Goalie kids out there, check out the difference between an OHL(very good goalie) and a pro(better goalie) and it comes down to the details. Look at Chase's glove hand when he drives back to the right post. It is totally out of the play and useless in that position. By contrast look at how controlled Nick's glove is in the same movement, open and out and controlled. Control your hands boys and girls, keep them open and out and ready to react. In this situation say a player down below the goal line on the right tries a flip pass to the low slot, you're going to be slot to intercept it. Or if they bank it off you, if it nits Chase's glove that's going to rebound in, where as Nick is likely to cleanly catch it. Details matter.

I went to a camp in 94 with John Blue, who played with Boston in the early 90's. John was also the first goalie from California to play in the NHL, fun fact.. Now in So-cal, they have rinks everywhere., which makes teams and people good. Kudo's this kid

Very good information….I have seen many practices in minor hockey boys and girls that the coaches ignore the goalie (target practice only). Many don’t understand the position so they focus on the 15 skaters only. Team nots going to do well with no goalie instruction so that’s why I stepped up and coach the goalies on my daughter’s teams. Took the 2 goalie clinics and researched playing the position. So far I’ve had good feed back and seems to be helping the goalies game and building confidence. Thanks so much for your videos they are very helpful!

Stick saves is one of the hardest thing I have found to coach with the younger ages. Teaching to use their shoulders and hips to turn the stick instead of reaching. I've found taping a bingo dabber to the bottom of their stick and having them realize that the stick moves in arc motion instead of straight lines in front of them has help. When my son played atom, he was called up to Peewee. He was afraid of some of the kids slapshots there., especially towards his head. What did we do? We went home and I threw a bucket of picks at his head, one at a time, until he was comfortable. Not sure if that approach was a bit crazy, but it worked 😅.
@jasondreyfus7911Ай бұрын
Love you content, but I have to disagree on one point. You said that the goalie coach can't be just some beer league guy. We do offer value, especially with the younger kids where an expensive goalie coach won't be at practice. We can help implement basic skating drills and help newer coaches understand the need to have separate training for goalies. There is not enough goalie coaches and to say a beer league can't teach is just not true.
@FutureProGoaltendingUSAАй бұрын
@jasondreyfus7911 you missed the point. A beer league goalie coach is PERFECT!!! If…… they are updated on their goalie education. . If a beer league goalie is teaching how THEY played that is to be avoided. I played, coached and scouted in the NHL and 75% of what I teach I have never done personally..😎

You're right, the basics are important. I think there is a major gap in Canadian youth goalie development.

There is a gap across the board, Canada and the US, where I am based. I get your point about whether they can teach modern style and that i do agree with. But I would argue give some of them a shot. Some communities in Minnesota and California in the larger populated areas actually gear the kids up all the way threw minor hockey. Taking the cost to the parents out of the picture. Most parents now days, and perhaps always, dreaded the cost if their kid wanted to be a goalie. They do it in other places around the world like Europe and Russia. We may want to look at something like that here, because their is a Canadian Goalie issue.
@FutureProGoaltendingUSAАй бұрын
@@jamesbruce8749 We all had minor hockey gear growing up but it was crappy. Parents do not want the stress and expense with the fact that the kid and parents can do EVERYTHING humanly possible to progress and something directly out of their control will invariably end the journey.

Canadian goalie experience: 1. No hope to play at higher levels unless 6'1 or above. A few exceptions, of course. This is discouraging to many parents. 2. Utter corruption at every level with hockey Canada. Where I live, the coach's son and his friend or assistant coach's son is always the AA goalie. 3. Triple A? Ugh, even worse corruption. The #1 ranked goalie was not chosen for the team in PeeWee. 4. BUT, the division 1 school system, competing with the AAA league in Quebec, is producing exvellent goaltenders. They simply choose the best kids applying to the school, and many have full time goalie coaches ( like my sons school). My son doesnt play at College Ester Blondin, but this school produces awesome goaltenders year after year.
@FutureProGoaltendingUSAАй бұрын
@@m____w____6981 1. This is a true statement, but speaks to the fact the parents are 100% wrong barking up the wrong tree if they won’t participate unless their child has a real opportunity to play in the NHL. So myopic. It is like someone refusing to play the stat lottery because they don’t have a real opportunity. ( and we know half stacked those odds are….. more people win a massive lottery every year in North America than the number of new NHL goalies annually. 2. Politics has always been there and always will. It isn’t new. Overcoming politics is only possible with overwhelming awesome ability and performance delivery. Many, Many great goalies never make it. Being great isn’t enough. Overwhelmingly Awesome is something entirely different. 3. Story as old as time. 4. Anyone actually make it from there beyond Q? 5. For a Canadian goalie to play in the NHL now, they need this recipe. A) amazing born with size talent and athletic talent. B) amazing consistent peak performance delivery 8-9m games out of ten and be starring in major junior by 18. If you don’t do (possess) any one of those listed attributes, you are not playing for a real career. But that is okay. You shouldn’t be playing to make it. Play for all the other reasons and then be pleasantly surprised if your output ends up on TV.
