Why tf are we speaking "English" and just cucking for the scandinavians, acting like English doesn't, and hasn't ever existed...? The English words are even more faithful to the proto-Germanic, and have taken a big role in reconstructing the proto-Germanic. Of the things you brought up: Woden, Tiw, Thunor, Ing - it's not hard. Modern English speakers are loathsome little things. Somethingsomething forefathers spin in their graves.

Unfortunately there's not an extensive list of resources for this time period. Caesar's work on the Gallic Wars is the earliest major source we have, but in truth he gives us next to nothing. Tacitus's work on Germania is the next best written source (which is mainly what this video referenced). Other than that, etymology and archaeology are about all we have for this topic. There's more historical info available for the Germanic deities during the Migration Period but that's a few hundred years after this setting

I am putting weight on the origin of these people, sages, if you like. A lot of council in the old testament were given by sages and prophets and it was the fall of the Egyptian empire. I think of gnostic as the hermetic gnostics, not as christian gnostic as such, although I am putting little weight on the translations as you find by translating religious writings they give a different invocation depending on the translation of language used. However my thought is Hermes credited in the old testament by the Jews and I feel that the gnostic were the Hermes that Councilled the Egyptian pharoes and assisted the islraelites. So I do feel the Hermes, or Hermetic gnostics lived and probably came from out of Egypt. Unfortunately I don't have a time machine but then I realise nobody else has one either. I'm also putting it out there that Hermes wasn't a single person.

Another excellent video! Thank you so much. It's interesting watching this video after watching the video on the Nag Hammadi where you point out that many Christian scholars dismissed the writings contained because they showed too much "pagan influence," while here we see what the Jews would call the pagan influences on Christianity. Namely that a lot of early Christian theology seems to be Greco-Roman polytheists reading the Hebrew scriptures through their own cultural lens. The Harrowing of Hell that you mentioned makes no sense from a Jewish perspective, but it makes a lot of sense from a Greco-Roman point of view where there are numerous stories where Heroic figures descend into the Underworld and confront its ruler and free the wrongfully imprisoned. I should also note that this isn't to cast too much shade on the early Christians for "paganizing" Judaism, it was a period of great change for the region as a whole and there were plenty of Helenizers within the Jewish territories and a rich variety of ideological evolutions had been occuring in the hundreds of years between the production of the Torah and the period of great political, ideological, and spiritual tumult that produced first Jesus and then the cross cultural Jesus movement.

Great video. I have to say, you suggest the emphasis on "secret knowledge" is a sort of pagan hangover, and I'm sure there's a good case to be made that linking the specific form of this belief in Gnosticism with other non-Christian faiths at the time, but I think there's a case to be made that "secret knowledge" is woven into the DNA of Christianity. After all, most Christians believe that Jesus was predicted in the Jewish scriptures and that the secret knowledge given from Jesus to the Christians "unlocked" this deeper level of understanding to the Jewish scriptures and to the world as a whole. And in an environment where a group of believers is having radically new ideas about G-d and his relationship with humanity (and with Himself vis a vis the evolution of trinitarianism) it shouldn't be surprising that such a movement might have some who continue digging for even deeper "hidden truths" From our perch in the distant future it's easy to forget how radical Christianity was for both the Jewish and non-Jewish perspectives of the time, with it's syncretism of Jewish and Greco-Roman beliefs. It really shouldn't be surprising that it continued to evolve in some quite radical ways until the Roman variety won out in Europe and the Rise of Islam decimated many non-European Christian traditions.

So, you've asked for criticism so, here's my piece. First of all, congrats on making videos talking about this almost forgotten subject. Gaulish deities are no joke. Now, it will never stop bothering me when people summurise "Gaul" as France... This went so far that french people are now certain they're "THE gauls". You did a nice job in various aspects of your video but I think that saying stuff like that continues the Gaul's myth in the collective mind. It robs so much other countries of their Gaulish heritage as I've witnessed here in Central Europe. Also, it makes it sooooo hard to recover history about gaulish culture since it's invisible. Swiss romance people doesn't consider themselves as Celtic even less Gaulish. Just imagine the waste of history... Also, the Rhine takes its source in Switzerland in the Grisons canton. The Grisons are in the eastern part of Switzerland far away from France and much more so from Paris. You're almost 700km wrong. Again, France isn't everything ;) I think it's so good to talk about those topics but researching a little more before spreading misinformation is also essential when you have the means to check facts so easily. Hope this can help the growth. Take care ✨️

Ill say this, I am french btw: we are absolutely Gauls (with the exception ofc of some minority groups which either aren’t in Gaulish territory -eg the Vascons- or which got there later -eg the Flemish), but we are not the only Gauls as some other Europeans also are. That being said, the Gauls mostly did originally come from what we would call France and other francophone areas like in Switzerland and Belgium. There are other Germanic areas too, but these are not all Gaulish in the modern day. In some places, like Alsace and parts of German Switzerland, the people are descended from Gauls assimilated into Germanic culture. In other places though, like Flanders and Eastern Germany, the people came from across the Rhine and dislocated and replaced Gauls that had been there. All of this is shown through dna evidence, as well as historical records. Other Gaulish territories like Padonia and Galatia are attested to have been conquered and settled by people coming from Gaul proper. So while they also have Gaulish roots it is still fair the say that modern France roughly corresponds to old Gallia. It’s also worth remembering that the word Gaul comes from the Frankish term for non-Germanics of the territory they had conquered (aka France), and that it is only through a later conflation of our foreign overlords with ourselves that we started being called French and associated the name Gaul with our ancestors instead (conflating it also with the old Latin word for us: Galli). Sorry this was a bit long, but there is no way to explain this well in a short text.

