I've read somewhere . You can't edit parameters in the PATCH and save it. Like changing the sound of Italian accordion to sound like a Hohner. Can someone elaborate on it please?

2:30 I don't know what Roland would call it, but the Wavestation has real polyphony issues which can be worked around with what Korg calls the "Single Trig" setting. It allows only the latest version of any given note to sound, so if you restrike a note with the damper pedal down, you will NOT have multiple iterations of that note sucking up your polyphony. Does the Fantom have this feature?

It's actually not a lot of money compared to a Synclavier or Yamaha's top-end two-manual FM organ in the 80s ($60k-$250k). For prosumer-level synths back then, the affordable answer to polyphony problems was to buy a rack version of whatever you were playing and interlace its odd notes with your keyboard's even notes. Maybe Roland needs an affordable Fantom module--like the Fantom XR but with a durable display--and all these polyphony complaints can disappear. Or--duh! what was I thinking?--a VST Fantom that interlaces notes with your hardware Fantom. Polyphony problem solved!

This works so well because you have a camera trained on the screen. I've watched a number of videos and none of them show the screen so its readable. Nice work!

Hi darrick. Thanks for the very informative video. What dou think of the Roland piano sounds, compared with the Yamaha sounds?

I’m just wait for the Kronos to be release as part of the Korg Collection plugins… it’s pretty vintage by now. Just slap a MacMini M4 on a Akai MPC Keys 61, install all my soft and I won’t need to ever think about a “workstation keyboard” anymore. I can’t go back to medium quality sounds once you tasted the best of the best… my MacBook Pro Max has 64GB ram and 8TB ssd with 7TB of the best plugins and libraries on earth… no Kronos, Montage or Fantôme will ever match that, sorry… not sorry!

I have had my RD2000 about 3 years now. I love the user interface. Very easy to use. Sounds could be better, but work fine in a live setting. The Hammond Organ sounds are weak, but I added a Neo Vent II and routed the organ sounds to the sub output to isolate the Leslie effect for organ only. The Neo Vent made the organ sound come alive in the RD2000. Not sure I will upgrade to the RD2000 EX. It depends on how affects the organ expansion I already use in the RD2000...

No issue with polyphony. Just don't use a layer. Use separate tracks on GarageBand on a Mac for example!

Great Video, but shouldn't I add sounds to the combi by inserting the sounds with their built-in effects? The piano sounds different in program mode but when I add a piano to a combi it usually sounds different.

The polyphony issue is absolutely inexcusable for a flagship. Roland has been resting on decades-old technology for far too long. Not only is the BMC chip they’re using incredibly outdated, but they also haven’t developed any new tone generator engines. Instead, they keep recycling the same old tech, putting it into a new case, and calling it a flagship-it’s a real shame. I can even imagine that, in their effort to keep reusing the same old code across different architectures, they’ve ended up with a pile of inefficient, buggy code. This likely explains the poor polyphony capabilities and the frequent crashes.

Many thanks for the detailed review! One question regarding the polyphony issue - have you tried any of the ezx expansion pianos combined with other sounds and if yes, is there the same problem? Thanks!

I've just picked up a Kronos X in absolutely mint condition and had its SSD upgraded to 120gb as well as getting the latest 3.1.4 OS affectively turning it into a Kronos 2. The authorised Korg repairer was blown away at its pristine condition and said that I'll get years of great mileage out of it now that it's been serviced and upgraded. I'm looking forward to my Kronos journey owing to the fact that I've been lusting over one of them for well over a decade.

I had a Kronos för about a year but due to echonomical troubles I had to sell It😢 NOW when ecconomy is better Its REPLACED all fun things the 9 faders to use aa drabbar, the Vector joystick and the smart arpeggiator I loved playing with is now GONE in the new model SHAME Korg! I guess not all changes are for the better!

Great video Darrick! I'm looking for a keyboard that can play on its own with lots of sounds and instruments but also might want to compose music on my pc. I don't want to spend thousands of dollars. Is there any you recommend that is between $800 and $2000? Thanks!

Thank you Darrick! You saved me from possibly making a $1500 mistake. I love the features fo the Fantom but as a live performer. I have no use for any instrument with dropouts. I own new Medeli AKX10 with 256 note polyphony. It sounds great! You can layer sounds to the max. But it's not as user friendly as others. Not really ideal for live performance. Therefore, I've decide to purchase the Yamaha MODX6+. A seasoned Keyboardist in one of the bands that I perform with,owns a MODX6+. It's his favorite. He has tons of keyboards. And the Yam sounds great live. Thanks again! P.S. Do you know if the Akai MDX Key 61 also has 256 Stereo polyphony?

I think that you kind of answered this already when someone asked about using an 0 series with Ableton Live and if it will eliminate the polyphonic issue, is that true of other DAWs such as Logic? Please feel free to elaborate for people who are really not much of a keyboard player.

I don’t have an MPC, I was looking for a keyboard when I found out about MPC. I can’t play keys but I want to learn. So it’s clearly working. Haven’t bought anything yet, just looking.

I also know from your videos that you own the MPC key 61 and another workaround would be to use the autosampler to sample in some of the sounds and have the Roland phantom control them externally that would work for things like the pad sounds or things like thatand then like you said, using the other piano sound engine to get unlimited polyphony that would be a good hardware workaround for that
@calebpromusician98Ай бұрын
I wish there was some type of expansion card you could get for the polyphony issues on it, but then again it would have to contain all of the sound engines in the card and we all know how expensive that would be

Hi Derrick, if I connect my Fantom-O to my DAW (Ableton-Live), will the DAW’s polyphony over-ride the Fantom’s polyphony? Is that a solution to improve the Fantom-Os polyphony? 🙏 🎉

As a long time Roland RD user, I don’t like using MODX8. I find it difficult to edit my layers dynamically. Yes, MODX sounds are probably way better than the RD, but I will stick will RD due to the convenience of later editing.

Your story is excellent. It's almost my story backwards. I started off using a hardware sequencer then gravitated to a Korg X3 workstation which was my sequencer until I bought the MPC 2000. I used that for 8 years straight until I started in Reason which I used exclusively for 10 years. Then I added a MPC Touch (computer only version of the Live 1) which put me right back in the saddle with a new touchscreen. I used that in Reason with the MPC software until this summer when my new Mac wouldn't see it. Now I have the MPC One Plus and couldn't be happier. The two sound incredible together. Excellent video

Fantastic video! I put my hands on a MODX 8+ yesterday for the first time. It was surprisingly easy to navigate the menus and set up the functions. It could be because it is very similar to my 30-year-old Yamaha PSR-320 in the way it is set up.
@stevekirkby6570Ай бұрын
Yea, that's always been the case with Roland... partials. So they should explain this rather than just saying 256 poly... most folk would think 'wow' ... but when you say one sound can use x partials per note.... and that is your actual polyphony disappearing. LOL.

Does the Fantom 0 series have any TPU rubber coating on it? The kind that turns rubbery and sticky after awhile?
