that Pokémon fans will purchase the next game regardless. Thus, the power of nostalgia might be beneficial for fans but detrimental to the games' quality.

This is super insightful; thanks so much for sharing! I will love Pokémon until my dying breath 😂, but I totally agree that, especially in recent years, it seems like The Pokémon Company kinda has abused that hold it has on its fans. Part of me wonders how much of it is Game Freak and how much is The Pokémon Company. Like when I played SwSh, Legends, and SV, I felt like all of them had a lot of solid ideas that were WAY too rushed. It made me wonder what kind of pressure Game Freak might be under to keep up with the anime, TCG, and other merchandise. They know that the video games are the engine that keep the Pokémon machine running; I just wonder if the fault is up to the devs or if it’s the corporate heads. All that being said, I agree that Pokémon struggled with ambition and originality long before the Switch era. In my opinion, the quality drop off in the visual department really started after Gen 5, but even before then, we had basically played the same game a half dozen times already, just repackaged with different critters. 😂 All that to say, I hear you and I’m with you. I love Pokémon and have bought every mainline game, but it sucks to know that there are people out there who seek to profit off of that with as little effort and creativity as possible. Regardless, though, what I’ve loved most about my journey on this channel so far is that no matter how many competing interests or corporate agendas might influence a game’s development, there’s always still room to find something to celebrate in a work of art. I think 2 things can be true at once, and while Pokémon certainly does not typically capture all that it could be, the series will always be special in my eyes. Thanks again for sharing! Hope you enjoyed the video!
