Faith in Lord Jesus Christ was at stake. Now He has won the issue of Universal Sovereignty we just need to be faithful and He rewards us with eternal life as His friend. John 3:16 ☦️

Perhaps on a later video you can examine whether KZbin contributes or distracts from the media issue. The algorhythm replaces the remote and TV Guide, yet your channel showed up in my recommendations. Is this a maturation of the infant or a maturation of the demon?

I think wisdom is summed up pretty well in the word itself- Wisdom (wise-dumb)- a man who is “dumb” is often a deeply present person. He may lack knowledge and understanding but he is present and connected to his body. Conversely a man who is deeply knowledgeable may not be wise because knowledge alone can remove him from his body. He may know much about the world but be disconnected from what’s directly around him. A wise man is both knowledgeable and present or at least intelligent and present (wise and dumb). Therefore A wise man must be deeply understanding. He must understand how to incorporate knowledge without it disturbing his healthy state of being. Much of my take on this comes from George Gurdjieff’s teaching in “In Search of the Miraculous”

Excellent talk, Herman. For myself, I have always found that when discerning truth in these and other situations, two extremely useful tools are Occam's razor and Cost/Benefit analysis. Many conspiracy theories posit things that are simply too complicated under careful examination to be plausible, or where the potential cost to "them" drastically outweighs any potential benefit. Human beings are rarely so ideological that they will act directly against their own interests (although it does happen occasionally), and of course, the more complicated a conspiracy the more likely it is to fail or be discovered. Again, great talk.

I'm extremely doubtful that the greater ease of conspiracy theories/whistle blowing accounts for the collapse in institutional trust. I believe it's simply that the public's greater exposure to the people in power has revealed that they're deeply mendacious, self-serving, and foolish. As a father's authority can not survive his children learning that he is a lying and selfish fool, neither can or current elite's

Arendt's observations on totalitarianism mirror those of Eric Hoffer's in The True Believer. As an avowed "conspiracy theorist," I find myself consistently humbled by Ecclesiastes, where Solomon declares even the most erudite of wise men as vain. Yet we Orthodox Christians are still called to pursue Truth and truth - the transcendental Truth of Christ and worldly truth as best we can, forming two bars of the Cross we must carry. Wise as serpents, gentle as doves 'n all that. There comes a point when the collection of facts must cease and we must distill them into Wisdom guided by the Holy Spirit. St. Paisios warned of a supercomputer creating a dossier on all of Creation well before the Internet, which is also very humbling to the data-craved "conspiracy theorist"!

Sound advice from those who have lived the badness of the Totalitarian life; more gratitude...an appreciation for the good things of our live...return to simplicity/moderation. And then there's the all-important, albeit oh-so-difficult "God's will be done...." Our lives must echo Elder Thaddeus -- "“He who lives according to God’s will has no worries. When he needs something, he simply prays for it. If he does not receive that which he asked for, he is joyful as though he had received it. A soul that has given itself over to God has no fear of anything, not even robbers, sickness, or death. Whatever happens, such a soul always cries, ‘It was the will of God’.”

This called me out! Nowadays I find that the bulk of my DMs are filled with posts and memes. Even my own siblings and I are constantly sharing things that make us laugh, startle us, or rarely introduce an idea. We aren't discussing anything in depth, only sharing our reactions to the world around us. I wonder what the long term implications of this are.

ALAS, brother(!) I wonder, too...I think we're already seeing some of the implications (and they're not good). One of my many hopes with this channel is that it can be a place where people who *are* noticing these things can gather...and can help others appreciate the bigger picture...

Thank you for posting these videos, this new channel and discussion of its corresponding topic is much-needed. It's noteworthy that your position on Postman's "Technopoly" is very similar to Cal Newport's "Techno-Selectivism," though even Postman himself notes that our ability to choose which technologies we interact with is largely moot when it comes to how they shape culture if the broader society doesn't share our selectivism. It invariably leads to something akin to Huxley's "Savage Reservations" in Brave New World, or maybe the way some Anabaptist sects live in a more positive vision. Unlike Postman, Newport is very much a utilitarian who doesn't see the religious and ritualistic elements of Technopoly that we Orthodox Christians cannot ignore. There's an interesting book called "The Sovereign Individual" written a few years after Technopoly that is basically the techno-optimist's take on the same phenomenon and equally prophetic. It's a good (if not disturbing) read and is very popular in cryptocurrency/transhumanist circles, might be worth addressing to your audience in the future! Speaking strictly personally as both a Christian and a software engineer, I don't see any way forward for the remnant except for a significant paring down of our interaction with The Machine - one that is far greater in scope than most moderns would be comfortable with. While interface devices like the smartphone or social media are doubtlessly dangerous of their own accord, far more dangerous are the networks they connect to. Keep up the great work, some of us are listening attentively!

Why should I care about our "culture"? I care about my friends and family and what I do. I care about being ethical. I care about the victimized. But caring about an abstract thing that I have no influence over which is run for the benefit of venal billionaires....why should I care? I wish harm onnno one except billionaires, fascists, and bullies.
@GadflyAcademy
@GadflyAcademy 4 ай бұрын
I guess because you, your family, and your friends all have to live somewhere in some environment, in some culture. If you have children, they will probably want to marry someone, and the kind of environment they grew up in will affect your child, and you. At some point you will get old and may need to be cared for...it will matter to you if we have fostered a culture of life or a culture of death. Fwiw, I believe that we do have influence over what happens...each of us does...obviously, not a great deal of influence, but each of us must do what we can...

Are you kidding? You should care because television, advertising, misleading information, sordid imagery, a corrupt mass media, etc., all of it pushed by billionaires and fascists down our throats and our children’s throats like endless visual and mental junk food, pervades our every thought, our decisions, and perceptions of reality. Time to get real. At least for your family’s sake.
