I am looking forward to watching all your elastic sewing experiments. I really need this. I have a tendency to pull the elastic to death, while sewing and then wonder why the panties bag, sag and look so horrible. And yes, I agree that so many videos merrily show "them" sewing the elastic and I am left wondering how they do it and when I try to copy "them", get a totally different result. Thank you in advance for your trouble and informtion. One thing I noticed, is that when you are showing each of your elastic projects, you have a tedency you wave your hand around with the material you are holding, and it is difficult to focus on the stitching. Its like seeing wheels of a car moving in a movie - the wheels move faster than the camera speed is recording, and the end result is just blurry. Can you move a bit more slowly?

If using a 8 to 10 oz denim, what interfacing would you recommend. I have seen flat lining before. Did you stitch baste around the lined pieces or use some type of adhesive? Thank you
@SewSewLive7 күн бұрын
You might be able to skip interfacing if your denim is heavy enough. I didn’t secure the flat lining to the outer fabric. But you can! It just depends if you need it or not-if the fabrics shift a lot. I didn’t want any stitching showing along the edges for the tutorial and my fabrics stuck together in their own. I don’t recommend gluing it though.

Thanks - 1st adjustment is so intuitive - best I've seen. My only question is whether the hip balance line now has to be slanted on the pattern in order to appear level on the body, or do if I drop it at centre back so that it's squared off at the same level as the side hip mark?
@SewSewLive9 күн бұрын
Without seeing the pattern it’s hard for me to say-but I will say not all waists are parallel to the floor. The balance line is useful for standardized patterns and detecting things with your first muslin but once you’re fitting it custom, the HBL isn’t a line on a pattern used for anything drafting related. It’s not a reference for that. If you have a hip tilt, your hip line isn’t likely parallel to the floor anyway. Go for a good fit rather than worry about that line. 😀 (But like I said, this is without seeing your pattern or even knowing what garment you’re working on!)
@RHWaugh9 күн бұрын
@@SewSewLive Thanks for replying - I'm working on a basic torso sloper & in process of doing your adjustment to see how it works out. I imagine striped fabric might be an issue - but let's be real, there's no way I'll ever be putting horizontal stripes across my rear!!
@SewSewLive9 күн бұрын
@RHWaugh Ah okay! And yes. Pattern prints are always going to betray us somehow! A sloper is awesome. But it’s never going to be the final place the pattern lands. And you’ll be able to adjust for things each time you make something! And you’d likely not be comfortable with an ill fitting garment. Regardless of the stripes were parallel to the floor or not-if you don’t reach for the garment to wear it-it’s deal breaker anyway. Good luck with your drafting! 🙂

I have this book and I think the review is very fair. It is a very attractive book, but I had concluded if I was to try any of these ideas I would start with my own sloper and not try the book method. I think anyone who is a bit curvy ( me!) is going to struggle with this. It reminds me of Japanese pattern books which I absolutely love but will never make anything from bc I am a size 16-18 so too big for the largest size. I still buy them tho! The bias binding method is very popular in Japanese pattern books. I think the author is Japanese American so that would make sense.

Before stitching the binding onto the hem you might consider a heavy dose of spray starch to the blouse hem edges. When piecing difficult shapes in quilting, this is very helpful. When it dries it makes the fabric crisp like paper and it holds it's shape. After stitching the binding on, you need to rinse out the starch to soften the fabric back to it's original hand. Another step in the process but very helpful for curved hems, sleeve vents, and plackets.
@SewSewLive15 күн бұрын
That’s a great tip! I hope I remember to share that! Starch is great. There’s a few people in my community who even starch their fabric when it’s rayon or similarly slippery and cut and sew it that way. The curve wasn’t the issue for me. I don’t really like how heavy the hem got with the bias. The curve should be nice and drapey but with all that bias sewn in a narrow hem it makes it so structured it loses the drape. I’m liking a facing idea. I might try that on this one!

Goad to hear you aren't a fan of zero waste patterns--didn't realize they often use more yardage, as i've never looked as I find they are usually just ugly (though watching this as this one looks nice!). And guessing these zero waste folks never quilt or send scraps to those that do. Using more fabric to make something you likely won't wear more than once is more wasteful than making a better shaped garment made with less yardage & scraps for other projects...
@SewSewLive16 күн бұрын
I think there’s a lot of good conversation to have around zero waste. And it’s not that I’m not a fan of the pattern style. I just don’t usually like them. Most aren’t my style. And they take a lot of fabric. I do appreciate how interesting it would be to create the pattern because I like a good puzzle. Not all sewists are quilters. And not all quilters make garments. So some don’t have a use for scraps. Personally I think most companies who make zero waste patterns like the challenge of it and want to have the conversation about waste. Which I do appreciate. I make what I like! And I’m responsible with my waste. I’m also responsible with the buying of fabric. But I don’t think home sewists are the problem when it comes to waste with manufacturing clothing.

Saramy - I did not realize people fear binding and I recently made my own bias tape to bind a microwave tortilla warmer (round) I made as a gift. It was my first time quilting, first time making bias tape, and my first time binding. Good thing I did not know people feared or disliked sewing binding, or I might have been nervous, being a newbie. I just plunged in and used the following method: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIi5mGmAmNWseqs This looks much easier than they way you do it and I'm wondering if you don't use this method for a reason.
@SewSewLive21 күн бұрын
Yes! That’s how I got into binding too! I had no idea people didn’t like it. It’s just another straight seam! And I love the finish. I don’t cut continuous for a few reasons. But I don’t think it’s wrong or bad! It’s great if you like doing that. I have sewn miles of binding. I know that sounds exaggerated but it’s not! We tracked it one year. I also never pre-fold my bias. I honestly see very few reasons to pre fold in most of the situations I use it. I’m not a quilter. When I make bias I cut it, then seam it, then wind it on a spool. I spent years figuring out the fastest method with the best result for me- but I don’t think it’s better than other methods. So use what you like!

I also watched a tutorial by the lady who took over, sure fit designs she’s from South Africa and she strongly recommends stitching in the ditch on your side seam a little bit because the elastic will roll otherwise
@SewSewLive25 күн бұрын
That’s is helpful when the elastic is inside a casing loose and the casing isn’t very snug around the elastic. The elastic isn’t attached to the garment in any way. But in this case, it will not be necessary since the elastic is attached to the pant all the way around-it’s physically impossible to twist.

How do you measure how much elastic you need? Waist measurement minus...?
@SewSewLive28 күн бұрын
All elastics are so different! I like to stretch the elastic out a few times. Limber it up! Otherwise sometimes it will get longer. Then wrap it around myself, leave one inch for overlap. If you’re attaching it to thick or heavier fabric, you’ll need to cut it shorter since it’ll stay a bit stretched because of the heavy fabric. If it’s on the lighter side I wrap it around me to how I’d like it to feel. Giving myself 1” to overlap.

As a new sewer, I only use self or similar sew in interfacing, like in olden times. 1. don't want synthetic glues in my clothes, 2. when I have taken apart worn out RTW garments, the interfacing was congealed and balled up and made the interfaced pieces not re-usable.
