I feel like one of the best examples of conflict in fiction is the gangs demise in Red Dead Redemption 2. SPOILERS: The conflict between Arthur and Dutch is incredible. Arthur, who has realised his morality and the consequences of his actions after his diagnosis, wants the best for the gang and people around him. For example, he wants John to leave the gang and become a family man. Also, he wants the Wapiti tribe to stop the conflict with the army and help Rains Fall. Dutch, whose mental state is in decline and is leading the gang towards its demise with his never ending plan, only wants the best for himself: violence and a never ending sense for money. For example, him manipulating the younger members of the Wapiti tribe to fight the army just for a "distraction" Peak examples I think

We watched "Ivanhoe" (Anthony Andrews 1980's version) the other night and I was thinking of this video. While he was for sure the hero, he was decidedly NOT the protagonist, as he spends most of his time injured and even when he's not, everyone else making decisions about what he's to do. I don't even think he was the main character. Amusingly, he's more of a 'damsel in distress' with everyone else coming to his rescue until the very end. There doesn't seem to be one single character making all the decisions and most of the POV's are about how they feel and think about Ivanhoe, except the antagonists who are focused on stealing the 2 women who love him. I would love to know your take on who the Main Character or protagonist is. I guess it is possible that Ivanhoe represents Honor and the rest of the characters must act honorably in order to save him. So the main character and protagonist is the concept of Honor?

I wish there were more tropes of people ending up alone and that being a positive thing, because irl some of us DO end up alone and we deserve stories that inspire us too. We don't all find love, build a chosen family that is an adequate surrogate for a real family, or acheive redemption. Life is still meaningful if those goals aren't acheived, but stories written in English speaking cultures tend to doggedly follow the biblical story arc of a character that faces adversity and becomes stronger, then builds a group of close allies/disciples, has some kind of 40 days in the wilderness/betrayal by Judas moral climax and overcomes this through moral fortitude. We CAN invent new tropes, and those will speak to and offer comfort to people whose lives don't fit the norm. It will offer more possibilities when we think about what a successful life might look like, because a life lived alone isn't necessarily a failure and it is vital for us to remedy the notion that unless we build or are accepted into a collective or couple our lives' meaning will not have been achieved. Sometimes life traumatises people too much for them to genuinely heal and they are robbed of the ability to form those kinds of relationships, sometimes people are betrayed or let down, or simply grow apart from those they thought were their chosen family for life. Sometimes people have regrets they never really make peace with, or never quite make the grade, despite giving everything they have; their lives still have meaning without a story needing to somehow turn loss or pain into a necessary evil or teaching moment. Real life has many unresolved hurts and ongoing conflicts, so I'd like stories and characters to better reflect that and for us to build new tropes that help us find meaning without writing away any and all struggle/pain or isolation as a moral lesson necessary for growth.

At its core, it's about a second chance. Everyone either has a family they like(1), has a family they don't like(2), or doesn't have a family(3). All find hope in the found family. For (1) it's about carrying forward the love you have experienced from your family to nourish the found family. For (2) and (3) it's a second chance at familial empathy that you either never had or that you lost. 1 and 2 both have families, 2 and 3 both lack a loving family, and 1 and 3 compliment each other with security versus freedom.

I understand what you’re trying to say, but saying that Sam Gsmgee isn’t a main protagonist/main character? Well it’s just not true. He moves the plot along more often than Frodo in some cases.

I'm not a professional writer, not at all (and sorry for my English in advance its not my first language) and I find myself stuck in a limbo of reading books about writing, watching videos and etc and when I sit to write...my head simply blank. Is it because I just overwhelmed myself with all this information or I simply not build as a writer..? I want my stories to be good, but I know that its almost impossible to do without making couple that really sucks, or kinda sucks... I just don't know how to break this circle and not just dream about writing a story and actually write it P.s. thank you for your video!
