This is a fantastic breakdown, and I love the casual style and examples! I feel like I've been working on a lot of these concepts with varying degrees of structure and intentionality, and this video helped shift my perspective for practicing them! Shoutouts to June for that great habit tip! That's an incredibly frustrating feeling and I want to add that I feel like I see it happen more the more emotionally involved/upset the player is (both from me and people I play). So not only something for me to look out for in lower level players, but also wondering if building the skill of breaking muscle memory could help me think clearer and calm down. Anyway, I've been a big fan of the educational content lately!

The sheik tech chasing is limited by her tech in place animation not her roll, right? If you want to grab (6f start up), you have: 6f + 15f (reaction time) + 5f (reactable frame) = 26f. I'm not sure if I counted everything correctly but either way it's very hard, and it's not because her tech roll becomes unreachable: 10f (boost grab) + 15f (reaction time) + 5f (reactable frame) = 30f.

Ie it wouldn't matter if Sheik is on a platform because the extra travel time isn't the issue
@Radarssbm
@Radarssbm 2 ай бұрын
First off, unfortunately yeah the way you’re calculating things isn’t right. You don’t add +5 (assuming frame 5 is the first reactable frames Instead in this case, the equation would be 26-4 (you didn’t react until frame 5 so those first 4 frames are wasted) which leaves you with 22. Then you subtract 7 for grab startup. 22-7 =15 frames. For reference, Fox tech in place is also 26 frames, so a 26 frame tech in place alone wouldn’t be an issue. The problem though is if you input the same info with a tech roll animation, which takes 40 frames, you also have to cover the long distance she travels. So if you realize she’s tech rolling on frame 5, yes you get an extra 14 frames from her 40 frame roll, but now you’d also have to cover that distance in 14 frames (which characters can’t do). In both of these cases, frame 5 as a reaction point also might be optimistic. I’m away on vacation right now but the reaction visual might be more like frame 7 But if that distance was much smaller, then suddenly that 14 frame travel time doesn’t exist! Or maybe it’s only like, 5 frames of travel time and there’s still a good amount of leeway. Basically what matters is the difference in distinguishing her tech in place from the roll. Typically the way you’d tech chase is you’d assume tech in place, then when that’s not happening you’d then cover the rolls. But if you follow that method against Sheik, you won’t be able to cover the travel time because of the initial frames that it takes you to distinguish which tech she is doing
@beansprugget2505
@beansprugget2505 2 ай бұрын
Might accidentally be double replying because somehow I do not see my earlier reply. You say Sheik is differentiable at frame 7 (there is no discontinuity), which I am to lazy to check. That makes the calculation: 26f - 6f, then -7f grab start up, = 13f. That's not reactable. I personally can react to Fox tech rolls fairly consistently, despite not practicing RTC, so I'm probably reacting on frame 20 or later (I can 3f jab TiP reliably but not 6f moves).

I really liked your section about slow reaction time at the end! Im somewhere around 18 frames and I've really found everything you said to be true, its slightly harder but so many situations are still well within my ability to react to. The game is still very fun and i think it's helped me improve at reading my opponent too

Just some quick notes: Throughout the video I say “greater than 15” but I meant equal or greater to 15 frames - in the peach example it’s possible she can react to fox tech away, didn’t have time to test it. But she can’t react to Falco as far as I’m aware and in general is not a reaction based character in many situations - as others have mentioned I forgot to calculate the input lag melee has. Depending who you ask this is around 3-4 frames - let me know if you guys have any questions!
@JJayson
@JJayson 2 ай бұрын
Something very important missing from your 15 frame calculation is Melee's natural input lag. Every game has some amount of input lag, from Street Fighter 5's notorious 8 frames, to Melee's much more reasonable 4 frames (it actually fluctuates around 3.6-5.0 due to polling drift, but 4 is a decent estimate). This is why you will generally have better reaction times on something like Human Benchmark than in the Uncle Punch reaction tester. This means that 19 frames would be a much better target to determine if something is reactable. It also means that your window for reacting to something will be universally shifted depending on what game you're playing. For example, you can react to more options in Melee compared to Ultimate due to the lower input lag. I don't know if anyone has yet researched Rivals 2's input lag.
@Radarssbm
@Radarssbm 2 ай бұрын
This isn’t really true. Melee has some input lag but in the context of this example we are accounting for that. If you test in uncle punch, which has the same input lag melee always does, I’m able to consistently hit 14-15. I agree that the rivals input lag might need more analysis but it is not as simple as just assuming 19 frames instead at all. The other evidence of this is that there are people who are able to react to things that are well under a 15 frame window. If the delay was truly 19 frames, people hitting like 12-13 frame reaction times wouldn’t be so common among pros
@JJayson
@JJayson 2 ай бұрын
I definitely agree that people can hit sub 19f reactions, because most people have a reaction time well under 250ms. The average gamer is probably closer to 200ms, and people like Moky have done tests on stream and hit ~170ms. I just want to clarify that if your reaction time is 250ms, you won't be able to react to 15f, at least in Melee.

Yeah honestly I have a huge problem with my Marth in that I try so hard for going for true combos against floaties like against Samus for example that I get myself reversaled when it's important to learn the spots to just reset to neutral to not overextend and also to take the easy route and just take the superior positioning a lot of the time rather than trying to be so precise with my followups lol

@Radarssbm

Basically comes with experience. Over time you know what happens in a given situation because you've seen it so many times. For example, when Fox up-throws a Puff, she just knows up-air is the next step, so they use survival DI to try to survive the hit. High level DI/SDI is just "they're probably gonna do this" taken to an extreme level!
