Up until a few years ago, in NY that is, if you hired an agent you’d also have to pay their brokers fee which is also the equivalent of first month’s rent. So I had to pay the brokers fees, 1st month’s rent and 1 month security.

Re: names in 1920s. Can't we use the mixed conditional here as, if you were born 5 y back, your name would be Esther .. meaning that that would have been her name by now..

In Russia we have to pay an agency fee which is usually up to 80% of a monthly rent. Sometimes along with security deposit (sometimes) and last month deposit (rarely)

Wow! I will add that in New York City you usually have to pay an agent fee as well, but that is the only place I know in the US where you could expect to pay up to 1 month’s rent as a fee. Interesting!

Yeah, actually most places have a requirement that your monthly salary must be at least 3x rent.

Landlords a just getting greedy trying to make it standard to have applicants/potential tenants pay three months worth of rent. We’re approaching the point when we’ll need $10,000 just to get an apartment. Awful.

I want to immigrate and settle in U. S. A.. Your information is very useful for hopefuls like me. Let me give you the system here. I live at Mahaaraashtra state of Bhaarata(India). •I have to pay 2 months of rent as security deposit. •I pay rent on the last day of the month but many landlords take it on the first day of the month. •There is option of signing legal contract while renting a place but most of the landlords, tenents opt out of it. •Rent depends on the area of city and the condition of rooms. Rent varies between one-fourth of average salary of lower-middle class employee for the barely acceptable rooms to double or higher of the salary for posh ones. •Many of the landlords exclude electricity bills out of the rent. I have to pay it separately. I hope my information is useful.

There is a big challenge to your and our humanity happening in Gaza. The Jews, occupants of Palestine are not fighting like men but behaving in a base manner killing children and the dispalced, women and the sick in Hospitals. Unfortunately for all humans, the jews are backed up by the crusaders and the hypocrites of the Arabs. The other world is just watching the massacres cowardly.
