Great instruction. Thanks. Speaking of pedal contact and control I think it’s “ice ages” to use flats - Pedals . We ride very advanced bikes and control is the essential element, So just buy some Remtech magnet pedals and accelerate your performance and control, power and confidence. I rode SPD in my early 20’s. Back in the 90’s , then got back into biking in 2016 with Time especial clip-ins. But as I got more technical double blue, black trails the Hustle Remtech pedals have been absolutely amazing! 🤩.

Focus is a huge contributor to either success or errors! I’ll be riding really well, usually on a technical climb, I’ll start to get tired or hit a spot that’s a little easier, and my mind will start to wander. That’s where my front wheel will get hung up on a rock or I’ll end up off-line. I have to re-focus myself with self-talk like you described. You put it really well!

So sorry to hear. But very relatable. He is landing very rear-wheel heavy, which is a common mistake if riders advance to gaps too early, without building reliable and spontaneously adaptable movement patterns in a safe environment first. The "trick" to safe airtime is being able to intuitively adapt to the shape of ramp, distance to landing, shape of landing and gap distance. This takes a lot of deliberate practice and it's much safer and faster with pro feedback. Which is exactly what I do with my clients with my remote coaching (check the pinned comment).

Holy Smokes! I just found you through a Century Rider video. How did i never hear about you before that?!? I've been mountain biking off and on for about 30 something years, and I got some real gold nuggets just in this little video. I've always been pretty good riding slow, super technical stuff, like roots, rock gardens, drops, step ups and gnarly climbs. But, I moved to Whitehorse, Yukon, and we have about 800 kms of proper trails just around the city itself! It's a different game here, and now in my fourties, and a crash this summer that I still have a bum shoulder from, has me open to unlearning/relearning some things. I'm a wrench at a local shop, and glad to be back in the scene. There's a ladies ride group here that my wife rides in, and I've been sharing videos with her. You are such a great instructor! Knowledgeable, able to easily get ideas across, with real experience and super amicable. I love how you even break down the learning process. I was a field instructor for years, and not everyone sees it the same way I do. Anyways, I'm SO STOKED to have found your channel. Right now it's just fat biking and cross country skiing until May or June. But, I will be practicing like mad by then, with all your tips. It would be so rad if you came here to do a few clinics. We have the Contagious Mountain Bike Association, and two shops here in Whitehorse. I can see a ladies clinic and a general clinic both being well attended and appreciated. And I'm sure we could show you the real world-class gem that Whitehorse is. Superb trails in pristine northern mountains. Keep up the good work! I'm hoping to ride better, longer in life, with less broken bones. LOL. Take care.

Thank you so much, your comment truly means a lot to me! Let's work together - honestly. Thing is: 90% of what I do is remote coaching, even with riders who would TECHNICALLY be close-by, because (as you know how learning works), learning motor patterns takes time and spaced repetition. And that's exactly what I offer with my home training library and personal feedback - it allows people to make progress way faster at a MUCH more affordable rate. That's why I never only work in person - I always work in a "hybrid" way - online as the foundation and in person for the tweaks. But tweaks are almost impossible to make if the foundation is wonky. Plus: As I'll never be able to work in the US anyway, the chance to get a work visa is almost null, this is your chance to work with me personally wherever you are. I'm gonna share a link in the next comment. Much love to you and your wife, keep sharing my videos 😍together we can make this sport safer, Roxy

We tried. Actually during the race Berni rode up to him and rode next to him riding uphill and the guy accused Berni of riding a tuned bike (which he does not) and not taking the "race" serious enough. His friends started to back him up so Berni let them believe what they wanted and came back to me. Funny story - his wife is a big fan of mine and she apologised for him.

@@benjy288and that precisely is the problem. You THINK you get the essence and then judge. It’s called confirmation bias and it the number one thing that jeopardizes growth. I’m not complaining - actually, if you had listened to the episode you would know that I turned the entire thing into a positive. And in retrospect I’m grateful for all the comments as it highlighted a much deeper problem. The real issue here js: This is the second time you are patronizing/mansplaining me - AND not listening/being open to try things. If you don’t like me and my content that’s ok. It truly is. But then don’t waste your and my time by commenting on them - the only thing that this does is: it brings negativity into your and my life and tells the algorithm to show you more content like mine. Go find stuff you like, comment on the stuff you DO like positively and contribute positively to the world. It will bring back positivity into your life. Simple as that. Because the fact that you chose to bring negativity into your and my life says more about you than it says about me. So you’re not insulting me here 😊 Btw - it’s not „supposedly“ stealing. I have proof. (I actually name some in this podcast) But I have enough ethical awareness as to not share their details publicly - this video was a heads up to them - and some have already deleted their content, so they are fully aware 😊 Wishing you all the best, Benjy. Once we actually write the nastiness out it becomes so much more real and thus changeable.