According to the opinion of some scholars, monarchy developed in ancient India during the Vedic period because the family system was patriarchal. According to the famous scholar Zimer, "The social system of the Aryans was patriarchal." Prayers have been made in Vedic mantras for the increase of royal power. At that time, Kshatra or Kshatrashi has been wished for victory in the wars. In this era, God Indra had special importance and he was pleased so that victory could be achieved in wars.

These gods, are principalities, and are more like spirits without a body. Think of hunger. Hunger can possess people and animals, for a time. It has it's own telos, it's own aim. Hunger itself cannot die. So it's like a god. There are a lot of gods before Christ came and everything changed. All these false gods were exorcised by God, by his Word, Jesus Christ.

Love your takes on history, and specifically religion/mythology (love your vid on the possible mistranslation of hell). @BaileyJPope2 жыл бұрын
Follow-up response after some research: Predictably, the trouble here lies with the concept of 'conversion' in antiquity. Paul uses the Greek term 'prosēlytoi' to describe those who voluntarily Judaize themselves in the NT. Literally, this means one that 'comes to' something (Judaism, in this case). Some scholars argue that Paul was merely asking the gentiles to receive certain Jewish ethics and customs--as well as to only worship the God of Israel--but NOT to fully convert to Judaism. They argue this because the concept of conversion as we understand it today cannot be applied to the first century, since having the same genealogical/ethnic background was a prerequisite. However, if you look at the Greek translation of Romans 9:3, it says: "For I wish that I were accursed were I cut off from Christ, for the sake of my brethren; my kinsmen--according to the flesh--who are Israelites. To them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises." The term kinsmen is worthy of note here, the Greek word is 'syngenōn' meaning "of the same offspring". Paul continues later in verse 8, "This means it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise who are counted as descendants.” Paul's interpretation of the events with Abraham and Isaac in Genesis is that the flesh (your genealogical descent) is subsidiary to the spirit in terms of God’s promise. Inherently, the traditional family tree between the Israelites and their God has been superseded. God's children are those who keep his promise, as is evident in the Torah (to Paul, at least). Really, the important thing here is to understand Paul and his cohort firmly believed that the Messiah would return within their lifetime. Their goal wasn't to convert anyone for the sake of conversion but to save the gentiles from God's wrath following the resurrection; and in Jewish tradition, the redemption of the gentiles was indeed possible by adhering to a set of preconditions (this is mentioned somewhere in Isaiah). In my eyes, it makes complete sense that an entirely new sect--Christianity--would develop out of this eschatological doctrine. It was quite literally intended, one could say. I thoroughly enjoyed this question honestly, might make a video on this topic here soon. Apologies for the length in any case!

Admittedly, I don't have extensive knowledge on Roman deities. But I do know Mars was the god of war in their pantheon, and I believe they had a separate deity for victory. His name always intrigued me linguistically. In Gaulish, words that began with ‘k’ or ‘c’ ended up as an ‘h’ in the Germanic languages, & ‘a’ vowels were raised to an ‘o’ eventually. Great video. Very informative and you explained well the PIE culture. Just one quick correction. The PIE terms for 'brother' and 'sister' were used only for true brothers and sisters and cousins of the same patrilineage of the same generation or close in age which would include the father's brothers' children (not father's sisters' children) but also the father's father's brothers' sons' children and other more distant relatives of the patrilineage. Terms for cousins through the father's sister or through the mother's brother or sister have not been reconstructed for PIE, largely because all of the descendant languages seem to have developed them after they split from PIE and different branches developed these terms distinctly.

White race sprung from Uralic-Altaic origins. Indo-Europeans were tan skinned immigrants from northern Hindustan toward southern Europe. Later the extensive cultural, militaristic, religious and economic influence of the southern brown skinned Europe's civilizations caused many white Germanic tribes to get assimilated. If you look at more obscure historical sources (like Olaus Magnus, and Richard Verstegan), Woden is 100% a war god. His names mean’s fury, he has warrior cults, and is compared to Mars. Also I’m not a believer in Tyr being the “chieftain of the gods”. The only evidence is etymology, and that’s not something so firm that you can rely on only it. I think there’s MUCH bigger evidence that Thor, if any god, was the “chieftain of the gods”. He’s a storm god that slays monsters and has a serpent rival, which is common in many Indo-Europeans faiths for the leader (Zeus, Indra, etc). Then there’s sources that say as much (Like Olaus Magnus & Richard Verstegen, neither of whom were influenced by the Odin-centric Eddas (they weren’t popular during the 16th and early 17th centuries)). Plus the numerous place names, and even in the Eddas Thor gets a massive chunk of screen time. If Othin usurped any deity, it was 100% Thor.

A cult that died out would leave the ancestors without someone to perform the rituals for them and eternal damnation. In the poem in the havamal that details his sacrifice of himself to himself on yggdrasil he uses the line "from what roots rises to [asgard]. None had refreshed me with food or drink. I peered right down in the deep. *Screaming I lifted the roots,* then I fell back from thence." it shows how he is often a man of said odr (pronounced oethr).