Hi Roxy, First of all congrats on your awesome results. I’ve been racing all my life and if there is one thing I learned then it is that we should always enjoy the moment and if that moment is celebrating a win then take it and do so. We often under value ourselves and don’t allow ourselves to enjoy victory. Things don’t always go to plan and often races could end up with an undesirable outcome. In these moments take time to appreciate yourself because if we don’t make mistakes we won’t learn and improve. I’ve learned that you will find far worse behaviour from individuals at hobby races than in professional racing. You have to understand the mentality of the hobby racer for some individuals this is what defines them and hence the aggression and anger. These days I take time to have a humanly conversation with these individuals to see if there is an opportunity to show them kindness and love. Often showing people who feels undervalued kindness and love might help them to improve, but of course some people are just stubborn. I’m looking forward to hearing your insights as you progress through racing. The biggest defining characteristic of a successful race is to remain calm and in control - trust yourself that you will remember practice and perform at your best and as you mentioned be kind to yourself for the “mistakes” don’t dwell on it move on. Happy racing champion!

It just reminded me that I’d rather be out practicing skills, improving my coaching or riding for fun with friends than rushing through a marked forest 😅 so I don’t know if I will race again in the next time. It’s great that you show empathy to these rowdies, I agree, it’s just a cry for help. Thanks for sharing. 😍🥰🙏

Thank you for episode #30. I really needed to hear this message this morning. Having recently raced 20 miles alone, I understand in-head chatter can be persistent and distracting. It can be hard to stay focused. (Especially when you come across hunters with rifles on the course. That was both motivating and distracting 😅!) But, yes, you are so right: what, when & how you talk to yourself while riding makes a big difference. Yes, the chatter can draw you out of the moment and make you vulnerable, but I think it can also guide you back into the moment. I think that when my thoughts turn more negative, that is a sign of physical boundaries. These conversations show me what I need to be cautious of, or prepare for better, so that the next section, or the next ride, will be more positive. I find just acknowledging the negative & promising myself to practice x later, can help drain the mental bog. Listening to your podcast helped me realize this. Thank you.❤

Two surprising lessons we learnt racing a local mtb race (Marcha Polop 2024) yesterday: 1. Mom is always number 1 🤣 2. The only superpower you need is FOCUS. FOCUS is the solution to way more than you think - also when it comes to mountain biking: 1 - I (Roxy) almost crashed twice today. Almost. And both times I was focusing on something else than the NOW. (1-Someone by the trailside called my name and 2- I got angry at the a**hole rider who pushed me off the trail and thus lost my trail-focus - you can actually see him in the video, as he also gives Berni the elbow) 2 - Let’s face it: For most hobby racers, the race result is NOT going to be life-altering. Why risk your safety (and perhaps even your life), focusing on the RESULT, rather than focusing on a fun day out? (Don’t get me wrong, ambition is OK and healthy, but not if you’re taking unnatural risks!) 3 - The elusive Flow State can only be accomplished, if we focus on the NOW and if we’re not in completely above our heads. (According to science, the demands of the task need to be about 2% above our momentary skill level to be able to experience Flow State). So PRACTICE your skills BEFORE you start racing/riding at your limit. 4 - When you ride at your physical and mental limit, you WILL commit errors. Straight after you notice your error: Focus on giving your best for the NEXT move, don’t beat yourself up for the last. This will not only improve performance, but also your mood. In case you care about the result: I (Roxy) placed 1st in the female category and 15th out of 60 male emtb starters. Berni didn't cross the finish line, as he helped the injured guy and bent a pedal. But often, helping matters more than the result. Have you experienced how focus affects your performance and mood? Share with us below and save it as a reminder 🩵

With the largest asphalt surface in the world, it is not the same as the largest in the world. Don't be fooled 😂

Using the "top rider" expession threw me off as I thouht it was meaning "best rider" and not actual rider from the top of the video.😅

Thanks for sharing. 😊 That's why I added the errors. The good news - if you watch the video several times, yours start to see even more details. 😊

Men should want to encourage female riders. The more women who are out there getting into riding and dragging their female friends with them, the greater chance men riders could end up with a girlfriend or wife who not only supports them buying a new bike but also who understands when they want to spend their free time heading out on a ride - and who will even ride with them. Why discourage us by putting us down? I know I’m not great but I’m always working on it and the more I ride the more confidence I build. Having guys smash us down is wasteful on their part. Thank you to all the guys who have been encouraging above all else.

I can recommend SQLab women specific bibs that you can simply pull over the butt while keeping the shoulder straps on 😊😊
